Lucca is located in a strategic position to visit Tuscany, both by car and by public transport.

It is characterised by its many churches (St. Michael, St. Martin, St. Frediano ..) squares (Piazza Napoleone, Amphitheater, Piazza San Frediano ..) and its monuments, plus the surrounding countryside, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves that make it an attractive.landscape. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=84kFROr8Eq4

The most famous villas of Lucca can be reached easily by car and represent the pearl of our territory (Torrigiani villa, Villa Grabau, Villa Mansi ...).

At just twenty minutes away are the beaches of Verisilia. In addition to Viareggio, famous for its carnival, Forte dei Marmi is a Mecca for lovers of shopping and nightlife.

Those who prefer to relax and want to get away from the bustle of the city, Montecatini offers spas.

Beautiful apartment

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four traveled throughout Italy for five weeks and stayed at VRBO rentals throughout. This gorgeous apartment in Lucca was one of our most favorite spots. It was really well located right outside the city wall, which was convenient because we had a car we needed to keep close to, but could be in the city within a few minutes walking. The apartment is beautifully renovated with all of the details thought out. Everything worked perfectly, and it was immaculately clean. Renata met us on the first day and explained everything, so we did not have to worry about anything. She gave us so many suggestions of restaurants, etc in Lucca and all were great. It also included many of the ammenities that some vacation rentals don't provide. The apartment is super-chic and comfortable. Having two bathrooms was a true luxury. It is on the top floor, so be prepared to climb three flights, but this was really no big deal. I really can't say enough nice things about this great flat and the city of Lucca. If you haven't visited this charming town, definitely give it a shot.

Wonderful Apartment in Prime Location

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a wonderful week in Lucca staying at this apartment. We were greeted by Renata on our arrival, who took time to show us round the apartment, explaining carefully how everything worked and issuing us with advice on the local area, such as recommended restaurants and places to visit. She had baked a homemade cake and also brought us a bottle of wine which was produced on her own vineyard, both were very much appreciated. We were a party of three and found the apartment spacious and very clean. The apartment has 2 very large bedrooms, both with large double beds and also has room for 2 more people on a sofa bed on a minstrels gallery, this would easily be comfortable as another bedroom.

The kitchen and living room were open plan and roomy, we had all the utensils we needed and did actually eat in a couple of nights and found everything we needed. We also used the dishwasher and washing machine while we were there, both very easy to use.

The apartment location was ideal, literally across the road from the walls of the City and hence only a 5 minute walk to be within the walls of the City. We spent a few evenings in Lucca, finding very nice restaurants and bars to while away the time. The car park was only a 100 metres from the apartment, so very handy, the charge being 1 euro per hour but capped at a maximum of 5 euros for a daily rate and we always managed to find a space, whatever time of day we returned.

As a base it was ideal, we visited Florence by train, the rail station being a short 10 minute stroll from the apartment, we visited Pisa, Livorno and the local beaches by car, as well as the Outlet Village which is between Florence and Bologna.

All in all a wonderful week, a wonderful apartment and a wonderful host in Renata. I would highly recommend this apartment to anybody planning on visiting Lucca and would not hesitate in booking this apartment again. Many thanks for the hospitality offered to us.

A beautiful apartment just outside Lucca's walls

  • 5 of 5

Renata (the owner's mum) was exceptionally welcoming on our arrival, having given us directions by text from the station. She gave us a tour of the property, directions to the all the local amenities, and detailed instructions on Lucca's impressive daily refuse collection and recycling. Renata's restaurant recommendations were also spot on, and brilliantly toddler-friendly. Restaurant Gigli was wonderful.

The apartment was very clean and had everything we could need, including a cake and bottled water on our arrival. The kitchen had all the utensils we could use to make the most of the amazing local produce. The two shower-rooms were beautiful and functioned very well.

Our toddler fell in love with the metal camel on the mezzanine floor. There are a lot of very beautiful objects around the apartment, and if your toddler is particularly curious, some judicious moving to higher shelves might be advisable. The library of books on the mezzanine had something for everyone, and the tourist information and guide of Lucca were very informative.

I would absolutely recommend this apartment to others, though people with mobility issues might struggle with the two flights of stairs. We've already started planning a return trip as there is so much to do in the area and we only scratched the surface. The front bedroom can be a little noisy as it faces the main road, but despite the sirens, our toddler slept through every singe night (unheard of at home!)

Although the local bus services were recommended, we found the local train services to be very good, much cooler and less constricting for a toddler. There was a train strike on our day of return, but despite this there were still limited trains running to Pisa and we made our flight with plenty of time to spare.

Toddler-oriented highlights:

All the bike shops had childseats (don't expect helmets). The cycle around the walls is very easy and flat.

Exploring the underground Balardo S Paulo (going on a bear-hunt)

Chasing pigeons in Piazza Anfiteatro (great outdoor restaurants)

Giardino Zoologica Pistoia (pubic transport not great, last bus from the zoo is 15:17 so plan carefully)

Viareggio. Fun, sun, sea and sand. The beachfront architecture is also amazing. Don't do a Shelley and swim out to far. The private beach lifeguards won't go out further than a depth of 1.5m and will whilstle if you try to go out too far.

A lovely flat in a wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

We had liked the look of this flat beforehand and as soon as we went in the door we found it just as in the photographs - bright, spacious, well designed and also clean! Our hostess, Renata, and her husband were kind enough to collect us from the airport as it was the May day holiday and there were no buses and from then on we found her very helpful. She knows some English but when that proved a little difficult we were able to phone her daughter, Lavinia, who is fluent - the joys of mobile phones! (incidentally the WiFi in the flat seemed quick)

We loved Lucca itself and the flat was so convenient, just a few yards to the underpass, left to go through the walls into the old city, or onto the walls for a pleasant walk, or right to go into the local suburb with banks, bakeries, cafés, Esselunga supermarket and more. On our first evening we ate in Al Viale, a cafe/bar/restaurant very popular with local people. We had three meals there and enjoyed all - no pretensions just good Italian food, well prepared and served cheerfully and professionally, all at a very reasonable price.

The flat was handy for the station too so we were able to visit Florence, Montecatini, Pistoia, Pisa, Bagni di Lucca and Viareggio. Trains are cheap and the ticket machines have a good English interface.

Thoroughly recommend but the flat is on the top floor and some people might find the stairs a challenge

Excellent! You can't find anything better!

Your experience (public)

We rented this apartment for six nights just last week. This is a super place. In the 25 years plus we have been traveling throughout Europe, we have yet to receive the kind of customer service given to us in this very lovely apartment. Renata and her husband (sorry I can't remember his name), our hosts, even fed the parking meter for us so that we could visit Florence without the inconvenience of a rented car and the much needed peace of mind. From the first contact with Lavinia, Renata's daughter, through the moment we checked out we received every piece of information and quality service we needed--all of this with a great smile on their faces. They even carried our luggage up three flights of stairs. They are absolutely the nicest and loveliest people.

The apartment itself is beautiful, well appointed, and furnished with all modern conveniences. I loved the large space and all the furnishings. The bedrooms are large and the apartment has beautiful wood beams. I will definitely return to Apartment Emma and highly recommend it to all. You will not be disappointed. My only regret is not having spent enough time there.
