2 bedrooms,1 bathroom, fabulous views,on Camel trail in woodland

Herons Lake is a lovely house of character set in beautiful gardens close to Camel trail. There are lovely river and woodland walks right on the doorstep.Wadebridge is 5mins away by car or about 20 on the cycle trail. We can provide 4 bicycles at a very reasonable charge for the duration of your stay. From here, you can cycle through Wadebridge to Padstow, the trail follows the river all the way to that beautiful harbour town. If you take the other direction,you can cycle to Bodmin or out to Helland Bridge,on the edge of Bodmin Moor. The nearest beaches are Daymer Bay and Polzeath, But there are fabulous beaches all along this spectacular coastline. Its great fun just to jump in the car and explore for yourselves. We are very fond of Crackington Haven, heading north. Padstow, Boscastle & Tintagel all within easy reach.

Herons Lake is set on the sunny side of the valley slopes so has fabulous views and there are fabulous walks in every direction. It is a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers. From our window we have seen britains smallest bird, the firecrest to some of our largest like the heron. We have as many as 6 members of the tit family feeding from our bird table as well woodpeckers, nuthatches and varios finches. Along the river, otters dippers and kingfishers are regularly seen. The house is set in lovely well maintained gardens and designed with the situation in mind. Lots of windows so very bright and airey in summer and cosey in winter. There are two bedrooms. The Main bedroom has a unique, beautifully carved, oak fourposter bed and has double aspect windows so like all the rooms, has amazing views. There is a large fitted wardrobe and wash basin.The second bedroom has twin beds a wash basin and fitted wardrobe and two windows with the same lovely views..The separate bathroom or should I say shower room, as there is no bath, is bright and spacious with a good power shower and a spacios cubicle.

Also upstairs, there is an office area with wi fi.and phone.

On the ground floor the spacious kitchen adjoins the dining area. There are fridges freezers and dishwasher and electric oven and hob. Off the entrance hall there is a utility room with washing machine toilet and sink unit. The spacious lounge is beautifully furnished with ample comfortable seating..There is a log burner and an ample supply of logs can be found in the shed, if you are a winter visitor. Wide screen tv with Humax Freesat+HD Freetime recording system as well DVD and Video Player. For music lovers there is also a CD and tape player.The lounge has double aspect windows and lovely views toward the river. French doors lead from the lounge and the kitchen/dining room onto a lovely decking area, which is a wonderful place to relax on the sunbeds or for alfresco dining. There are 2 other places with seating outside if you are looking for a bit of solitude. There is ample space for parking .

The popular town of Wadebridge is only 5-10 minutes away by car but is a lovely walk on the trail which runs alongside the river. It takes me less than an hour or 20mins.on the bike. Bikes can be hired in Wadebridge. The nearest beaches are Polzeath and Daymer Bay. Polzeath is well known as a very popular surfing beach and Daymer Bay is on the estuary of the river, scenically beautiful and very safe. Sir John Betjamin's grave is in the local churchyard on the golf course there. The popular sailing village of Rock is also nearby and from there you can get a ferry,(it saves the drive round ) to the very popular harbour village (small town) of Padstow. Now popularised by Rick Stein's many eating establishments. Good art galleries shops etc.and from here there are good boat trips

My wife Liz and I retired after 30 years in the hotel busines and have loved living in this beautiful valley. However we also have a very beautiful villa with private pool and lovely gardens in Oasis de Nazaret in Lanzarote, which we have been leting out for holidays,very successfully for 8 years..(also advertised on this homeandaway site) As we cannot be in two places at once and like to travel a lot we have decided to holiday let Herons Lake as well.

I was born and grew up in the Gloucester area, first in the village of Sandhurst then Gloucester and Tuffley. I was educated at the Central School. On leaving school did varios work, mainly in catering and sales.Started a business selling freezers and later included Frozen foods and had 3 shops in the area. In 1976 moved to Cornwall and bought Tolcarne Hotel and then in 82 mved to Willapark and created Willapark Manor Hotel which was very successfull and much loved by all who visited. We are sure that all who come to Herons Lake for a holiday will feel the same about here.

Why Liz or Nick Leeds chose Cornwall

Willapark was a very special place, considered to be one of the most beautifully situated hotels in cornwall, set in beautful grounds overlooking Bossiney Cove. When we decided to sell for health reasons we needed something a bit special to replace it.We fellin love with Herons Lake after just one viewing.

What makes this house unique

The house had everything we wanted, lots of light and spacious but really felt like home. But the situation is very special with beech woods behind the house and the river valley to the front and then acres and acres of forest to explore. A few days after viewing the house for the first time we came for a drive by to get another look from the outside and went for a short stroll in the meadows on the river bank. Well, I am a keen bird watcher and on that short stroll saw a grey wagtail, 2 kingfishers and a couple of dippers, so I took that as a sign!! We also love gardening and have enjoyed creating new features.

We really enjoyed our stay at Herons Lake. The four poster bed was lovely, I felt like princess and the pea. We loved watching the birds from the kitchen window and hearing the owls at night. There was everything you would need in the house. The gardens are beautiful and we went on several walks from the house. I would highly recommend this property to anyone.

Everyone loves that bed, we had a hotel for almost 30 years and I bought that bed for the Honeymoon Suite, so it could certainly tell a few tales! When we retired I had to keep it as it is so comfortable as well as beautifully carved. Regarding the birds, we do get some quite rare birds in the garden and the wild life in the woods and along the river was the deciding factor when we purchased Herons Lake. A week in rhe the woods

My husband and I stayed at Herons Lake for one week in September. This is a very welcoming cosy home which is very peaceful and well equipped, providing everything we needed. We felt quite at home there. On our arrival we were met by the owner, Nick, who showed us round and pointed out a bottle of bubbly in the fridge and various other food items. The accommodation was excellent. It was clean and tidy with excellent quality furnishings and a very comfortable bed. The weather was mixed and unfortunately we were unable to make full use of the lovely terrace. The house has brilliant views of the forest which We managed to walk in a number of times. The camel trail, originally a railway line between Padstow and Bodmin, pases at the bottom of the garden and is excellent if you enjoy cycling. Nick did offer to lend us a couple of bikes but unfortunately I was unable to ride at the time due to a fractured shoulder. The location is great with lots of interesting places not too far away. The road to get to the house is a single track (this is Cornwall after all) but there is hardly any traffic, and after a couple of journeys you get used to it. It reminded me of my younger days in my parents house in Northern Spain! We had a very enjoyable week in spite of the weather. I highly recommend it.

Fantastic rural retreat

Thank you Nick and Liz for the warm and friendly welcome, and for the supplies that greeted us on arrival.

Herons Lake is in a fantastic location, for a getaway from it all it is the perfect rural retreat and so peaceful. The cottage is really clean and well maintained along with the garden which is really pretty, it was wonderful watching and listening to the birds whilst sitting out on the decking. We found the gate at the bottom of the garden really handy for the camel trail which we walked along to Bodmin (dropping in at the tea room on the way back - fab) and also to Wadebridge, then onto Padstow, we also went into Wadebridge one evening to have an indian which was a pleasant walk there and back.

We would highly recommend Herons Lake for that much needed rural retreat and getaway.

The walks from Herons Lake are wonderful but we also lend out cycles. As well as the really good Indian restaurant, there is a Chinese and a couple of English. Fantastic cottage, lovely location

We were greeted by owners of the property Nick and Liz who showed us around and made us feel welcome. Herons Lake was the perfect location for our family beach/bike holiday. It was lovely and quiet but didn't feel isolated. Within minutes of being there my 9 year old daughter beamed "I love it already!". We were really impressed with the cottage it had everything you could ask for and to a high standard, very clean and well maintained. The garden was also beautifully maintained and had great places for the children to play hide and seek. It is surrounded by woodland which were accessible to walk through. We often sat or ate out on the decking overlooking the garden which had the sun all day and was extremely peaceful.

We made full use of the Camel Trail which passed just at the bottom of the garden. We cycled with our children ages 9 and 11 to Padstow (1hr from cottage) which had an icecream and refreshments stall approx half way to Padstow. In the other direction we headed to Bodmin (just under 1hr) along the trail there was a lovely tea shop (great cream teas!) just a little further on there was a pub but cannot comment on the establishment as we never visited it.

Wadebridge by bike was about 10-15mins which had a great range of shops and places to eat. My girls liked the play area in the local park.

Beaches were within 15mins drive. We enjoyed Polzeath beach as the girls loved the surfing there.

We were really impressed with this cottage and highly recommend it. The booking and contact with Nick and Liz was straightforward and informative.

We were so happy with this property that we are now looking into booking Nick and Liz's villa in Lanzarote, which looks fab!

Fantastic Family Holiday

Our first impression when looking on this website at the property is that you only rented part of the house and maybe shared it with other tenants or the owners – a complete misconception on our part. So although you would imagine a 2 bed, 1 bathroom place to be smaller, you get the whole deal! The house has a cottage charm in a remote quiet area assessable by a typical Cornish single width road. It feels isolated and private yet is only 10 minutes to Wadebridge/Bodmin. The owners respond promptly to any enquiries and will meet you at the property to show you around. They provide a small, lovely, thoughtful starter pack of groceries which enables you to get through the first evening without having to venture out again (Tesco do also deliver though!). The damage deposit laid down is returned to you within a couple of days of returning home – no fuss.

It is obvious that this is a loved lived in home rather than a holiday let and as such has so many more amenities that you wouldn’t normally expect. I couldn’t fault the kitchen and you were made to feel welcome to use any of the condiments/household items etc in the cupboards, this we did but were sensible with everything on offer and replaced anything that was completely used up.

Ample towels are provided and we made use of the two adult bikes on loan.

The pictures do not reflect the true size of the land available to you. In total over 3 acres, some of which is taken up by a paddock at the bottom of the garden which had sheep in whilst we were there. The gardens are well maintained but not level. Our kids aged 8 & 9 did not find the steps a problem but this may be an issue for a family with very small children. We loved that we could sit on the decking area chilling out looking at the remarkable view whilst the kids literally spent hours playing hide and seek in the garden!

You can see the River Camel and trail from the property and there is an access point just beyond the bottom of the garden. It is an easy, flat 15/20mins cycle to Wadebridge, longer to Bodmin but we did stop in a tea shop and pub on route. We found the best time to cycle was early evening when the trail was quieter.

This property ticked all our boxes for a family holiday and I have no doubt we will return!

Fantastic property and location, fabulous owners

Our stay at this property was fantastic. The property is very well appointed, clean, a very welcoming home away from home. The gardens are extremely well kept and quite a good size. I enjoyed playing games with my young children over the several days of our stay and they adored the space. The furnishing and facilities are maintained to a very high standard including a fully equipped kitchen and laundry area, which is important if you have children and/or enjoy the delights and activities at your doorstep. We primarily visited this area for the Camel Trail and we're delighted to find the trail literally at the bottom of the garden! The owners are fabulous people. Friendly, inviting and providing that extra personal touch when welcoming you into their property. Their hospitality and promptness when responding to enquiries during our initial booking was tremendous. We had a delightful stay, not just exploring the Camel Trail and surrounding area but an equally enjoyable stay in the property. It was a joy to come back in the evening. We highly recommend this property, a truly fabulous property with equally fabulous hosts!

The immediate area around Polbrock comprises of forestry and natural woodlands crossed with numerous trails. The river camel runs through this, flanked by the famous camel trail, from the inland moorland to the beautiful harbour town of Padstow. All along the coast there are wonderful walks along the coast path and a host of beatiful places to visit.Boscastle ,Tintagel, Port Isaac (made famous by Doc Martin) Port Quinn, Bude to the north and Newquay to the south, to name but a few. The Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan should be on your Must See list. Pecarrow house is nearby, in fact Pencarrow estate own much of the woodland that is all around us. There are numerous National Trust properties to visit. Lanhydrock near Bodmin, Cotehele, Trerice and many more beautiful houses and even more gardens. The coastal path is fabulous. Last weekend Liz and I walked to a spot, just North of Boscastle where we go to watch seals. Often we have seen as many as 70 seals at this special spot that not many people know about, but on this occasion the tide was higher than we wanted it to be and we only saw 29,one of which was a little white baby!
