This apartment is simple, tasty and rich in attributes. We call it the Fearless Frango.
On the second floor of small building (well over a century old) in the colourful, comfortable, chaotic, central Alfama district of Lisbon; a full renovation and modernisation of the apartment was completed in December 2013.
What’s on the menu of this establishment then?
2 bedrooms: the main bedroom is located at the back of the building and has a double glazed window. This means peace and a restful night’s sleep whilst still being able to step into the thick of the cool/earthy/traditional/reinvented/energetic/yet relaxed landscape as you exit the green street door downstairs. Whisper quiet airconditioning allows more control over the thermal and sonic environment. The bed is a double one and there’s a wardrobe too.
The second bedroom is a compact inner room. It has indirect light as well as ventilation from a high-mounted sliding window. It also has its own dedicated climate control unit. There is a “step-in” type closet which has a lot of storage space and can double as a little dressing room. Equipped with a full sized double bed - it is private and fully functional as a second bedroom. We painted it in a rich mossy green on the outside to create the impression that the room was a kind of cube within the greater apartment volume: hope you notice it.
The lounge is made by the high shuttered double doors that open onto the thin stone “Pombalesque” balcony. Not big enough to put a chair on but ok to stand at the railing, vinho verde in hand looking regally down on the people current on Rua dos Remédios below. Plenty of light and air can make its way inside. The doors are double glazed so shutting them cuts out the street noise. Shut out all the light and any stray decibels with the heavy vintage wood shutters.
Doubling as the dining area this room has a large dining table: good for eating, good for the laptops.
Fast, unlimited wifi internet (should be at least 10Mbps) and over 100 channels of IP TV on a 32″ flat screen TV come as standard.
Let’s move into the kitchen. Beautiful and functional. Green and grey ceramics interspersed with hand-made Sintra azulejos on the walls. Granite tops from the Alentejo region across the Tagus River. Integrated German Teka appliances: washing machine, dishwasher and large fridge freezer. The stove top is gas powered and oven is electric. Here’s all the pots and pans, glassware, crockery and cutlery to cook and eat up newly discovered Portuguese or old favourites. Or just admire it all and eat out. Toaster, whistling kettle and microwave too. And a 1 and a half basin kitchen sink.
In the bathroom we’ve tried to please everyone and put a compact bath with a shower over it.
The apartment has good access to the supply of food, wine and transport. The stone paved road is closed to general traffic but a taxi will get you right to the front door. Santa Apolonia station is 500 metres. Its a train and metro station and it connects you to the airport, the city centre or Chiado. There’s also a great budget car hire company in the station building.
It is possible to avoid public transport and just walk. There is a great pedestrian pathway along the river front that will take you to the lower end of downtown Baixa from where Chiado and Bairro Alto accessible.
Provisions: right downstairs is a general grocers and a wine boutique (garrafeira). At Santa Apolonia is a Pingo Doce supermarket that has bread, wine, beer, meat, fish, fresh produce, dairy and more.
Rua dos Remédios is saturated with fado venues, cafés, restaurants and arty bars. And this is just a microcosm of the rest of what Alfama has on offer in its labyrinthine walkways and along the lower river reaches. Small earthy basements bars, trendy and attractive wine ‘n wifi boutiques, budget and gourmet eating places.

We love Lisboa and wanted to own property in one of the most scenic and oldest parts of Lisbon.
We've just renovated our apartment and equipped it with all the things we like in a home. And we do like our luxuries so you're bound to be comfortable in our Frango.
We also like the fact that there is a small Pingo Doce down the road for groceries and a larger state-of-the-art one in Rua Madaleina which is about a 20 minute walk away.
Central, close to 2 metros (Terreiro do Paco & Santa Apolonia), listen to Fado at night for free, the beautiful Lisbon Street lamp hanging opposite our balcony, walk to Santa Appolonia to Pingo Doce and suddenly find you have a few thousand new neighbours in the form of 3 cruise ships lined up along the wharf.
Lots of view points to take your vinho verde and some glasses - Portas do Sol, Castello Sao Jorge, park above the Panteo Nationale..the list is endless.

The apartment itself is very nice, brand new furniture and fixtures, kitchen and bathroom with everything in very good working conditions. My wife and I stayed for 1 week and being in Alfama put us in the heart of a very lively and enjoyable neighborhood. We did plenty of walking or took cabs to go places, not being familiar with the public transportation - which apparently as we were told by the host is easily reachable from the apt.
By the way I would like to thank especially Vanessa Barroso who was at the wait when we arrived and was prompt in returning our safety deposit. She was super helpful in explaining the apt fixtures and was very gracious bringing up a new portable heater when the one in the apt failed to work.
We had complaints about work being done on the street down below, from very early in the morning to late in the evening. This should have been told by the owner before our booking. Another problem, especially for older people is the steep 2 flights of stairs to get to the apt from street level - it was hard to carry our suitcases upstairs.
Fantastic location, simple clean and spacious. Walk to train station, restaurants and Fado houses. Check in was easy, Vanessa helped with all our questions. Highly recommended
The apartment is situated in a very nice area, not far from the city centre and from bars, markets and places of interest. It is spacious and it has everything you need for a great stay! Looking forward to go back to Lisbon.
Nous avons passé un séjour très agréable dans un quartier très typique du vieux Lisbonne. Le logement est parfait, très propre, avec toutes les commodités et entièrement refait à neuf. Nous avons eu un excellent accueil à notre arrivée. À recommander sans aucune hésitation et il propose surtout l'avantage d'être très central pour visiter la ville et proche de tous les transports.
Nous avons passé un magnifique séjour dans votre appartement pour découvrir la merveilleuse ville de LISBONNE.
L'appartement a été très bien rénové, il est comme neuf, décoré avec beaucoup de goût et bien insonorisé - Bonne literie - Placards et penderie - Lave vaisselle et lave linge. La salle de bains avec le wc est juste un peu petite, mais ce n'est pas grave. Convient parfaitement à une famille avec 2 enfants ou 2 couples. Super bien situé dans l'Alfama avec épicerie, restaurant fado, dans la rue. La visite de Lisbonne peut se faire à pied depuis l'appartement. C'est un plaisir de partir de l'appartement à pied et de se promener dans les ruelles de l'Alfama. Aucune insécurité. Merci à vous.
Recently renovated apartment in Alfama. Apartment was clean and kitchen was well equipped. Located in a small street which is visited by tourists and tuk-tuks. There are shops, bars and restaurants in the street. Train/metro station is located conviniently nearby <500m, just down a steep street.
Good place to explore Alfama and other districts.
Alfama is an old part of Lisbon known for its mazes of narrow cobbled streets crammed with small apartment buildings, façades flying washlines of laundry, whose ground floors frequently house grocery stores, cafés and restaurants.
The Fado museum is a few minutes walk away, the famous church of Sao Vincente de Fora, and lots of Fado restaurants - in fact there's one right opposite our apartment called Sr Fado.
