The stables can accommodate all levels of riding experience and horse back is a relaxing way to see the local countryside.
Our parents bought Villa Azeitona to enjoy during their holidays. My sister and two brothers now own the property and we all have many fond memories of the Quinta, the Algarve and all the good times we have had. We spend time there all through the year; Portugal consistently has the driest and warmest European winter weather and the wood stove gives a very cosy feel in winter. The area has changed over three decades but it is still a friendly, safe and reasonably priced area to get away and relax.
Mrs Gillian Sampson purchased this villa in 1982
Our parents were recommended by friends to visit the Quinta in the mid-seventies when they first came to Portugal. This was when tourism was first starting and the infrastructure was very simple. Then, as now, the Portuguese people are very friendly and hospitable and the way of life is very relaxed but with a hint of exotic from the Moorish architecture.
The space of the Quinta makes it peaceful and safe for children and being so longed established with beautiful grounds gives it a traditional quality which none of the newer properties on the Algarve come close to.
The staff are also very special, many having worked here most of their lives and are always delighted to see you return.
Our parents recognized these qualities in the Quinta, that is why they bought their holiday home here over 30 years ago.
Villa Azeitona has uninterrupted countryside and sea views with marvellous sunsets It has easy access to the beach and many other facilities but is quiet and homely. There are good facilities on the site which is very spacious with beautiful mature gardens. The shared pools mean that you can meet other holiday makers if you want to or avoid them if you do not. It is also a great way for children to make new friends. The long serving staff are dedicated to the Quinta and make it feel like home.
This was our second vist at the Quanta and we hope we will have many more. The villa was spotless and had everything you would need. There was a maid service twice a week which was a great treat. There are two pools both which are kept spotless. There is a pool side restaurent as well as a bar/ restaurant that is open on the evening. There is lots to do around the area but as we only had a week we were very relucant to go any where., Highly recommend the Quanta as a perfect holiday location. The Walsh Family
We had a great stay at the Quinta de Saudade. The Villa 11A was very clean (the maid comes 3x/week) and situated in a quiet area. The view from the terrace was just amazing. Also WiFi was available in the villa. The kitchen was fully equipped: microwave, oven, freezer, enough towels and plenty tableware and glasses (so you do not have to wash after every meal). The welcome package was simply fantastic: It included bread, butter, cheese, jam, tomatoes, water, orange juice, tea, coffee and even one bottle of wine. The pool area was also clean and our kids loved the playground next to the pool. For our next stay in the Algarve we will definitely book this villa again.
The Quinta da Saudade is only 35 mins from Faro airport but a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of some of the other resorts. The villa is on a small estate, managed on behalf of private owners and all the villas are unique. 11a is traditional in style but has all the mod cons of TV, air conditioning and wifi. The villa holds 4 adults comfortably with an additional cot/ small fold out bed for a child if necessary. It was fully equipped with everything we needed to self cater although there are many restaurants nearby to choose from (tip: take care when choosing fish at a restaurant priced per kg - it is often very expensive, especially at the beach). The fish and vegetable market in Armacao de Pera -about 10 mins drive - has brilliant fish at cheap prices, if you prefer to cook or barbecue at the villa.
The property was clean and a maid service cam 3 times a week to clean.
The pools were gorgeous and private and never seemed too busy. The pool bar wasn't open when we went but opens around half term I think.
Beaches - Gale - 5 mins drive - with beach bars and restaurants.
Porches - 15 mins - idyllic beaches - beware some step climbs down but worth the effort.
Alberfeira - 10 mins - busy, floating pontoon in summer..
Armacao de Pera - 10 mins - flat, safe beaches -great for young children.
You need a car to enjoy this experience and get out and about to see the area but if you like doing nothing but lying by the pools and enjoying the peace and quiet, taxis are an option.
We had a lovely stay and will certainly be back.
We have visited this villa 5 times and will return again in September 2014. The villa is furnished in traditional style with air conditioning in the rooms and a very well-equipped kitchen. The Quinta Da Saudade is a wonderful location with cobbled pathways and many different styles of accommodation, picturesque and true to the Algarve style. There are excellent walks, beaches and restaurants close by - if you can drag yourself away from the fantastic ambience of the villa and the prospect of a BBQ on the beautiful terrace looking out over the countryside to the sea. The swimming pools and tennis court are great and horse riding is outstanding. We would definitely recommend this villa to anyone who enjoys peace, sunshine and the finer things in life.
The Quinta da Saudade is a small, privately owned development occupying some 24 acres, about 6Km west of Albufeira and only 40 minutes drive from Faro airport. 29 villas and apartments enjoy a peaceful setting on an old hillside farm estate amongst mature orange, almond and olive trees. The villas have wonderful views across to the sea which is less than 2Km away. The wetlands and farmland are a walkers and bird watchers paradise including a flock of flamingos.
The nearest beach is a magnificent long stretch of sand, bounded by dunes where it is always possible to escape the crowds, even in August. Further along you can find pretty sandy coves hidden amongst stunning Algarve rocks and cliffs with clear rock pools to explore.
The local beaches are some of the best in Europe. Castelo, Gale, Armacao and Salgados are all between 5 and ten minutes drive away. They all have a choice of beach bars and restaurants.
The West Coast of Portugal is about an hours drive away where there are excellent surfing facilities. Salgados Golf Club and driving range are only a few minutes drive away and there are many other excellent golf courses in the area. The Quinta has on site stables which ideal for horse rides around the wetlands to the beach. Hard hats are provided. If you fancy wind surfing, the estuary at Portimao is a safe area with a choice of schools. At the Quinta there is a good quality tennis court with equipment on hire from the office.
For children of all ages the Zoo Marine is always very entertaining with dolphin, seal and bird performances, fun rides and other activities. The Algarve sun means that water parks are always a success and there is a choice for all ages between 10 and 20 minutes away. At the Quinta there are two swimming pools, the larger one has a separate shallow end for youngsters. There is also a self contained play ground, table tennis, boules and crazy golf.
MARKETS AND SHOPS
Most towns and villages hold a market at least once a week. Our favourites are Albufeira, Armacao de Pera and Loule. All full of local produce and lots of local characters who rally bring the Alarve alive. For more day to day shopping there is a choice of good quality supermarkets and ten minutes away the Algarve shopping centre. A tasty local bakers called Doca Boca produces Portuguese breads and cakes including Orange Cake. we often drop in for breakfast. Just up the road is a butcher who speaks good English to discuss the best meats to barbeque.
PLACES TO VISIT
The Algarve is not rich in historical monuments due to an earthquake about two centuries ago. However there are many characterful villages along the coast and inland. You will probably fly into Faro but its town centre and the salt flats are worth a visit and while you are going East the town of Tavira is also pretty.
Albufeira has lost its original charm but is good for night life and the new marina has restored some of the lost character to the town. Other marinas for boat lovers are at Vilamoura and Lagos. There are fishing boats at most villages along the coast.
Armacao de Pera, Carveiro and Salema are all seaside villages that are worth a visit. Inland, Sagres with its castle and tales of Scndinavian Princesses are on the way to the spa town of Caldas de Monchique in the Serra de Monchique hills. The commercial centre of Portimao has a vibrant sea front and a good shopping centre for leather goods.
Only an hour to the west is the South West tip of Europe, Cape St Vincent. Visit the Pousada hotel for lunch and the port at Sagres where wooden fishing boats are still built. But most impressive of all is the fortified school of Henry The Navigator on the very tip of Europe from where he trained the crews of Portuguese Caravelles to sail the oceans of the world in the 15th Century.
There is a wide choice of restaurants from snack bars on the beach, traditional Churrasqueiras where the locals eat chicken Piri-Piri and many other high quality, family friendly spots to discover. Ask Alice and Fernando in the Quinta office for their recommendations!
