Coachmans Cottage, Steeple Ashton, Wiltshire. A stunning English Country Cottage in the centre of the picturesque award winning conservation village of Steeple Ashton in Wiltshire close and to the Somerset border.

Independently assessed annually by the Tourist Board, VisitEngland,

at 4 STAR with the GOLD AWARD, which is only awarded to top cottages. Scoring 100% for Cleanliness and Management and Efficiency. Be assured that ALL regulations and insurances are in place.

Coachmans Cottage all ground floor, self catering accommodation sleeps 4 guests in 2 bedrooms, children over 12 years old are welcome. With comfortable sofas, a super-king size bed (or 3'Twin beds) and a double bed, all with pocket sprung mattresses, a log fire, full central heating and double glazing. Wifi, Freeview TV with a DVD player. Private parking for one car and a small pretty secure courtyard garden. The beautifully furnished and immaculate cottage has all home comforts, modern conveniences. The cottage is annually decorated with a spring clean, including cleaning of carpets, curtains and soft furnishings annually, to maintain the exceptional high standard.

Steeple Ashton was granted a charter to hold a market in 1266 and retains many 16th and 17th Century buildings today. A well stocked Award Winning Shop, “The Longs Arms”, a traditional English pub with a beer garden, and the magnificent “St Mary's” Church are all a short stroll from Coachmans Cottage and there are beautiful country walks from the cottage gate.

Within easy reach are the cities of Bath, Salisbury and Wells. World Heritage Sites Stonehenge and Avebury. Longleat House and Safari Park; Stourhead Gardens; the National Trust Village of Lacock and Bradford on Avon. A day trip to the Cotswolds, a visit the south coast, or a day in London by train are all popular with guests.

The single storey cottage accommodation is accessed from the entrance hall.

Pocket Sprung mattress, or 3'Twin Beds. Freeview T.V. and clock radio.

A pretty, Double Bedroom with pocket sprung mattress.

Luxury beds ensure a good nights sleep, cotton bed linen, duvets and extra blankets, built-in wardrobes, chests of drawers, bedside tables/lamps and hair dryers in both rooms.

About Penny Hornsey

We moved to Steeple Ashton in 1976 and now really can't imagine living anywhere else. In the past we had shops in Bath and Bradford on Avon selling early antique country furniture and offering interior design advice, which is reflected in the comfortable and co-ordinated interior at Coachmans Cottage.

Why Penny Hornsey chose England

Coachmans Cottage was purchased in 1986 for my Grandmother. She spent 6 very happy years living here. Now we would not want to part with the cottage next door, it is too much a part of our lives, and meeting all of the special guests that come to stay over the years is such an added bonus.

What makes this cottage unique

Coachmans Cottage is situated in the heart of this beautiful, award winning, conservation village, on a quiet lane just off the village green. The Longs Arms pub, serves good food. Pick up hot croissants for breakfast and a daily paper from the Award Winning village shop, both are only 100/200 metres away. St Mary's Church is a short stroll in the opposite direction. The friendly villagers make visitors very welcome and as a past guest wrote in the Visitor Book 'like Midsummer without the murder'! For those who enjoy walking the 'Friends of Steeple Ashton' have compiled a number of walks starting from St Marys church, ranging from 2 to 8 miles, copies are in the cottage for guests use.

Really enjoyed our stay in the cottage and felt at home as soon as we arrived, with a lovely welcome pack and home made chocolate cake to greet us on our arrival. The cottage is very cosy, well equipped and comfortable for three to four people. It also benefits from a small courtyard at the front, which acts as a sun trap during the late afternoon / early evening. The kitchen is very small & narrow, so you need to be well organized if you are cooking an evening meal due to the limited space. However, If you don't fancy cooking, there are plenty of excellent pubs & restaurants in the local area, all within 15 minutes of the cottage. Penny the owner was also so helpful during our stay, offering advice if needed on certain locations or just saying hello after walking her two dogs. I would gladly recommend the cottage and hope to return in the future.

Get a taste of village life, use the shop and pub, you can meet and chat with the locals who have a wealth of local knowledge. Visit the alpaca farm in Steeple Ashton, arrange a private tour around the village, learn about campanology, or join in if you are already a ringer. Hop on a bus to Trowbridge and catch a train into Bath or if preferred we have a local taxi you can book.

Everything I hoped it would be!

The cottage is perfect, the village is perfect and Peter and Penny are just wonderful, we stayed for just over two weeks and had a great time...and we will be going back at the first opportunity.

Overall fabulous.

Super clean, great location, charming as it comes, Very nice owners.

If we had one slightly negative comment I would say the kitchen is really only suitable for light meals and breakfast as its fairly small but as we typically eat out on vacation, or have cheese, bread & wine when staying in, it was not an issue.

On that note, you MUST try the local pub for meals and friendly staff, and the local shop has about everything you will need.

Close to may great attractions. Try renting a canal barge for a day. we did and had a fantastic time!

As you point out the kitchen is small as we state in all of our advertising, I am sorry that you found this challenging, regrettably we are unable to "push the walls out" but as you say it is more than adequate for a holiday being well equipped with a dishwasher, washer/dryer, microwave/grill, oven, hob and fridge, in addition to a full range of good quality cooking utensils, crockery, glasses and cutlery. I have cooked a four course meal for 8 in Coachmans on numerous occasions but it does take a little organisation! I hope that this will not put you off returning to see more of Wiltshire on your next visit to the UK. Best, Penny.

Perfect and Beautiful

We just spent a week in Coachmans Cottage which is a perfect cottage in the beautiful village of Steeple Ashton. Penny and Peter are warm and wonderful hosts. The cottage felt like home right away. It is beautifully decorated, extremely comfortable, and wonderfully functional. The local pub, The Longs Arms, is a short stroll from the cottage and was a great place for catching dinner when we were too tired to cook.

We found Coachmans Cottage to be a great central point to visit Wells Cathedral, Bath, Glastonbury, and my favorite, Great Chalfield Manor. We highly recommend Coachmans Cottage - thank you Penny for everything!

A relaxing visit

We had a really lovely 9 days at Coachmans Cottage and both agreed it was a fantastic place to stay. Penny had set out a welcome tea tray with homemade brownies and there was also a hospitality hamper on arrival. We were met with a small tour of the house and we felt all our needs were catered for. The house was immaculate and yet it felt a real home from home.

Our visits included: The Bath Pump room restaurant to celebrate our 26th wedding anniversary, Wells Cathedral for the one wet day and Stourhead Gardens.

The local pub The Longs Arms was a very friendly venue for a good evening meal and we were fed well. Also on several nights in the cottage we lit the wood fire which made it very cosy.

We both felt we would struggle to find fault with this accommodation and agreed we had had a perfect getaway.

Spent a fantastic holiday in Coachmans Cottage

When I found this great accomodation on the internet, I immediately fell in love with it. The pictures of the house, of its luxury interior and of the village convinced me from the very first moment that this was THE place to spend my next holidays. The first contact (by phone) with Penny, the landlady of the cottage, was very pleasant which was already a good start for me! So I booked it right away. And I must say, I do not regret it. To the contrary, reality bested all expectations. I have spent a most wonderful week in Coachmans Cottage and in the very warm and inviting community of Steeple Ashton. Everything, and I really mean everything, was perfect. As written on the website, the cottage is most certainly immaculate, individual, comfortable and furnished to a very high standard. The beds were luxurious and comfortable. I was also very happy to find a well fitted kitchen with all accessories to cater for myself.

I expect from a vacation home that I am comfortable and feel at home. I did.

Penny and Peter did everything to make me feel at home. When I arrived I found butter, milk, bread, eggs and grounded coffee in the kitchen! They gave me lots of very useful tips for excursions in the area. And we had our chitchat (in a very pleasant way!) every day (I wanted it that way, and I appreciated it too). It was so nice. You must know that Peter and Penny live next door. So, when I needed something or just had questions with regards to the cottage or needed some nice hints for a daytrip, I just rang their bell and we talked.

The village: Steeple Ashton is a very small village. There is a lovely little village shop on the main street, run by volunteers from the community. So nice people too. They put aside the daily newspaper and croissants for me every morning. And when I collected those, I had a coffee in the shop (which is served by very friendly people). I was taken up the belltower of the village church and visited the bell ringers. The church warden invited me also up on the roof of the bell tower and showed me the great view from up there over the area. My idea of holiday is connecting with the people of the community. And I must say that the contacts with all the people of Steeple Ashton, including Peter and Penny, was one of my nicest experiences here.

The area: You should really go out and make daytrips. The area is wonderful.

I can certainly recommend Coachmans Cottage to all those who would like to spend a nice and relaxing holiday.

Tranquillity in Steeple Ashton

We first discovered Coachman's Cottage 3 years ago and after such an idyllic stay in a peaceful location central to everything we wanted to see in the West Country we decided to go back.

They say that you cannot go back without disappointment but we found that Penny and Peter had the cottage even more comfortable. It confirmed our view that you are not just renting a luxury cottage, but joining a friendly, tight knit community.

Penny and Peter were perfect hosts giving us travel tips and a comprehensive list of local pubs to savour the local fare. In short we could not recommend Coachman's Cottage more highly and will provide details to any Australian friends wanting to see the West Country.

We work hard at keeping up the standard of Coachmans Cottage and to this end make constant improvements. Since you left 2 weeks ago we have taken advantage of a gap in bookings to undertake work needed, in addition to smaller additions and decorating, the twin bedroom has new carpet and pictures and the master bedroom now has an upgraded 1500 sprung mattress. Now in the 11th year as a holiday cottage, guests attracted to Coachmans appreciate the personal and caring service that we is a very fine line between being helpful but not intrusive hosts!
