About this property

Lovely Hunt Country 3-bedroom cottage with large deck & firepit on 3 acres

This charming cottage on three acres is located 8 miles south of Middleburg near the picturesque village of The Plains, VA. We are in the heart of Hunt Country (wine and horse country) in the foothills of the Appalachians, 50 miles west of DC on 66. The home is perfect for a quiet getaway. Renovated thoughtfully, it retains its charm and 19th-century stone foundation. The fully equipped kitchen/dining room has an open plan while the sunroom opens to a large deck overlooking the expansive lawn. We have satellite tv in the living room and a smart TV upstairs. We have unlimited high-speed internet through T-mobile.

Three of the beds are trundles that pull out from the twin beds (all real mattresses). The one downstairs is a pop-up. The location of the property is ideal for hiking (close to the Appalachian Trail), biking, and horseback riding. Artists will appreciate the rolling hills, historic architecture, and miles of old stone fences. Enjoy the many surrounding wineries, antiquing, orchards, and fine dining establishments nearby, or pack a picnic (we provide a basket and blanket) and enjoy "Twilight Polo" up close every Saturday evening throughout the summer in The Plains' own Great Meadow where the VA Cup steeplechases are held annually. The farmer's market in The Plains is each Sunday from spring to fall. Boarding and horseback riding lessons are possible across the road at Madcap Farm. Horses neighing or roosters crowing in the distance will remind you that it is time to relax and take in the country air.

You'll have the entire house (first and second floor) and, of course, the deck and the 3 acre lawn. We provide both indoor and outdoor games (like horse shoes and croquet) and have over 250 movies (plus kids movies) and DVD players on both floors. The basement may be used for laundry purposes only and is off-limits to children. Although we have beds for eight, it is a cottage, so we recommend no more than six adults.

Although we may not always be there to greet you, we are a text or phone call away. I have provided a house manual which lists recommended restaurants, coffee shops, parks and outdoor activities, house info and emergency info.

We love staying at the house when time allows so you will find that we leave some basics there for our use - and for yours if needed. The kitchen cupboards have staples and spices, oils, etc. In the refrigerator you'll find condiments, salad dressings, etc. Likewise, in the bathroom medicine cabinets, you will find some necessities so you won't need to run to the store for that little thing you forgot. Also, we do have a security camera in the driveway since the property is not always occupied.

PLEASE NOTE: Our base price is listed above, but we do charge $20 per person per night for additional guests after the first two. Children under 2 are free. We are not too far from the road so we expect that children (and/or dogs) will be watched. We welcome guests planning a relaxing weekend but we ask that binge drinkers and wild partiers please book elsewhere.

Wonderful and relaxing respite from the city
Set in rolling fields and woods of Virginia's horse country, Rob and Lina's house is warm and inviting. We enjoyed the countryside, dining and shopping in Marshall, Middleburg and The Plains, and came back to the outdoor fire pit in the evenings. We plan on coming back again.

About the host

Hosted by Robert and Lina Liberace

Host profile image
We (Rob and Lina Liberace) are artists who love to create, play baseball (Rob), antique (Lina) and to renovate old spaces. We have two daughters (also artists). We spend a lot of our time traveling - It helps that Rob teaches art workshops in the US and overseas. We hope that the country house we've thoughtfully updated and renovated brings others the same joy and relaxation it brings to us. We have tried to provide the same conveniences to our guests that we would like to have when traveling.

Why they chose this property

We were very lucky to find this charming house in a wonderful location. With artistic energy and elbow grease, it is now a little gem in the heart of the most beautiful area in Virginia - the rolling hills of the Piedmont region. It is in the country yet close to so much!

What makes this property unique

Enjoy artwork and antiques in beautifully renovated home in Virginia's rolling foothills. Outside you can sip wine on the large deck looking over an expansive lawn. Swing on the tree swing, lie down and stargaze in the backyard, or enjoy the grill or fire pit. In the distance you'll hear roosters crowing and horses neighing from across the road. Just two miles in both directions are lovely little towns with great coffee shops and upscale shops and farm-to-table restaurants. Eight miles to the north is Middleburg, with its Hunt Country charm. Surrounding us are more wineries and antique shops than you can ever do in a weekend. It is hard to believe that Washington DC is only one hour to the east.
