About the property

3+ bedrooms, 1 bath, sleeps 11

This A-frame cottage was completely rebuilt in '04. Its multi-level decks and panoramic windows have spectacular views of Trout Lake and the evening sunsets. The deck is nestled into the rock and is surrounded by pines, giving a sense of being a part of nature. On the deck's first level is a new, large barbecue grill, table and seating; on the second level is a cedar, wood-fired hot tub and more seating; and the third level provides additional seating as well as serves as an entrance to the ground level sleeping porch and stairs to the dock. A deck off the living room and a balcony off the master bedroom offer more views and seating. In living room is a floor to cathedral ceiling stone fireplace and TV w/ over 150 satellite channels. There is a swimming area on the shore, as well as off the dock. A new (2013) 17' pontoon boat w/ 8 hp motor (12' x 7' deck with 4 chairs and 1 bench, collapsible cover), 3 kayaks, stand-up paddle board are provided.

Indoors, the floor to cathedral ceiling fireplace, as well as the spacious picture windows and French doors make the living room a haven of views and comfort. One of the leather sofas opens into a full size bed. Off the living room is the dining room and kitchen. The kitchen has all new cabinets, appliances, Corian countertop, and is fully equipped. Also on the main floor is a bedroom w/ a queen bed across the hall from the full bathroom, which has all new fixtures as well as a stackable washer and dryer. On the second floor is the master bedroom, with queen bed, single bed and private balcony. On the ground level, near the water's edge, is a sleeping porch, with wrap-around screens, and has 2 queen beds--access to the sleeping porch is off the deck. In addition to the fireplace, the cottage has built in propane heaters.

Trout Lake lies in the midst of many recreational opportunities--golf, biking, hiking, spelunking, river kayaking/canoeing, fishing, hunting and unlimited ways for the family to explore the out-of-doors.

Beautiful Memorial Weekend!!!!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved the house. It had everything we needed for our long weekend on the lake. The deck was beautiful to hang out on, we even had the games going on it all weekend. We had a problem with the boat but I immediately contacted the owner and someone was there to give us another boat the very next morning. The only few things I would mention that is good to be aware of, the one screened in bedroom that is off the deck is literally that, all screens, no glass windows so it can get very chilly and damp in there. The beds provided in that room though are very nice and comfortable. The other piece of information that is important to know ahead of time, unless you have 4 wheel drive you may want to park on top of the hill and bring ur stuff down. The day we left it was raining and it took us 2 hours to finally get the car up the driveway. Other than that it was a great weekend and Donna Clark is a delight to work with. I would absolutely rent from them again!!! Oh.... and I thought it was wonderful to walk in and see a complimentary bottle of wine waiting for us on the table, very nice touch!!!!

Annual Hiking trip

  • 3 of 5

The trip did not help with the horrible weather we had when were up there for our annual hiking trip, it rained all three days, we had a couple of breaks in between but that was it. The cabin is nice but it was too small for our group of 8, the owner is very helpful, however with 8 guys in the cabin most of the day did not go well with one bathroom. We even decided to take the boat out in the rain but it moved too slow, a mechanic of ours even changed the spark plugs and put in the right gas and oil mixture, nothing, it just moves slow, but it was raining very hard so we gave that up too. It did not rain that much at night so we tried to stay near the firepit as much as possible. There is so much TV you can watch. The cabin had a sleeping quarter on the ground floor, however, it did not have windows, just a green cover over the windows, but cold air was coming, there was a small heater but it did not help, good thing a couple of our guys brought sleeping bags so they were able to sleep in the quarter. Seems like the trip was not meant to be, a couple of our guys tried kayaking and it flips over wet so both guys were already wet from rain was totally soaked from the cold lake water, pretty funny actually, so they give up on that too. We are used to being outside all day, then come back and relax in a cabin, but us being stuck in the cabin most of the time with a small bathroom did not help. The shower is cruise size shower, 6 guys could not move inside of it and the shower head had low water pressure, again our mechanic cleaned the head and it was doable. We are rebooking at another location in October hopefully with multiple bathrooms. This is the first time we see a place that can sleep 11 that had only 1 bathroom. I believe for a group of 4 people or 5 would be more comfortable. How was the weather heading home? It was snowing and hailing, unbelievable.

Owner's Response: Kha, I was truly saddened to read about your disappointment in your stay at Sunset Cottage. My husband John and I know how important getaway times are so we try to do everything possible to give our guests a good experience. As you said, the weather did not help, but still, we will take each of your comments to heart and change what we can. As to the boat, we had just picked it up from the marina where we had it stored, winterized and then tuned for this season's usage. Among other things, they had changed the spark plugs; our maintenance man had checked it out when it was put in the lake and had put the correct gas/oil mix in the tank. We would have sent him out immediately if we had known that you were having problems during your stay. It is our policy that if we cannot fix an engine problem on the spot, we always replace the engine with a spare. Even with that said, John and I do not want our guests to be unsatisfied, so please accept our sincere apologies. Donna

Perfect Summer Outdoor Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our week stay at Sunset Cottage was wonderful! John greeted us right away when we arrived and provided us with helpful tips on fishing and biking. The cottage was well equipped with items for kitchen needs. The grill was perfect for grilling out each night. The multiple decks were great to view the beautiful sunsets and enjoy the weather. Red lounge chairs on the top deck were extremely comfortable. The pontoon boat was wonderful to fish from and use to explore the lake. The kayaks and paddle board were in great condition and perfect for exploring the lake. We loved that the cottage is pet friendly. Our two labs had the best time being able to go on the boat and enjoy the lake. The steps into the water made it easy to get in and out of the lake. The nearby wooded area is perfect for hiking (Cedar Lake) and walking a pet. We enjoyed the hot tub at night under the stars. Anne and Derrick

Relaxing and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We just got back after a week at Sunset cottage. The lake was absolutely breathtaking and the view from the cottage was amazing. The cottage was just as appeared in photos. I was worried by some reviews as far as the kitchen and bathroom were concerned, especially since there were no pictures to view, but the kitchen was spacious. The fridge was full sized and fit all the food we brought (and it was a lot for 6-7 people). There wasn't a lot of cupboard space but we made due. The shower was small but if my 6ft 5 son in law could use it anyone can. Overall the home was comfortable and we enjoyed every moment there. The only disappointment was that we didn't catch any fish. We used the boat and kayaks every day as well as had bon fires nightly.

It was a great relaxing vacation.

(The drive way was steep but we did get down and back up several times, so don't be be afraid to use it)

Location

Trout Lake is surrounded by 1600 acres of State forest, where there are state-marked hiking trails. Nearby Cedar Lake and Wolf Lake offer additional trails and fishing opportunities. Trout Lake is annually stocked by NYS Department of Conservation with rainbow and lake trout, large and small mouth bass; perch and rock bass are native and in ample supply for the kids. Directly to the east is the high peaks region of the Adirondack (Lake Placid, the home of 2 Olympics, provides a great day trip-about 90 min); to the south along the St Lawrence River is the famous Thousand Islands Region, where one can enjoy boat cruises, castle sight seeing, boat museums (60 minutes away); to the north and across the Ogdensburg International Bridge awaits Canada's capital city, Ottawa, a city known for its continental flavor, fine dining, museums, tours of the Parliament building, and gardens--a unique excursion (90 min away).
