really nice cottage, awesome scenery

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was a really nice place to stay in. It's very cozy and we felt welcomed seeing how it's well kept and clearly decorated with lots of love. We always enjoyed coming back to 'our' house in the evenings to end the day in the hot tub. Having slept comfortably in the quiet surrounding of the mountain, the view over the valley while the sun rose was enjoyable to watch in the mornings.

We were especially surprised at how big the guest house was, plus, we didn't expect the house to have such a big veranda and even a small garden to sit in.

We'd also like to thank Kristin again, as she tried her best to answer all the questions we had beforehand.

All of us wish to come back soon- I think you can rarely find such pretty places, so we'd highly recommend it!

A Wonderful Cottage in a Beautiful Location

  • 4 of 5

My family (four of us, including two teen boys) spent six nights at St. Martin’s Cottage in June 2015 and would rate this property very highly. For anybody looking to escape rush hour traffic or crowds of people in your daily life, St. Martin’s is the perfect solution. I selected it as a home base for exploring Southern Iceland, and while a property nearer to Selfoss may have shaved some time off of driving to a few destinations, I don’t think I could have found another property with as much charm and solitude.

Both the main cottage and second cottage (with additional bedroom) are in immaculate condition and the kitchen is equipped with everything needed to prepare basic meals. We found the bedrooms to be slightly small, with not a great deal of room for our bags; the boys’ solution was to sleep in the main cottage and use the spare cottage for the bathroom, luggage storage, and changing room. We used the hot pot a number of times, but fair warning: patience is required as it can take 2-3 hours to fill each time. However, since we were there over the summer solstice, daylight wasn’t a problem, and it was a wonderful sensation to soak away the weariness of a day's hiking at midnight with birds singing in the nearby screen of trees that offer additional privacy around the cottage. As we didn’t have compatible phone coverage, wi-fi in the cottage would have been nice to book a few excursions, but I overcame that challenge by parking outside a nearby hotel to take care of business.

The location is perfect for visiting Geysir and Strokkur (especially late in the evening after the tourists depart), and Gulfoss was closer than I imagined. In the other direction, the Fontana Spa in Laugavartn was about 30 minutes away, and is also highly recommended as a smaller, but more peaceful alternative to the Blue Lagoon.

Overall, I would happily spend another week in St. Martin’s Cottage if we’re ever lucky enough to return to Iceland.

Beautiful place!

  • 5 of 5

We had a very relaxing stay at Marteinsel. The cottage is well equipped, absolute private and quiet. Especially we enjoyed the hot tub nearly every evening. The geysir center is just a 20 minutes’ walk away but can’t be seen from the cottage.

Thanks to Kristín for the perfect organization and the interesting talk when we met in one of the other cottages.

Also thanks to the owners Sigga and Jón Örn for building this beautiful place.

Next time when we are in Iceland we hope to stay again there.

Beautiful cottage in rural surrounding

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 7 nights in St. Martin´s Cottage. It is located on a super location! Everything you can wish is present (except an Internet connection). Everything was nice and very clean. It was remarkable that in this vulcanic area the hot water didn´t have a sulfur smell. The cottage is a perfect starting point for trips. Gullfoss is very impressive, but the east side of the falls is much less touristic. The Geysir/Strokkur area is nice, especially late in the evening when most of the tourists are gone. Þingvellir is a visit worth. Walking on the Eurasian and American plates is a great experience. When you own a 4 wheel drive car, you are able to travel in the interior region of Iceland. We drove on roads F333 (starting point just behind Geysir), F338 and F337. Remember, you need a car with sufficient ground clearance. It was an exciting experience. Summarized, it was a great stay!

cozy cottage in a stunning sourrounding

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful place in a stunning surrounding. We spent 8 nights at St. Martin's Cottage. Kristin (the landlady) was always available for us with helpful hints and friendly advice. The cottage is comfortable, cozy, clean, very peaceful and quite. It is a private home, warmly and beautifully decorated. Excellent opportunities for day excursions, some of the top spots in South Island being just around the corner (geysirs). Always looked forward to be back at the cozy cottage and relax in the hot pool. The cottage has also an extra guest house specially suitable for kids, with an extra bathroom. We can definitly recommend St, Martin's cottage to discover Island and relax.
