The Air-conditioning system has been disconnected because it has proved to be far too expensive for the tenants to run. In reality, the house is at an altitude of 850 m and therefore the nights are normally perfectly comfortable.
Having holidayed for some years in this totally unspoilt and tranquil part of Spain where water-sports, skiing, sailing, windsurfing, quad-biking, walking and relaxing played a major feature, we were able to realise our dream and buy a spacious, spectacular home which catered for our large family and friends. Time moves on, family have their own commitments and the house is no longer used as it deserves to be, so we are offering it for others to enjoy family get-togethers with room and comfort.
John Stokes purchased this villa in 2003
This beautiful house is light and airy and provides the perfect base for a holiday of activity or complete relaxation. With its space, facilities and features, it is the ultimate party house but also provides areas of shade and tranquility for the youngest, or oldest, among the guests. The area offers a glimpse of the real and unspoilt Spain and its surrounding natural beauty, wildlife and historical remains.
So close to Madrid and its cultural riches yet one hour later you are transported into a secure rural retreat with 15 km of beautiful lake. Whether enjoying breakfast on the terrace or playing Perudo around the table until the small hours of the morning, the view of the water is enchanting. Here, teenagers can roam and explore safely, be independent and the whole family can enjoy a fabulous experience.
My recent stay at El Vergel near Sacedon showed me a different side of Spain which was both beautiful and peaceful but full of things to do. It was a huge joy to be in such a special place, so unspoilt and uncrowded yet providing all the amenities and facilities for a family holiday with water-sports on your doorstep.
"El Vergel" provides six ensuite bedrooms in the main villa and a further two bedrooms in the detached bungalow. Translated into English, it means "the place full of vegetation, rich in life and water, like a huge oasis." This beautifully appointed villa has all the amenities to support the perfect holiday. It is perched high up on the side of the hill that slopes down to the lake. The surrounding countryside is lush with trees and vegetation and the large terraces have commanding views over the lake. All around the villa are beautifully tended gardens with interesting plant species as well as colourful plants and roses.
A 12 x 6 m swimming pool provides welcome respite from the sun to cool down or play games and provides relaxing areas both in sun and shade. El Vergel also has its own paddle tennis court as well as a table tennis table and a giant chess board on another terrace.
There are both outside and inside barbecue facilities: the interior situated in the well-equipped, professional bar, complete with large barrel tables and bar stools: Perfect for evening entertainment or at cooler times of the year. When I was at El Vergel, the temperature only dropped slightly at night time and we wined and dined on the terrace every night.
The large cinema enables guests to keep track with television events or enjoy a film or two and there are multiple, spacious seating areas to accommodate a house-full.
A wonderful location for the water-sport enthusiast, you could bring your own boat (6 hours drive from Bilbao) or arrange instruction/hire locally. Numerous tracks around the lake provide fascinating territory to explore by foot or bike but whether you are seeking activity or total relaxation, Embalse de Entrepenas offers a paradise on a forgotten lake. It is enchanting, romantic and also perfect for families with the security of a gated environment. If you wish to be away from the crowds and experience this special home in real Spain, I thoroughly recommend you book in at El Vergel. I will return before too long. Flights are available with many airlines to Madrid, one hour's drive away.
The owners of El Vergel could not have been more friendly or helpful! Their directions from Madrid Airport to the villa were superb and on arrival we were greeted by friends of theirs who showed us around. The views out over the lake and the mountains beyond were splendid. We all agreed that the beds were extremely comfortable. We were rarely out of the pool or off the padel tennis court, and loved both! Everything in the house functioned well, especially the wifi. We loved our time in El Vergel and will definitely consider going back.
We celebrated a very special occasion with family and friends and this house was absolutely ideal. There's so much space and room for everyone to do their own thing and not feel in any way cramped. Also the facilities are excellent.
A large veranda overlooking the trees towards the lake and hills beyond was the perfect setting under the stars for a large dinner party for 19 (which included family staying nearby). With food cooked to order by the wonderful Carmen who regularly cooks for guests at the villa we had an unforgettable evening. The house is very secluded on a private, wooded, estate in an area that is untouched by tourism - quite a rarity for Spain. A real gem of a find.
We had a fantastic week staying in a beautiful villa. There were 10 of us (5 couples) and there was more than enough space to have a relaxing and fun week. We enjoyed using the paddle tennis court and having cocktails overlooking the lake. I could not recommend this villa highly enough.
a wonderfull house with a fantastic view. The house has everything that you need and a little bit extra. We had a super holiday and can only recommend staying at El Vergel
We took our 2 teenage children and a group of their friends to El Vergel for a week, and had the most amazing time. From the moment that we walked in and the younger generation gasped a collective "OMG!", we knew we were in for a treat, and we were not wrong. The house and its facilities were fantastic. A few of the highlights were the lovely terraces to eat on while watching the sun set over the lake, the luxuriously large pool that allowed for proper swimming or mass-participation pool volley-ball, the Padel court which generated increasing levels of competitiveness as the week went on, and the beautifully maintained gardens. The house was spotlessly clean, equipped with everything that we could possibly have wanted (and more), and the arrival and check-out was relaxed and incredibly easy. We took the opportunity to have a meal prepared for us in the house on our first night, and it was the perfect start to our break. We all agreed that it was one of our best ever holidays - thank you so much for sharing your special lakeside paradise with us.
El Vergel is an ideal holiday home for a large group of people. It is very spacious and the different levels both indoors and outside add interest and also mean individuals can easily find a personal space. The marble floors, décor and furniture provide an atmosphere of luxury and everywhere is very clean and well maintained. The large kitchen is extremely well equipped and bedrooms are comfortable. Dining or relaxing in the lounge caters for all occupants and the modern furniture on the terrace also seats the whole group. We enjoyed using the cinema room and also the guest room where people could sit and use their laptops. I was pleased that the pool was all one depth and did not have a deep end. We had great fun having an aerobics session in it while others in our group simply enjoyed relaxing on the sun loungers on the lawn. The well tended garden meanders down a further level, past a wooden covered seating and dining area. The lake near the villa is part of an attractive view, although it was a little depleted during our stay due to the recent very hot weather. The sun shone during our stay but the villa remains fairly cool and it was never uncomfortable. There are restaurants within a short drive but during our visit in late June most were closed. Being only around an hour's drive from Madrid the villa is convenient for the airport and of course, a visit to the city. There are other villages within reach. The video provided by the owner gives an accurate idea of the villa and its grounds. Communication with the owner was excellent throughout and our arrival and departure were handled well. I would recommend this stylish villa for a large group of adults and families but it may be worth noting that there are quite a few steps inside and outside the villa.
Extensive Roman remains and excavations at Ercavica are worthy of a visit. Close by, the remains at Corcoles are also interesting.
Culturally, and for shopping, visit Guadalajara to view the palace, cathedral, museum and enjoy lunch at 'Amparita Roca'.
Cuenca offers 14th century 'casas colgadas' - hanging houses from the cliff, the 13C anglo-norman cathedral, a Parador, art galleries, museum, the charm of the old town lanes and is close to the 'enchanted city' of naturally-formed limestone rock sculptures.
Siguenza also boasts a serious cathedral and Renaissance town hall and castle which has been preserved and restored as a Parador whilst Brihuega is a smaller, walled town with a castle and churches. It also has two speciality shops selling unusual cheeses and 'Apicolo Moreno' with its honey and natural products and a great restuarant - 'Quinoneros'.
Smaller, attractive villages worthy of a wander are Pastrana, Horche, Buendia, Preigo, Alcocer, Alocen and El Olivar. Some of these places have roman remains, roman baths, castles, churches, 'Plaza Mayor' with the Town Hall. All will offer simple, local places for coffee, beer, wine, tapas a bocadillo (sandwich) or something more.
