THINGS TO DO
The area is popular for kayaking, jet skiing, snorkeling, diving, hiking, eco-jungle tours, zip lining, and white water rafting. Other amenities are tennis, windsurfing, and horse-back riding on the beach. Even more activities are deep-sea fishing, marine life observation, and scuba diving. Equipment rentals are available. Many activities are arranged at the Hotel Concierge and some at the Beach Club concierge. Telephone or email the Westin to find out more.
The WESTIN has 5 interesting ethnic restaurants. You get to many on a small tram that meanders through the resort and drops you off. Make reservations several days in advance in high season.
NEARBY LOCAL RESTAURANTS / GROCERIES
BUYING GROCERIES: You can hire a local chef to prepare meals or buy great produce, fish, chicken, and meat at several of the local markets. The best grocery store in the area is on the way to Tamarindo.
OTHER GROCERY STORES
Super Lopez is about a mile away......small and limited but great for water and a few essentials. Turn left out the Westin entrance onto the main road for about 1/2+ mile…it is on the right. Another grocery store called Massai Supermarket is in Playa Potrero across from the hardware store. Also turn left out the Westin entrance and follow the road for about 8 miles.
AREA RESTAURANTS: Most local restaurants offer wonderful traditional food and pizzas to order in or out at at a reasonable price. See local restaurant listings in the condo notebook with local phone numbers….many speak English and Spanish…….. Angelinas, Flamingo. Lalocanda Flamingo, Sailing center in Potrero and Castillo and Perlas, Smokey Pig, Tikis, Beach House Restaurant, and Numu. Playa Flamingo Beach has a wonderful casual beach restaurant, Coco Loco, right on the beach featuring burgers, fries and delicious tuna fish tacos, my favorite. The men at the front gate or concierge will give you directions.
NEARBY TOWNS TO VISIT
Tamarindo is a cute touristy town 30 minutes away featuring artisan shops as well as shops for clothing, jewelry, coffee and ice cream cafes, and restaurants on the beach. Other great places within a short ride are Playa Brassilito and Playa Protrero for local Tico fare.
Professional day and overnight tours are arranged at the Westin Hotel entrance to the Arenal Volcano, Mineral Hot Springs, Monteverde Cloud Forest, Parque National, Manuel Antonio, Montezuma Waterfalls, Jaco, white water rafting, historic old town San Jose, and many other places. Most tours are within a few hours drive from the hotel complex on vans so you can meet other adventure seekers.
Car rentals are located at the airport, off the airport, or at the hotel (Economy). I suggest renting a high off the ground SUV and taking pictures of it before you leave the rental place. They assess fees for damage and you can avoid that by going slowing up hilly areas with a high up car. Use your own insurance and their liability. Arrange pickups with Ecotrans Transport Company at the airport who will drop you directly to the condo and possibly take your luggage to the condo (Tip nicely if they take your luggage to the condo). Fees range anywhere from $25 -$50/person to and from the airport depending on van size and the number of people. The HOTEL jitney also offers pick up and delivery to all the pools, beach club, ocean swimming, spa, and restaurants….free or tip. Call concierge for pickup.
Commercial carriers servicing LIR (Liberia) airport: Air Berlin, Air Canada, American Airlines, Copa Airlines, Delta Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Jetblue, Nature Air (Domestic.Costa Rica), Sansa (Domestic.Costa Rica), Southwest, Alaskan, Taca, United, US Airways, West Jet
Costa Rica is a great place to learn Spanish. An excellent multilingual school for children and adults is a short distance away (CPI in Flamingo…).
OTHER CONDO INFORMATION
This Condo is a non-smoking unit but smoking is permitted on the veranda. Fees for smoking inside the condo are assessed as we would have to steam clean the unit afterwards at considerable expense. The Condo is furnished as our home so there is no maid service. Find trash cans in the parking area on the road above the condo.
CLEANING / TELEPHONE / UTILITIES
Daily or Weekly cleaning can be arranged for short or long term rentals which is extra. Short Term rentals include cost of utilities. Long term rentals (2-6 months) do NOT include utilities but the use of the beach club is always included. Telephone in the unit is for local calls only which is included in the price and also wifi is included.
THE CONCIERGE / CARD KEYS FOR THE CONDO
The concierge at the beach club is the best place to get advice other than the property manager - available for your questions during work hours. There is a notebook with phone numbers on the kitchen counter along with card keys for the front door in plastic purses for your use……keep keys dry in the small plastic bags and don’t put your cell phone in them as they sometimes demagnetize the card keys. If that happens, you have to run down to the concierge at the Beach Club and have the card keys reset.
A security deposit and partial rent is required upon reservation confirmation. We offer short term and long term rentals (up to 6 months).
A professionally staffed and equipped medical center is located in the Beach Club area. Also, The Metropolitano Hospital nearby is associated with Conchal. Call the concierge if you need to go there.
ABOUT THE WESTIN “RESERVA CONCHAL” OR PLAYA CONCHAL
Playa means beach in Spanish and conchal means shell….but the beach sand by the ocean is soft and smooth with millions of tiny crushed to softness shells from ages ago. The “reserva” was a 25 year plan to include residential units, a hotel, a beach club, an equestrian center, a golf club, and much more based on the Guanacastean concept which is respect for nature, its terrain, its climate, and its flora and fauna. There are still a few developments going on but the condo is extremely quiet and serene.
Snowbirds from northern climates enjoy rentals at the Westin complex from January through April/May or on the sides of those months. It is hot and dry in those months and more humid in the summer months. The ocean is always cool and easy to get in and out of.
CLOTHES TO BRING
Outdoor gear (especially sneakers and hiking shoes), tees, tanks, shorts, long pants, swimwear and cover ups. Costa Rica is very casual. Dress up attire is rarely needed except in some of the Westin restaurants where ladies wear casual dresses or pretty tops with flat sandals and guys wear nice casual attire. Costa Rica is casual, Eco—Centric (outdoorsy and nature oriented, respectful of its natural ecology), often hilly with many places having stairs up and down like they do in much of Europe. THE CONDO IS NOT WHEELCHAIR OR DISABILITY ACCESSIBLE.
My best to you, your friends and family on your “Pur Vida” vacation in Costa Rica. Pur Vida means “everything is good”!
