About the property

Huge 4 bed house, ideal for families (sleeps 8) + cottage (sleeps4-6) if wanted.

Home from home, this stunningly located mountain farmhouse 20 min from the beach. Offers spacious accommodation, a beautiful free-form pool and plenty of places to relax in the shade or sun. Casa Pio can be rented together with The Little House, (see property no, 1201975) If, what you are looking for is a taste of real Catalan life, reading a book by the pool, gazing at the glorious mountain views, BBQ in the lovely outside kitchen or snoozing on the daybed in the shade then look no further. You can even have a massage or pop up the road each day for a yoga session in the early morning sun.

Your host this year are Paul and Alex, who live nearby. Pool cleaning and all other duties will be organised by them and last year's vistor book comments give us total confidence that they will care for you as well as we could.

We have installed full oil-fired central heating for your comfort in the two cold months of the year - January and February.

BEACHES AND OTHER THINGS TO DO:

The area of coastline near to the house is a stretch of coast that has been happily missed by mass tourism. There are many small beaches and coves and it is easy to find quieter ones even in the height of summer. The area around the Ebro valley played an important role in the civil war and there are many castles, ruined villages and museums around the area that testify to its past.

If you really feel like doing something fun and for all the family there is always Port Aventura and the waterpark Costa Caribe (Universal Studios theme Park) which is only a 40 minute drive away.

This is the most interesting area and there is so much to do (or not). Walks are on your doorstep, natural parks with gorges and waterfalls and so much more.

MORE LOCAL INFORMATION:

The local village of Rasquera is a small agricultural village where it often feels that time has stood still. Old men chat under the trees in the square and horses and carts are still used. It does however have a small range of shops and would provide all you needed if you didn't want to venture out of this lovely valley.

El Perello, at the other end of the valley is a little more lively and has internet cafes and a good market on a Saturday.

MY ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE TIME OF YEAR:

It is such a shame that so many people think of Spain as a summer destination only as other times of year can offer so much more.....May and June are fantastic, no so hot , greener and of course less busy. September is also a lovely month, still plenty of sunshine usually 9 although it can rain bringing, what the locals refer to as, the second spring. Casa Pio makes a perfect base for say 3 couples to explore the area and works out an absolute bargain if shared between 3 lots of friends!!

As with the rest of Spain the Catalans love their festivals and Rasqueras fiesta major is during the first week of august when the village goes into party mode and firework wielding devils chase children through the streets and a wild time is had by old and young alike. However, if you miss this then you are never very far from some sort of fiesta, whether it is underwater fireworks on the beach or cava flowing from the village fountain. More information will be given on request.

If you hadn't noticed my reference before then I would like to remind you that there is a cottage- Casita Pio (the Little House Property ref:1201975)- attached to the main house (Casa Pio), . This has 2 bedrooms and its own private space, and can be rented together or separately, so perfect for that extended family holiday.

.Please can you note that Casa Pio and the Little House are 'off grid'. This means that you can feel good about not using too much of the earth's resources as all our electricity comes from the solar panels and the wind turbine. This will in no way inconvenience you as although hairdryers, hair straighteners and other things with a heating element are discouraged they can still be used at certain times of the day.

There is also free wifi.

We are Sue and David Barnes and we live near Windsor, UK. Like the couple we bought Casa Pio from, we fell in love with the beautiful and unique house at first sight.

Very much a large family home, in a really gorgeous part of the Catalan countryside, we instantly relaxed and knew that this was where we wanted to be, as often as our too busy lives would allow.

Our family is pretty large and, with five children and five grand-children, the house has been enjoyed by three generations, all finding different things that they love about the place.

The house seems to embrace large, happy gatherings and, with so much space (there is 18 acres of garden!), we have always found that there are still so many quiet spaces to just curl up and read a book, even when the house is full.

We love the magnificence of the nearby River Ebre just as much as the mountain scenery. On a really hot day, the lovely unspoilt Mediterranean beaches nearby, offer a welcome respite and we are spoilt for choice. It is always so hard, however, to drag ourselves away from the huge pool and nothing is nicer that reading a good book and drinking in the magnificent views.

Our work is hectic as we run our own business and we value enormously stepping off the treadmill and totally relaxing at Casa Pio - nowhere in the world we have ever visited comes anywhere near.

Why Sue Barnes chose Rasquera

We literally put a pin in the map and came here to search for a get away from it all property. Not too far south as we both like the seasons, near to Reus airport (only 35 minutes away and an easy journey). Near to the mountains, the sea and the river.

We loved the area as it was very Spanish, the village of Rasquera is still what one imagines, horses and carts, old men snoozing in the shade. The coast is unspoilt and it's still possible to find small empty coves with not a soul on.

The proximity to the River Ebro was also very alluring and its majestic beauty and the sight of such huge fish, literally on the surface, makes this a very special place to visit. The ferry trip over to Miravet is a real experience, as is the castle perched precariously on the side of the cliff.

Most of all though we just fell in love with the house and 'that view' and the relaxed and very Spanish way of life we instantly fall into whenever we are here.

Local food and wine is exemplary and there are many restaurants to suit all tastes. The local seaside towns with their influx of summer visitors are lively and enjoyable for a family evening out after a hard day doing nothing!

Of course, you can exert yourself with fabulous country walks and cycle trails from our doorstep and we have enjoyed climbing some of the hills but still have many to conquer.

This simply is a very lovely place to stay - look at the photographs and come and see for yourselves.

We stayed here for the second time in a large family group. A beautiful tranquil place, far away from the noise of the town, surrounded by fig and almond trees. The swimming pool with its backdrop of mountains is a great place to cool off in the heat of the day and the many shady areas provide ideal places to relax with a book. The children spent most of their time in the pool or devising treasure hunts among the trees.

The surrounding area has much to offer. Miravet with its castle and the tiny car ferry across the river is a must, as is the pottery where you can watch the potter at work and buy interesting souvenirs to take home. There are beautiful sandy beaches a short drive away

We were sad to say goodbye to Casa Pio and thoroughly recommend it for a holiday to remember.

  • There are 4 bathrooms (two are en suite). Two have baths with mountain views. There is a constant supply of hot water from gas water heaters. They both have tiled floors and plain white bathroom suites. One of the bathrooms has a large walk in shower and is in the downstairs utility room, where there is a washing machine, loo and Belfast sink.

  • Off a huge double height landing are 4 lovely bedrooms and a bathroom, all with oak floorboards. The main bedroom is huge and light filled and has fantastic mountain and pool views. You wont want to, and why should you, get out of the superking size French wooden bed! There are French windows out onto a huge balcony. It has an en suite bathroom with, bath, shower, loo, bidet, hand basin and of course more stunning views over the courtyard and mountains beyond. The 3rd bedroom has an old brass and iron bed and a romantic wrought iron balcony with French doors. Bedroom 2 has a new bed, double aspect windows and is also en suite. There are large ceiling fans in two of the double bedrooms as well as plenty of windows to allow cooling breezes at night. This really is a very comfortable family home with more space than you can dream of!!

Notes:
This is a real home and therefore has many comforts and facilities that may not be found in other holiday homes. It is a large and spacious house with plenty of places to relax and get away. The outside kitchen is a fantastic space for cooking and eating al fresco and also has the thoughtful addition of removable mosquito nets/doors for your additional comfort. The free form swimming pool really is lovely and has fantastic views, wooden decking and even a rock to jump off! It must be noted that this house is 'off grid' and all its electricity is generated by solar and wind power (and a back up genny for those rare grey days). The only electrical devices that are not allowed are those with a heating element... so sorry no hair dryers, straighteners, electric kettles or irons.

peace and tranquility with fabulous views

We had a wonderful week here, basking in glorious sunshine, swimming in the pool while surrounded by incredible mountain scenery. The house has every comfort and is furnished to a very high standard. There is a market in the nearby town and stunning sandy beaches which are uncrowded and clean. Pleny of places to visit including a working pottery selling beautiful items at very reasonable prices. We had a very relaxing holiday away from the hassle of everyday life and would thoroughly recommend Casa Pio to anyone wanting a true taste of rural Spain.

Here you have it all mountains, river and sea.

Golf: There are quite a few golf courses around, the nearest about half an hour drive away.
