The Tailwater House: A Magical Place!
'Like' the Tailwater House on Facebook and learn more about us!
The Tailwater House offers first class accommodations in an unmatched natural setting. No dwellings are visible from the Tailwater; it is extremely private. The Tailwater offers all modern comforts and displays the hand-chosen accoutrements of a well-planned retreat. The Tailwater sits at the confluence of the West Fork of the Bitterroot River and Boulder Creek outside of Darby, Montana. Both watercourses flow out of the largest contiguous block of federally protected Wilderness in the lower 48 states, and meet one another at this very magical place. The Boulder Creek Trailhead into the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness is a short walk away.
From the Tailwater’s decks, patios, and picture windows, native westslope cutthroat trout, as well as rainbows, brookies, and browns may be seen plying the blue ribbon waters of the West Fork or returning to the cool waters of Boulder Creek to spawn. Kingfishers, mallards, hummingbirds, owls, ospreys, eagles, and many more avian species inhabit the forest in which the Tailwater House resides. Some of these birds may be fishing along side you! In the forests, meadows, and surrounding peaks, elk, moose, black bear, bighorn sheep, and intact ecological systems flourish in the Bitterroot and Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forests. Instream flows have been preserved on the West Fork for perpetuity. Deep pools abound in the waters surrounding the property. For flatwater enthusiasts, Painted Rocks Reservoir is a few miles away.
The Tailwater House offers pristine trout waters a few steps from the door. It is a fly fishing Mecca, but moreover, it is a magical escape in which Boulder Creek’s gurgling rhythms and the West Fork’s deep songs will serenade your worries away--all day and all night. Writers and artists take note; inspiration is a year-round occupant at the Tailwater.
The Tailwater House is 20-30 minutes by car from Darby, MT; 40-45 minutes from Hamilton, MT; and 1.5 hours from Missoula International Airport and the University of Montana, Missoula. The Tailwater is approximately a one half-day drive to both Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, as well as to Idaho's world-famous Salmon River.
There are several lodges within minutes of the tailwater that offer informal as well as fine dining options. These include the Triple Creek Ranch and the West Fork Lodge--both 5-10 minutes from the Tailwater House. Please google for the websites of these businesses as VRBO limits the websites we can list here.

The Tailwater Tale
The Tailwater is a magical place. It will be love at first sight, cast, or swim for you--as it was for us.
We purchased The Tailwater in 2006, and manage it as a family business. Our philosophy is one of sharing this special place for a reasonable price, rather than maximizing occupancy and income. We try hard to be conscientious stewards of The Tailwater and the ecosystem in which it exists. We ask that our guests do the same. It is our pleasure to share this special place and its inimitable moods and sylvan magic with you. We send our warmest thanks for your patronage,

A little hard to find, but once you're there it's worth it! The river is gorgeous. The cabin is well cared for and has tons of books, movies, and games, which came in handy during the rain. We look forward to coming back someday!
Great stay, great maps, superb volumes of reading (quality!) reading material...the river was Wonderful, hard to beat the overall environment. Remote, and that's just what we desired! Surprisingly there was no kitchen dish rag to be found, and a gas grill would have been preferred over charcoal, had good music set-up but few CDs (saw only the 5 included in the disc player). Toaster needed to be updated (or pressure washed). Town of Darby provided our food requirements sufficiently. The drive going west from North Fork was spectacular. Outdoor seating and chairs were excellent, many options to view the river. We enjoyed much time outside reading, tuning into the river, and enjoying our cocktails. Am sure there is wildlife around, but it was scarce during our stay. The owners, Holly and Alex, were pleasant and easy with whom to deal. We could easily return.
If you love nature, particularly fishing and hiking, and enjoy reading a book by a stream and watching the wildlife, it’s hard to think of a more perfect spot than The Tailwater House. (Note: If you need to be connected to the outside world and soak in a jetted tub, just move along; this isn’t your vacation spot.)
The setting, at the intersection of Boulder Creek and the West Fork of the Bitterroot, wraps the house in the sound of rushing water. The three deck spaces, two of them covered, allow you to enjoy a variety of views overlooking the water. The kitchen is large and well stocked with pans and utensils. Be sure and bring what you need in terms of food with you. The master bedroom’s king-size bed is very comfortable and makes for a good night’s sleep. The adjacent bathroom isn’t large, but it’s bright and the towels are thick and soft. The owners have stocked the house with an amazing library—there’s something to suit every taste. We spent our days fishing and reading—with some of the best fishing located right on the property.
The owners were responsive (thank you, Holly), and our whole visit couldn’t have been better. We’re already planning our return!
Tailwater was a fantastic place stay! We loved the numerous decks to sit and relax while listening to the river. The fishing could not have been better. The cabin was very clean and had everything that you could need. We spent many days just reading and relaxing outside. No tv or internet which we really enjoyed. We would definitely recommend this cabin! We can't wait to come back!
My husband and I celebrated our anniversary at the Tailwater. Such a special place. It is close to fabulous hikes for the adventure seekers but is nestled away in a perfect spot for those that want to come and stay put. We enjoyed hitting the trails each morning only to come back and relax by the river. We hope to come back again to the Tailwater and have recommended it to all our family.
Our family stayed 5 days at the Tailwater house in July. What a wonderfully perfect sanctuary! Every detail makes this house the perfect place! The kitchen is fully equipped with great tools for a cook-- quality cookware and sharp knives. There was never a need that wasn't met. We bought groceries in Hamilton on the way and cooked all our meals at the house. It was clean, cozy and quiet and our family enjoyed the extensive collection of DVDs, board games and especially BOOKS! Even though it rained several days, we were still able to fish and enjoy the outdoors with the great covered parts of the deck. The constant sound of the rushing river lulled us to sleep each night. We all caught numerous fish-- several species and sizes and enjoyed the wildlife. We saw an osprey fishing the river, a mule deer doe and her fawn, and squirrels. My daughter and I enjoyed a trail ride with Selway Adventures. There are lots of trail heads for hiking very close to the house. Comfy beds abound and there's a view from every window! If you are looking for a quiet, secluded, away-from-it-all, beautifully scenic place, the tailgater house will not disappoint!!
