Kapoho, about 25 miles from Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii, is known for some of the finest and safest snorkeling in the Islands. Kapoho Bay Tidepools are protected from the ocean's waves by a coral reef; the water is crystal clear, and often warmer than the ocean because of geothermally heated springs that enter into the tidepools in various places. Kapoho is a small gated community in East Side of Big Island of Hawaii. Area attractions include, swimming, scuba diving, spelunking, a public swimming pool in Pahoa, fishing, restaurants, reefs, surfing, snorkeling, and a beautiful beach. Here in Kapoho Big Island of Hawaii, the sunniest spot on the quiet side of the Big Island of Hawaii, is where you can still be in touch with a bit of old Hawaii, untouched by city life. Kapoho Bay is a small quiet gated community. The many varieties of tropical fish which also flourish in the ponds make them a beautiful snorkeling location. Our Kapoho Vacation Rentals accommodations are close to some of the best swimming, snorkeling and hiking on the island. Enjoy the magic of snorkeling with gentle sea turtles in Champagne Pond. For a day trip, head to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Take a peek at an explosion captured on film in the Kilauea Visitor's Center. Head down the Chain of Craters Road and look for flowing lava. And explore the Thurston Lava Tube, the fern forests, and the other natural phenomena of the area - about a one hour drive. Lava Tree State Park, restaurants and super markets in Pahoa Town 15 min Drive from the Home. Area attractions include, swimming, scuba diving, spelunking, fishing, restaurants, reefs, surfing, snorkeling. National Volcanoes Park is about 1 hour away. Akaka Falls 1 Hour min Drive. Lava Flow watching 30 min. Tide Pools and Best Coral viewing by snorkeling 5 min Drive in Vacationland.

Reviewer Comments:

The snorkeling and location of the house is great. The house itself is pretty nice but could use some maintenance. I could tell they had done some upgrades which were nice. Small stuff like sticking patio doors just detracted from an otherwise great experience.

Interesting spot with great WARM ponds for swimming in right from our own yard. Had some heavy rain but accommodation good and swimming great. House could use some better Kitchen supplies. They were short of soap, utensils were a little tired. However overall it was great.

Reviewer Comments:

Beautiful clean, well equipped home. Amazing location with its own tropical salt water pond. The kids ages 4 to 12 and us parents swam every day! Never a need to leave. Backed up against the Ocean and warm ponds. What a gem. The only downfall was the 7am construction, otherwise it was fantastic. We have already recommended it to friends and family.

Can't beat the view and private pond

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here for 6 nights and had a wonderful time. There were 7 of us (6 adults and 1 child). The patio you see in the photo was our prime hang our area, and why not, it's got the view of the ponds and the ocean!!

The private (shared with neighbors but not public) pond was so amazing. It was great for all of us especially my 5 year old and his grandmother who has a bum knee. Very easy to get in and out of. The pond is well stocked with at least 20 different kinds of fish we counted, and an eel. You'll find the water to be "oily/cloudy" but this is because of the fresh water springs (cold) and the warm salt water mixing together. The further you get out, the less "oily" it gets. The local Champagne Pond is accessible from the back yard, but my dad & brother went in it and said it wasn't as good as our pond, so I didn't waste my time.

The living space layout is good, the back room is very nice and private. The front middle room has windows that open into the living room for air circulation, but then there's no privacy or way to block out the sound. We slept in there with our 5 year old which worked out fine since he was up the earliest he didn't wake anyone else up. The 3rd room was good but a bit small, but had a double bed. The game room was fun, for the 5year old, another place to play, but we didn't use it much.

Plenty of towels, swimming equipment to borrow . The kitchen is pretty well stocked with that you need. We didn't have enough bowls, but lots of pots, pans, utensils, rice cooker, toaster, coffee maker.

The access to the place (because it's a private road) was little funky at first, but you get used to using the gate pass and openers and then you are totally used to it.

This place is super close to the Wai Opae Marine Life Conservation District tide pools, only 5 minutes away, so we went 3x. It's about 10-12 minutes from the Lava Tree Forrest.

We'll miss watching the sunrise and sunset from that patio!!
