Hilary’s Cottage is a detached Victorian cottage situated in the village of Swaffham Prior. It is only four miles from Newmarket, the horse racing headquarters of Britain and only nine miles from the historic city of Cambridge.
The kitchen has a fridge/freezer, microwave and a cooker. There is 1 en-suite bathroom and one communal, both have baths with shower attachments. There is a living room with free wifi, a basic Sky Television package and a large leather sofa. To the rear of the cottage there is a small secluded garden with furniture for outdoor seating.

There is a nice pub that serves food – The Red Lion. There are many historic houses in the village and is known locally for having two churches in one church yard.

The cottage is in a charming village, with parking for one car, or two small ones. When we arrived the heating wasn't working, but thanks to Brian's efforts in bringing fuel for the fire, we were warm. The heating was repaired the next morning, and then worked very efficiently. The cottage was well-equipped, and the beds were comfortable. We appreciated having a downstairs bedroom and bathroom.
There were plenty of places to visit within easy distance, and lots of nearby walks for the dog. The village has a good pub, the Red Lion, which has just opened for food, and we had a delicious meal there.
The only downside was the dirtiness of the cottage. Superficially it appeared clean, but the kitchen floor underneath and behind the movable furniture was filthy, and there was black mold on the upstairs bathroom window. The downstairs bathroom bin had not been emptied, and contained the previous tenants' rubbish. When cleaning out the fire, I had difficulty in removing the ash pan because it was so full, and clearly had not been emptied for a long while.
Unusually we were instructed not to strip the beds on leaving, and made us wonder why. There was no visitors' book for comments.
The price was very reasonable, and Hilary was helpful in meeting our holiday dates. If the cottage was thoroughly cleaned and redecorated, it would be delightful.
A beautiful cottage from the outside and warm inside. It is ideally situated for the Cambridge park and ride. However we did feel that it needed some TLC. The carpets didn't appear to have been hoovered and there was litter under the beds, including a tablet box, fortunately empty. We were also concerned that if there had been six adults staying, only four people could sit in an easy chair.
We noted that the comments we have made had been made in the past by other visitors but it appears to have been to no avail.
This could be a most delightful holiday let with a little more attention given to detail.
The cottage is delightful and we were very surprised when we entered. The rooms were bigger especially the kitchen compared to what we saw from the photos. The village is very pleasant and has a nice and friendly pub.
The kitchen is well equiped, with a lot of kitchenware, and in each bedroom and bathrooms there are towels so you will not go short.
However, there is a need for refreshing each room, especially the downstairs bathroom which is very dated, the bath panel is broken and is held by tape, the light above the sink does not work which makes the room very dim. The front bedroom where we slept smells due i assume to the lack of ventilation.
When we vacuumed, you could tell that dogs had been there and the odour was rather unpleasant as the downstairs is all carpeted.
I will also mention that some cups, spoons etc were not cleaned properly and this is the responsability of the previous tenants to ensure that everything is sparkling clean but it also needs to be checked by the owners.
We, however had a good weekend but unfortunately will not go back there and it is a shame.
well equipped cottage in delightful village of Swaffham Prior, ideally placed for visits to Cambridge and Ely. Very quiet, ample parking, lovely ornaments, nice period house, Every need catered for, clean and tidy, will stay again when next in the area.
My family and I have been staying at Hilary's Cottage for a number of years and always experienced an excellent stay, with it feeling like the home away from home therefore we are shocked at the bad review which is why I have decided to write an opposing one. The trouble with reviews is that all the guests that have stayed over the years who have been pleased and satisfied don't usually bother to write them. You can tell Hilary's Cottage is the owners life times work and are very passionate about this and looking after their guests. What people seem to forget is that they are inspected by the tourist inspector every year and are part of the Visit England Scheme and so it can't be as bad as the review states.
This cottage could beautiful but it was disgusting everywhere needs a good clean. Mould was very bad in the downstairs bathroom, I had to wash the shower curtain. Bedding was very old and stained, the towels were all old some had holes in. Fridge had spilt milk in which had been there so long I could not clean it off. The furniture and carpets need replacing. We stay in rental properties a lot but this was the the worst and would not recommend at all.
10 miles from the City which is Cambridge. 5 miles from Newmarket. These can meet your entertainment and leisure needs.
