About the property

3 bed character country home with views of Monflanquin and private heated pool

Gite Gardes is a recently renovated 3 bedroom stone barn set in 9 acres of gardens with beautiful views across the valley to the medieval bastide village of Monflanquin (classified as l'un des plus beaux villages de France). A rural location but within easy access to local shops and services, this is the Ideal base for a family holiday, or a group of friends to explore the glorious Dordogne, Lot, Garonne and Tarn valleys.

The accommodation is all on one level and includes 2 king size bedrooms with shared en-suite walk-in (roll-in) shower room and one twin bedroom with wash basin. A double sofa bed is also available for additional guests. The separate family bathroom includes roll top bath with stunning views across the valley to Monflanquin. There is also an additional shower room.

Relax in the spacious and light open plan living area which comfortably accommodates up to 8 people, with sofas and an eight seater dining table. Facilities include UK and French HD TV, Bluray/DVD player, free WIFI access and ipod docking station and CD player.

The living area flows into the spacious and well equipped modern kitchen, with its own breakfast table. Facilities include cooker, microwave, kettle, toaster, coffee maker, dishwasher, washing machine and iron and ironing board.

Large patio doors lead out from the kitchen onto the private and secluded outdoor dining terrace and barbecue area set in a walled garden with ancient bread ovens. The stunning views across the wooded valley make this a wonderful space for relaxing with family and friends.

Three charming stone archways lead out to the private south facing sunbathing area with private heated pool (pool heated May - October) and games room. There is also a swing set for younger children as well as a badminton net and table football.

The games room also provides secure, lockable and dry storage for bicycles.

The owners live on site in a separate building, but guests are welcome to explore the nine acres of land which is a mix of woodland, prairie and more formal gardens, for peaceful walks and wildlife spotting.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Beautiful, relaxing location.

  • 5 of 5

Jim and Jo were perfect hosts and nothing was too much trouble. The property is a beautifully restored old stone barn with a contemporary and comfortable interior. The kitchen is well equipped for self catering. The outside areas are great: a north facing courtyard with views over the valley and Monflanquin, and a south facing patio with a lovely fig tree to sit in the shade of, and a good-sized pool to cool off in and play with the kids. There are also extensive grounds that we were free to explore. A car is essential and there’s not really much within easy walking distance (if you have small children as we do!) We would not hesitate to return.

Great place for a relaxing holiday

  • 5 of 5

A very beautiful and setting houses this lovely gite. The house is very spacious and well equipped and provides a great base for a relaxing holiday. The outside space is great and you have areas in the sun all day so you can enjoy either a day at the house or just relax after returning from sightseeing. Monflanquin is beautiful but you are well-placed for many different trips, activities or days exploring a truly beautiful area of France.

Jim and Jo are very kind and helpful hosts who take great pride and care in ensuring everything is maintained to the highest standard. They live next door, on site, and come to clean the pool every morning but are never intrusive. They are more than happy to help with recommendations if asked and provided us with some very good ones indeed. I would not hesitate to return if we were in the area again and would happily recommend Gardes.

Beautiful Gite, Superb facilities, lovely location

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful 2 week holiday here. We are a family of 5 ranging from Grandparents to a 3 year including a wheelchair user.

The property was beautiful and easy to find from the detailed directions given by the owners Jim & Jo who kindly showed us around and left us a few treats to enjoy on arrival :) They were perfect hosts and there was plenty of information provided on the local area and places to go/things to see etc. We took up a few of these recommendations and had a lovely few days out exploring local markets and chateaus in this beautiful area of France.

The property was beautifully decorated, the beds were very comfy and it had everything and more we needed. From the point of view of a wheelchair user the property is extremely suitable. It is all on one level, the doorways are wide and the shower is a roll in shower on one level.

The pool was brilliant and we all enjoyed this everyday. Being heated was a big bonus and meant we still enjoyed this even when we had a few cooler days. Our daughter was able to

Swim a while length by the end of the holiday.

We enjoyed BBQs most evenings and did go out for dinner in the local towns on a few occasions too.

We had a throughly enjoyable holiday and would

Love to return. Thanks to the lovely hosts Jim & Jo!

Great Location, Great Gite, Great Pool

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with our two teenagers. It is the perfect location, the gite is

tucked away down a long drive, has fantastic views of the nearby village on the

hill, is surrounded by farmland and woodland. We loved sitting in the garden

and just listening to the birds and wildlife. The pool is amazing, we spent

hours in it, loads of toys and inflatables from the games room on hand to

borrow. The games room also has a table football. Jim the owner comes over

every morning to clean the pool so it is kept immaculate. The gite is perfect,

you walk into a big open living/dining area with tiled floors, comfy sofas and

TV/DVD player which opens into a lovely fully equipped kitchen with loads of

storage. This opens to an outside dining area/garden with stunning views. There

are three bedrooms, beautifully decorated and furnished and three bath/shower

rooms. Everything is immaculate. Jim and Jo are so welcoming and helpful,

nothing was too much trouble. We hired bikes while we there and were able to

cycle to the local village, although it was too much for a couple of us as it

was really hot. We had a hire car and enjoyed visiting lots of pretty local

villages and chateaus nearby. We also did canoeing down the River Dordogne

which was an amazing experience although 14 km was definitely a bit too long

for us! So overall a perfect holiday and we would definitely recommend it, and

will definitely be going back

A wonderful haven of peace and tranquility

  • 5 of 5

We booked a week with Jim and Jo at the last minute and from our first email conversations to the end of our stay we felt so welcome and at home. This wonderful home from home was perfect in every way - large spacious rooms, beautiful cool tiles if you wanted respite from the sun, comfortable beds, fabulous showers, magnificent views from the different outside sitting places and a wonderful pool to cool off in. Most of all we enjoyed the peace and tranquillity in this beautiful part of France - yet just a few minutes up the road is beautiful Monflanquin and all the amenities you need. Jim and Jo are the perfect hosts - warm, welcoming, friendly, on hand if you need them but discreet and respectful of your privacy too. We will definitely be returning very soon!

Within easy access to the Dordogne, Lot, Garonne and Tarn valleys, there is plenty to see and do whatever your interests and age and whatever the time of year.

You can explore numerous bastide villages (e.g. Monflanquin, Monpazier, Villereal), medieval towns (e.g. Penne d'Agenais, Pujols, Bergerac, Sarlat, Beynac, Domme), chateaux (e.g. Biron, Bonaguil, Gavaudun, Monbazillac, Beynac, Castelnaud, Bridoire), caves including those with prehistoric cave paintings and dwellings (e.g Lascaux, Font de Gaume, Roque St-Christopher, Pech-Merle), vineyards of the Cahors, Bergerac and Bordeaux regions, producers of other local products (e.g. duck, prunes, honey, walnuts, truffles), gardens (e.g. Marqueyssac, Limeuil, Eyrignac).

Walking: there are over 300 well signed and maintained circular routes with clear mapping available to download free from the Lot-et-Garonne tourism website, ask the owners for suggestions.

Cycling: we have secure, lockable and dry storage facilities for bicycles. There are bike supply and repair shops in Villeneuve sur Lot. Alternatively you can hire bikes locally in Monflanquin. The Lot-et-Garonne tourism website has around 30 well mapped cycling routes to choose from, as well as the Lot Valley cycle route.

You can also enjoy activities such as swimming in local lakes and rivers, fishing, canoeing, boat trips, horse riding, quad biking, sky parks, animal parks, tennis, golf etc.

Monflanquin is less than 5km from the Gite (50 minute countryside walk) and has all amenities including supermarket, boulangeries, weekly local produce market, restaurants, bars, pharmacy, doctors, banks and post office. In July and August many local villages in the area, including Monflanquin have weekly night markets where you can enjoy local food and wine sat at communal tables in the village square listening to music and other entertainment. A great opportunity to become immersed in local village life.

The town of Villeneuve sur Lot is 20km away and has even more extensive amenities and shopping, including hyper-markets and a Michelin star restaurant.
