Overview

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 2

The Moulin is set, just outside a small village. The only noise comes from the Church bells that chime hourly. The sound of cows and sheep in the surrounding fields really emphasises the tranquillity of the area.

The Windmill is arranged over four floors, a lovely modern kitchen with granite work surface, ceramic hob, grill / microwave, fridge / freezer and a breakfast table is situated on the ground floor.

A curved wrought iron staircase leads up to the living area, furnished with two leather easy chairs and houses a wood burning stove to warm up chilly autumn or winter evenings.

The original wooden staircase rises to the second floor landing and a beautiful modern bathroom, with large shower cubicle, basin and WC. Onwards and upwards, a wrought iron staircase rises, quite sharply, to a stylish bedroom with double bed and a beautiful view.

About Sally Herbert

My name is Sally and I own this beautifully converted windmill. I live in the UK and drive trains for a living when I am not renovating old buildings!

Sally Herbert purchased this villa in 2001

Why Sally Herbert chose Saint-Cyr-des-Gâts

This property was a real challenge, it is a 19th Century windmill that, until the 1970's was used to grind flour for the local area. It is classed as a Historic Monument and therefore was very difficult to renovate.

What makes this villa unique

Just telling your friends that you are taking a holiday in a converted windmill, that is pretty unique in itself!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Came by train, lunch in Paris, spent a night in Niort. Stocked up at the wonderful market then took a hire car to the Moulin. Then we did quite a lot of nothing....... lovely. A beautiful week in a wonderful property. Merci Beaucoup...

We stayed in the beautiful windmill for 1 week - lovely place in a quiet village - plenty of places to explore - we had a car - the owner has left lots of information & leaflets - very clean - beautiful bedroom & bathroom - lovely view from the top - we generally are outside in the barbecue area - we arrived to a lovely bottle of wine - if you sit outside at night , amazing starlit sky so clear - perfect with a glass of wine and so peaceful - owner very helpful , would love to return one day - highly recommend !

PERFECT IN EVERY WAY.

  • 5 of 5

We booked a stay at this charming windmill.Never knowing what to expect I can honestly say it exceeded all our expectations.

Situated in the middle of the French countryside surrounded by farm land.

At night we would sit outside and star gaze due to zero light pollution.

The Windmill itself is well appointed with everything you would need.

As the owner explained this is a romantic retreat so no WiFi which is good because it gives you time to cut yourself off from the rat race and enjoy each other and relax.

During our stay we ventured out to La Rochelle and as far as field as St Emillion.

Where the windmill is situated you have local shops and with a little further there are many supermarkets to choose from.

We met Sally the owner on our last two days and found her very entertaining and good company.

The only regret I have about this holiday was that we booked a second week in Rennes and really wish now we had booked this week in the windmill.

We will be booking for 2017 in August for our Honeymoon and can't wait to get back.

RUINED OUR HOONYMOON

  • 1 of 5

•Rodents above our head when sleeping

Plugs and light bulbs in the windmill not working, even though the owner had been there a week before.

Rodents trying to get in the kitchen and digging through a hole that has been there for some time.

Fire alarm going off randomly

Bernini told by the owner we are lying about the rodents and we can hear"birds" in the attic!

The owner is uncooperative, rude, frequently changes her story and seems to have an answer for everthing.

Leaving after only 2 days and being told we would get a full refund but then to find out only 50% refund as the owner was charging us for cleaning and an investigation of the rodents!!

NOT THE RELAXING HONEYMOON WE PLANNED!!

Owner's Response: The clients provided no evidence of any of the issues they have stated. Saying they were awoken by a mouse scratching in the kitchen when they were 3 floors up in the bedroom, and that it waited there whilst they went to investigate...is extremely unlikely! I have owned the windmill for 15 years and I know every inch of the building, I had the property checked and there is no sign of rodents anywhere. I have experienced birds in the roof void, because it is not possible to close the space where the roof sits on the top of the meter thick walls. I have two guest books full of excellent reviews and to have this put on the HomeAway site is disappointing. I refunded 50% and have an email from Mr Jackson accepting this! I take people's comments very seriously when they are warranted and am a great believer in customer satisfaction. Sometimes people can be unhappy with their choice of holiday property and try to obtain refunds without any proof of their claims.

The Vendee

Famous for numerous gently sloping beaches which are ideal for water sports or just sunbathing. The region is also noted for the 'Venise Vert' (Green Venice) canal system, and walking around the Mervent area. For the connoisseur the Vendée is surrounded on three sides by the Loire, Cognac and Bordeaux. Inland the landscape is dominated by vineyards and sunflower fields with small villages every few miles. Ideal for a quiet holiday in the sun, the Vendée is said to equal anywhere in France for hours of sunshine each year. The climate means the season extends from Easter to late October - the average monthly temperature in September is 70 degrees.

La Rochelle is France's 2nd largest boat building area and the historic Vieux Port remains largely unchanged. A daily fish market can be found in the old town until 12:00 midday. The port is very attractive and waterside cafés and restaurants offer a relaxing break. The seafood platters are their speciality and are excellent. The new marina holds Europe's largest aquarium which is open 365 days a year and has a large selection of fish from highly coloured tropical types to eels and sharks. Well worth a visit at approximately £4 per person.

Vouvant is a quiet historic town with a church overlooking a valley and river. There is a very good crêperie and pedalos can be hired out by the hour.

Mervent is only a short drive ride from St Cyr Des Gats, it has a dam and a large reservoir. The area has been developed with tourism in mind. There are large wooded areas ideal for walking and particularly mountain biking. There are places where pedalos and wind surfers can be hired, and wind surfing lessons are offered at reasonable rates.
