About Andrew Philips
Warm greetings from the Philips family. We're so excited you are taking a look at 'Peace of Eden' and very much hope you will come and enjoy a holiday in our Czech holiday haven. We call it our “Secret Garden”, nestling at the heart of Europe in the Czesky Raj (Czech Paradise). We'd love to share it with you. We live near Studham, not far from London, in the United Kingdom. Andrew is a construction Project Manager who runs his own business and specialises in commercial office interior fit-out and refurbishment projects; Linda is a specialist Speech and Language Therapist who works with individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorders; our daughters are Ashlea - studying at University and Shannen, still at school. Linda and Andrew grew up in Durban and Cape Town in South Africa where we went to school and university before emigrating to live in England where Ashlea and Shannen were born. We're adventurers at heart who love the outdoors. We thrive on discovering and exploring new places. We thoroughly enjoy the challenge of overcoming foreign languages, meeting new people and making new friends. Despite the unfamiliarity of the Czech language, we've discovered that we can achieve anything with sign language and a willingness to have-a-go. We laugh loads and have had many memorable experiences in our Garden of Eden. We've discovered the truth of the saying that 'the best part of memories is making them'. We hope you'll visit Eden and discover that for yourselves.
Andrew Philips purchased this House in 2007
Why Andrew Philips chose Karlovice
We found and fell in love with the Czech Paradise in 2007. Having grown up with the wild, open spaces of Africa, we were delighted to discover this little known, adventure wonderland that offers a magical escape 'far from the madding crowds' of the UK. Within 1 hour drive to Prague, one of Europe's most beautiful capital cities, and only 1½ hours from Prague International Airport (Vaclav Havel Airport), Peace of Eden is easy to get to. It is only a two hour flight from London Stansted and door-to-door, we can get to our cottage more quickly than Devon and Cornwall in the UK. And the mystical forests, rolling hills and fascinating 'rock towns' have kept us enthralled through many holiday adventures. It still amazes us that, while Prague is such a well known holiday destination, so few Tourist visitors have ventured out into the 'wilds' of the Czech countryside. The region is authentic Czech. This is a rare opportunity for seclusion in overwhelmingly crowded Europe. The history of the region is fascinating too. The Czech Republic - recently rebadged Czechia - as it exists today was formed in 1993 after separation from Slovakia having together previously formed Czechoslovakia. Only a few years earlier, this area was inaccessible to Westerners, locked away behind the Iron Curtain under Communist rule. And Peace of Eden makes the perfect base from which to discover and explore this amazing holiday destination. Whether looking for an adventure or desperate for a rest, Peace of Eden is a great place to satisfy your holiday dreams.

Top Class in Eden
A fantastic house in a beautiful part of the world. Comfortably slept 8 (two families of 4) without any squabbling over who gets the better rooms and bathroom - they are all really first rate.
An amazing kitchen - with all the mod-cons you could possible hope for, a lovely lounge for relaxing around the fire (though we were there in July so the only fires we made were on the BBQ). The 4 teenagers (and some others) appreciated the very good quality WiFi - but for those of us more inclined to find a comfortable corner to read a book in, there were lots of those too.
Such a great part of the world, we felt like we barely scratched the surface of things to do locally - certainly scrambling over the various rock "towns" was the highlight for most.
Thanks Andrew and Linda - you couldn't have made us feel more welcome.
Delightful home in the beautiful countryside
My husband and I stayed at Peace of Eden with our adult daughters and son-in-law, and we recommend it wholeheartedly. We felt we were in an ideal location for exploring the beauties of northern and eastern Bohemia.
With three full bathrooms and very private bedrooms, the lovely, spacious, immaculately clean house was perfect for us. The modern kitchen and large dining area suited us well when we chose to eat at home, and we appreciated the comfortable great room with its leather furniture, carefully chosen fabrics, and easy-to-use heating. We were at the house in early October, and because it was cool and we had rain showers most days, we didn't spend time outside. But we never felt confined, since we had many nooks where we could spread out.
We were surprised to discover how many things there were to do and see within short drives from the house. We drove through the Cesky raj area (the house is very close to both the Trosky and Kost Castles); spent time in the Giant Mountains on the Polish border; enjoyed restaurants in Mala Skala, Jicin, Turnov and Frydstejn; and traveled to Prague and Kutna Hora. The fall colors were beautiful!
Thank you for your positive review. We're so delighted you enjoyed your visit to the magical Czech Paradise. It's always exciting when our guests experience and enjoy some of the many new discoveries we've enjoyed ourselves over the last 10 years. Well done for bringing your Spirit of Adventure !! We hope you'll visit again and look forward to welcoming you back.
Excellent host, good property
Andrew is a very good host, took care every minute detail. Property is good, well equipped, at very good picturesque location. Only thing which bothered us was a typical smell, particularly in one bath room. Andrew, please resolve this issue. We would love to visit this lovely villa again.
A very lovely house
My wife and I stayed for week at "Peace of Eden" and can only say how delighted we were with the house. The house has been refurbished to a very high standard, with great facilities. a fantastic kitchen, lounge , 4 great bedrooms and very luxurious bathrooms, 2 of which are en-suite. The location is far away from the hustle and bustle that we are used to...very relaxing from enjoying the lovely garden, the very nice weber bbq, the table tennis table and the trampoline all set up in the garden. We would certainly recommend staying here...thanks Andrew and Linda for all the help, and the brilliant directions ensuring we found our way to the house without any problems..
The location is quite remote, but a few minutes in the car gets you into Turnov, with the Lidl supermarket and other facilities that might be needed.
'Peace of Eden' is located in the heart of the Czech Paradise (Cesky Raj), the first UNESCO GeoPark in Czechia (the Czech Republic). We call it our 'secret garden' at the heart of Europe.
'Peace of Eden' is super accessible being only 1½ hours / 122 km from Prague International Airport (Vaclav Havel Airport) and 1 hour / 97 km from the centre of Prague, by car.
The region is famous for its forests and magical 'rock towns'. These sandstone rock formations have been sculpted by the elements into natural creations of Gothic grandeur and Baroque extravagance. Along with medieval castles, neo-Gothic stately homes and other historical gems, the area is an adventurer's paradise just waiting to be explored.
Each season has its own lure - from autumn's gorgeous colours that gild the misty forests, to the magical snowy wonderland of winter, to spring's multitude of glowing greens and the relaxing warmth of summer's lazy days.
For activity junkies, mountain biking, rock scrambling and climbing, hiking, downhill and cross-country skiing, river kayaking and trail running are just a few of the options to choose from.
For those looking for a slower pace: enjoy picnics and rambles through the forests, laze next to a lake or bubbling river, explore the rock towns, visit historic attractions or just while away the hours with a great book. Sip from a tall glass of iced tea or one of the many famous local beers in the 3½ acre meadow garden.
And for jaded city dwellers overwhelmed by the busyness of life, the Czech Paradise is the perfect place to escape 'far from the madding crowd' ... the area is quiet, peaceful and crowd-free.
The wide variety of scenic drives throughout the area are delightful. If you are willing to venture a little further afield then the centre of Prague is only 1 hour away, perfect for a day trip - why not enjoy dinner in the Old Town before heading back to Peace of Eden.
Being only 45 minutes from the Czech border, it is also easy to venture into Germany or Poland to broaden your horizons. Beautiful Dresden, with its fascinating history, is 2½ hours / 180 km away. Jelenia Gora, in southern Poland, is only 1½ hours / 74 km away through the winding passes of the Krkonose (Giant) Mountains.
