Romantic Getaway ~ 1930s Stone Cottage In Connecticut!

People4
Bedrooms 2
Bathrooms1
Space 1,000 sq ft
Property type guest house
Minimum Stay 1 - 2 nights

Overview

About the property

Historic Guest House from the early 1930s made entirely of stone.

The Windy Top Cottage is an old stone building constructed in 1932 by H. L. Bitter, a wealthy Hartford businessman. This area of Granby was a favorite of the Hartford elite for a place to “summer” in the early part of the 20th Century. The cottage was the place where the domestic staff stayed when the family was staying in North Granby. With an elevation of 970, the home once had views of Hartford. Today after lots of trees grew, views are still just a minute away and the cool breezes remain!

Dawn and Ken have refreshed the interior with newly sanded "pumpkin pine" floors and warm, decorator wall tones. There is over 1000 of living space. The bath fixtures are original from the 30s and the huge stone fireplace has propane fired gas logs for cozy winter nights. The large first-floor great room also has a small coffee service with a 1935 Frigidaire refrigerator filled with cold drinks.

The second-floor bedrooms are spacious and yet very cozy. The home has an English Country House feel with all furnishings provided by Dawn’s painted furniture business: A Girl With A Paintbrush. Flower boxes adorn several windows that overlook an herb and flower garden. The property is accessed by original brick walkways and lead to the private entry door.

Guests will be able to use the entire building with the exception of the garage bays for their private use. A private exterior patio is located out the back door with old motel chairs, benches, and a firepit.

Amenities include freshly laundered soft cotton bedding and towels, bathrobes, hypoallergenic or goose down pillows, cozy sofas, and chairs, comfortable carpeting, and rugs. The linen closet has an ample supply of bar soaps, shampoos, a hair dryer and a first aid box.

The spaces are accessorized with old framed artwork, mirrors, clocks and folk art. We offer a quiet, relaxing experience without TV, with old books, old magazines, and games to enjoy a special time with friends or loved ones. Excellent wireless service to keep tabs on the world if you need to.

The coffee service provides a toaster oven, an espresso machine, a French press and a Keurig single cup coffee maker with fresh cream and organic sugar.

Our goal is to greet you and then leave you to enjoy the cottage and all the surrounding amenities and beauty at your leisure. We live in the main house so we are always available by text or cell phone.

The beds are a king sized and a standard full sized. The south bedroom offers an antique double. We provide a complete list of emergency info in the unlikely event that you would need it.

The exterior patio out the rear door is covered by an awning and has solar twinkle lights. The firepit makes great campfires for grilling hot dogs and making S'Mores.

Located in an area with breathtaking views of Massachusetts (walk just a little more than a half mile to the amazing Mary Edwards Property), this area Connecticut is known for its working dairy farms, apple orchards, farm wineries and is a horse loving community. Our beautiful community also offers self-serve farm stands, homemade ice cream stores, country libraries as well as upscale evening dining and art galleries. We include a local guide book for your convenience.

Book this 2 bedroom cottage in North Granby today! A total of 4 people can sleep here comfortably.

Guests can enjoy air conditioning, parking space, and internet access among other amenities offered by this rental.

About Ken Kuhl

Dawn and I are an "empty nest" couple with a love for hospitality. We currently own an older Cape Cod home in North Granby, Connecticut. The property includes our stone guest house with 2 bedrooms, a bath and a living room with a massive stone fireplace. Dawn has a furniture restoration business and Ken has been in real estate sales for over 40 years. We love country antiques and decorating with a vintage style. Ken is involved with the local historical society and has served on the town Economic Development Commission for over 10 years. Please see our Guidebook for many ideas of what you can do when you stay with us.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My wife and I loved hosting Jennifer. she was a delight! She was respectful of the cottage and left it in beautiful condition. We appreciated her "exploring" our beautiful town and the lovely things she said about it and our people. She also sent us a breathtaking image of Enders waterfalls...Would love to host her again.

Beautiful quaint cottage

I fell in love with the Windy Top Cottage the minute I saw it listed. Upon arrival I realized how no pictures could ever convey the magic it holds. Ken and Dawn have created such a special place here. I never want to leave

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at this one of kind cottage. Every corner of this dwelling contained exquisitely beautiful detail and no potential need was over looked.

Dawn and Ken went above and beyond to ensure that we felt welcomed and cared for. Thank you for a great HomeAway experience.

WOW! Unexpected little gem here

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful and charming little cozy place Ken and Dawn have created here! So unexpected. The charm and character that this little place boast is beyond words. The host have thought of everything, from bathroom necessities to munchies near the fire, this place is by far one of the best get a ways we have had.

The personal touches made the place so homey... tons of old books to browse, a lovely fireplace to relax next too, and more than the comforts of your own home with soft warm bedding and lots of pillows.

The cottage was refreshingly clean... and the fridge was well stocked with juice and water.

Quiet and unobstrusive were the host, and surprised us in the morning with a beautiful breakfast tray of juice, muffins and fruit.

This is a MUST GO TO place. If you are looking for the hustle and bustle of the city and loud noises and TV.. this is not a place for you, BUT, if you are looking for a place to relax, unwind, and enjoy hospitality and country charm.. I highly recommend Windy Top Cottage.

We will be going back again.

Is there such a thing as perfection?

  • 5 of 5

The world needs more places like this. A gentle refuge an adult cradle, a place to forget everything that pulls and tugs, interferes. A place where every single nook and cranny has been loved, and that love beams back at you and says, “it’s all okay, just kick back, relax and enjoy! Get some rest”

The world needs more people like the amazing couple who have created this. They have infused this place in peace and loveliness. They have thought of every possible need you have thought of, and a hundred more you didn’t think of. Didn’t know you needed a candy counter did you, with an array of candies in beautiful antique glass jars. Or coffee in every form, cocoa, tea, fresh cream, cereal, honey, bottled water.

A guide book that seriously needs to be printed for the entire area!

The instructions for the house have been lovingly typed in an antique font and pasted inside the cover of an old book.

Ken and Dawn have skipped no steps. Her beautiful painted furniture is everywhere. Delightful antiques that have clearly been collected with a loving eye. The little bits, the collection of antique prints everywhere, perfect upholstery, delightful linens. Truly lovely.

Heavenly bedrooms. My daughter doesn’t want to leave. I don’t want to leave. Do we have to leave??

Look at the pictures. The rooms are even better!

“Forget anything”, says the little sign in the bathroom, Because if you did, it is there. Toothpaste, hairspray, floss, toothbrushes, lotion, a sewing kit, bandaids, makeup remover.

The care that has gone into this cottage is astounding. Stay here.

It will restore your faith in humanity.

Terry (San Francisco)
