Originally from NE England we lived in Kent for 20-odd years before deciding to move to France in 2004. We have been running La Basse Cour since 2005 and have created the gardens from scratch in that time.
Phil and Jude purchased this farmhouse in 2004
Being on the border of Normandy and the Pays de la Loire the summers are usually long and warm. We are surrounded by beautiful forest and countryside with many interesting places to visit - gardens, chateaux and pretty villages. Ideal for walkers, and bikers who don't mind hills!
We have poured our heart and soul into ensuring La Basse Cour with its terraces and gardens is one of the most beautiful B&Bs you could wish to stay in - and in 20-odd years of French holidays we have stayed in a lot!
A brief visit was not enough and we hope to be able to fit in a return visit shortly - maybe in spring. Philip & Judie are excellent hosts with local knowledge. Many thoughtful touches were provided like a comprehensive restaurant recommendations and a raft of practical information on the area, and brochures. Many attractions are closed out of season but that was as expected. The gardens are superb and even late in the year were a delight, with ducks and other birds on the massive pond.
My boyfriend and I spent 10 days in France in early November, splitting our time between Normandy and Paris. Our two-night stay at La Basse Cour was unquestionably a highlight. Jude and Phil were incredibly welcoming. The farmhouse is beautifully redone, with a great private space for guests upstairs. We used La Basse Cour as a basecamp for day trips elsewhere in Normandy, and would recommend it for anyone else who is looking to do the same -- centrally located for trips to Bayeux, the landing beaches, and Le Mont. We had one of the best meals of our stay in downtown Alencon at La Rue Droite, and another lovely meal at an Afghan restaurant, Le Kaboul. A great place for couples, and a great place to escape at any time of year. We look forward to returning on our next trip to France.
Ancinnes is located north of Le Mans, a perfect base for exploring Lower Normandy and north of the Pays de la Loire. 10 minutes from the A28, stop for a few nights and see a lovely region little known to the British tourist but beloved of the French. Le Mans is just 30 minutes (40km) away and for those interested in the 70th Anniversary of the Normandy Landings the Normandy Landing Beaches are 90km away.
