About Penny Hornsey

Our family, with 2 Golden Retrievers, moved to Steeple Ashton in 1976 and now we really can't imagine living anywhere else. In the past we had shops in Bath and Bradford on Avon selling early antique country furniture and offering interior design advice. Hence the comfortable and co-ordinated interior at Coachmans Cottage.

Penny Hornsey purchased this cottage in 1986

Why Penny Hornsey chose Wiltshire

Coachmans Cottage was purchased in 1986 for my Grandmother. . She spent 6 very happy years living here. Now we would not want to part with the cottage next door, it is too much a part of our lives, and meeting all of the special guests that come to stay over the years is such an added bonus.

What makes this cottage unique

Coachmans Cottage is situated in the heart of this beautiful, award winning, conservation village, on a quiet lane just off the village green. The Longs Arms pub, serves good food. Pick up hot croissants for breakfast and a daily paper from the Award Winning village shop, both are only 100/200 metres away. St Marys Church is a short stroll in the opposite direction. The friendly villagers make visitors very welcome and as a past guest wrote in the Visitor Book 'like Midsummer without the murder'! For those who enjoy walking the 'Friends of Steeple Ashton' have compiled a number of walks starting from St Marys church, ranging from 2 to 8 miles, copies are in the cottage for guests use.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a lovely week at Coachmans Cottage in April. It is an easy drive from Heathrow and a great place to recover from 8 hours jet lag after flying from western Canada! The cottage is peaceful, a short stroll from the shop and the pub, has nice walks from the door, and is perfectly located for visits to the many nearby gardens, cathedrals, and delightful villages. The cottage is very comfortable, clean, and well-equipped. Penny, the owner,is very helpful, and we were grateful for the delicious welcome tea. We're looking forward to another stay on our next visit to the UK!

Response: It was a great pleasure meeting you both and so pleased that all was well received, including the tea tray. We look forward to welcoming you back at a future date. Best, Penny

COACHMANS COTTAGE. excellent well decorated and furnished cottage.

  • 5 of 5

This is a delightful cottage very well maintained by the friendly and helpful owners. The welcome breakfast basket was much appreciated. The village is very old and pretty with a pub only 100 mtrs away and a church almost the size of a cathedral. There are many old and interesting buildings and the village is calm and peaceful. The surrounding area is fairly flat but has good places to visit, the canal basin at Bradford on Avon was great fun with the canal trust cafe a good place to eat. For shopping try Salisbury with its huge cathedral and fine surroundings. A must to visit is Stourhead gardens and house, take a camera for the beautiful views. This cottage is highly recommended .

PS For Salisbury use park and ride, cheap and quick as parking in the city is poor.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for posting this review. I think it accurately describes the delight of Steeple Ashton. What a clever tip to suggest using the park and ride in Salisbury and it is well worth thinking the same way when visiting Bath. Best, Penny.

Perfect holiday Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Coachmans Cottage exceeded our expectations. It is a lovely cottage in a beautiful, quiet village. Owners, Penny and Peter, were very friendly and welcoming and the cottage was decorated and furnished to very high standards. Whilst we did not intend to do much self catering the small kitchen was fully equipped with cooker, washer/dryer, microwave, dishwasher and full range of crockery and cooking utensils. Penny had provided a welcome basket with bread, butter, milk, eggs and marmalade - a very nice touch. With televisions in the living room and main bedroom and Wi-Fi available we couldn't have asked for anything more. The Longs Arms is only 2 minutes walk away and provided very nice meals. Steeple Ashton is an ideal location for seeing the many sights of Wiltshire and I have no hesitation in recommending Coachmans Cottage.

Cosy Comfort!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to Coachmans and again was an absolute delight! Log fires, comfy beds, long walks (when the weather permitted), great local pub and village shop. The cottage is small but perfectly formed with all mod cons and Penny, Peter and Jo are delightful hosts.Nothing was too much trouble for them. Immaculately clean cottage and a great location to explore Bath and the Wiltshire countryside.

The most perfect cottage - not to be forgotten

  • 5 of 5

Our short break away was well needed and we were not disappointed. Upon arrival we were met by our wonderful hosts and you could tell immediately that we had landed upon a gem.

The cottage is quintessentially English and as picturesque as you could imagine. The interior, too, did nothing to dampen our enthusiasm. The main bedroom was a perfect size - large, well lit, with excellent storage. The spare room was also a comfortable size as too was the bathroom; immaculately clean and an added luxury of a powerful shower (not also provided in some cottages). The kitchen was of a modest size, smallish in comparison to the other rooms but more than perfect for us and I have never stayed anywhere where every culinary item was thought of. Not only that but we were left with a box filled with goodies - fresh orange juice, milk, butter, eggs AND homemade brownies! It made us feel so at home.

My husband loves tending an open fire and the magic of the sitting room was emphasised by the smell and warmth generated from a daily fire (hosts left us a generous amount of wood to get us started). Several factors of the cottage have made us want to return. The house was warm, friendly, immaculately clean and being pregnant offered me the perfect sanctuary to relax in quietness.

Steeple Ashton is a beautiful village - you almost feel lost in time; the local pub is a stone's throw away and offers delicious food and cosy evening drinking.

The surrounding area is full of stunning walks and cultural excursions depending on what you enjoy doing and there is a wealth of information left for you at the cottage. Our recommendations - Stourhead (beautiful walks around the National Trust park), Barton Country Park (lovely, flat walk along the canal), Salisbury Cathedral is stunning but our favourite place was Lacock, a village protected by the National Trust and seen in many period dramas and blockbuster films. Eating wise, you must try Sign of the Angel - great service and locally produced food prepared to a high standard at a reasonable cost.

I can't recommend this place enough and we cannot wait to return again in 2016. A home away from home. Thank you so much Penny and Peter!

Perfect English Country Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Upon our arrival at Coachman's we were greeted by our warm and friendly host, Penny. The cottage was absolutely delightful, cosy, warm and immaculate, in fact, all it 'said on the tin' and more. We found Steeple Ashton to be a welcoming, friendly village, with the dog friendly pub ( The Longs arms ) serving an excellent Sunday Lunch. The cottage is ideally situated for easily visiting many places of interest in a 'day- round' trip.( Bath being an absolute must - 15mins by train.) We definitely intend to return sooner rather than later to enjoy again the delights of this beautiful cottage set in idyllic countryside.

Peter, Cynthia and Sandy.
