Overview

About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Queens, 1 Futon, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 1-5)

The Kaweah Cottage and Shangrila Nature Preserve are cherished by travelers who want an exceptionally clean and comfortable home that is just steps away from a secluded and magnificent section of the Kaweah River. Surrounded by thousands of acres of remote oak woodlands, tranquil horse pastures and ancient river pools, this historic homestead property offers a place of sanctuary, rejuvenation and enjoyment for lovers of Nature who yearn for a real getaway.*

It is best suited for independent travelers who love vacationing in a wilderness area while settled into a luxurious, healthy, green-built home that they have all to themselves; who appreciate high quality bedding, fine craftsmanship, and who take pleasure in preparing their own meals in a truly gourmet kitchen.

Whether you are a writer or an artist wanting to nurture your creativity, a couple seeking precious time together, or a family with children** looking to explore Nature and discover nearby Sequoia National Park -- Kaweah Cottage is an ideal place.

We’re located at the end of an unpaved country road on the upper South Fork of the Kaweah River -- far away from cities, suburbs and the usual routines -- fifteen minutes from the town of Three Rivers and twenty-five minutes from the main entrance to Sequoia National Park. This is a memorable destination where one can really escape, slow down, and sink into the peace and beauty.

Although the Cottage is equipped with the essential technologies that most of us need to stay connected -- satellite wi-fi, 40” LED video/DVD player, and a fine sound system -- we encourage our guests to spend most of their time unplugged, enjoying the sounds from the adjacent Creek, tuning in to the symphony of wildlife, and savoring the down canyon breezes wafting through the oaks. Being here will change the way you feel.

Here are a few of the favorite features and activities:

Year-round relaxing along the spectacular and secluded river and creek; enjoying the swimming holes and waterslides 3 minute hike from the Cottage; exploring the 62 acre Shangrila Nature Preserve; birdwatching; full day excursions up to the Giant Sequoias; an impeccably clean home with fine bedding, sheets, and towels; a fully equipped gourmet kitchen; amazingly comfortable bathtub and spacious shower; an 88 key professional digital piano; breathtaking night skies; watching horses graze from the bedroom view deck; exceptional privacy -- turn the music up... whenever you want; a clean, comfortable, natural place that becomes your home away from home.

Please review our VRBO slideshow. ALL photos were taken HERE on the property at different times of the year. Also, contact us if you have any questions about our rates and terms.

* We respect and celebrate people of all nationalities, colors, faiths, cultures, gender identities, sexual preferences and ages. People of all backgrounds are welcome to book the Kaweah Cottage.

** Although children are welcome at the Kaweah Cottage, it is not a child proof home. There are antiques, oriental rugs, lamps, artworks, a digital piano, crafts, fragile furnishings and kitchenwares in the Cottage.

We are in a wilderness area and near running water. The River is wild and has currents and unknown objects beneath the surface. The flow and profile of the River changes throughout the year. We consider it very hazardous for non-swimmers and beginning swimmers. Although there are some areas with calmer pools, it can still be quite stressful to supervise young children when near the River. The simple act of getting in and out of the River can be challenging due to uneven and very slippery surfaces everywhere. Children who are not yet able to swim or are beginners must be carefully supervised by an adult swimmer at all times whenever they are near the River or the Creek. Please consider whether it is appropriate for your entire family, especially during the swim season.

FAQs

1. How far are you from the Park?

A lot of people will say they are 'only' 5 minutes or 20 minutes from the Park. What they usually do not tell you is that once you arrive at the Park entrance it is still another forty to sixty minutes drive to the Big Trees and several of the other great attractions. There are also wonderful things to see in the lower part of the Park but most people are dazzled by the Big Trees and adjoining highlights. It is a 25 minute scenic drive from the Kaweah Cottage to both the main entrance and the South Fork entrances to the Park.

2. How close are you to the River?

The entire 62 acre property is located along the South Fork of the Kaweah River. It is a three minute hike from the Cottage to the Big Smooth Rock. It is a beautiful spot year round, regardless of the water flows.

3. How is the swimming and the waterslides?

It totally depends on the time of the year, the weather, and the high country snowpack. Please ask us about the current or predicted levels for the time of your stay and we will do our best to give you an accurate forecast. We can also recommend some great swimming holes in Sequoia National Park.

This year swimming and waterslides at our place will begin around July 1 and possibly run all the way into late August.

4. Where can we shop for food, dine out?

There are a couple decent places to dine in the nearby town of Three Rivers: Sierra Subs, the Buckaroo Diner. There is a small Village Market for foods/beverages and Sage Roots for fresh fruits and vegetables. We recommend you plan ahead and make use of the superb Kaweah Cottage kitchen.

5. Kaweah?

'Kaweah' pronounced 'kah-wee-uh' from the Wukchumni language meaning 'Call of the Raven'.

6. We respect and celebrate people of all nationalities, colors, faiths, cultures, gender identities, sexual preferences and ages. People of all backgrounds are welcome to book the Kaweah Cottage.

About Kathleen & James

Kathleen & James and their daughter Julianna reside in the Old Homestead, near the Kaweah Cottage. Also living on the land are 'Dalila' the friendly German Boxer; 'Lucky' the elusive Norwegian Forest Cat; 'Boddhi' the adventurous orange tom; 'Babu' the mischievous tabbie; 'Georgie' a furry calico; 'Kachina' a chestnut Quarter Horse mare; 'Comanche' a Paint Quarterhorse gelding; a grand rooster; several hens; and innumerable Wild Animals.

Kathleen & James purchased this cottage in 1987

Why Kathleen & James chose Gold Country / High Sierra

Kathleen’s family settled in the region in the 1870’s and she has been spending Summers on the South Fork since her early youth. James has been hiking in Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Park since the 1970’s and has a lifelong passion for the Sierras.

When it came time to relocate from Los Angeles to dwell and raise our daughter, the only place on Earth that we considered was along the Upper South Fork of the Kaweah River. We purchased the historic Old Homestead in 1987 and built the Kaweah Cottage in 2006 as a second home on our secluded 62 acre private Nature Preserve. It is designed for lifetimes of comfort and pleasure and as a sanctuary for family, friends and travelers.

What makes this cottage unique

Off the beaten track: the big smooth rock, secluded swimming holes, natural waterslides (seasonal), private 62 acre Nature Preserve, seasonal Creek. Unparalleled seclusion and wildness.

Stay here all day or visit the Big Trees and return home at the end of the day for a refreshing swim in the River or relaxation on the view deck overlooking the Creek and horse pastures.

In addition to being green-built the Kaweah Cottage is exceptionally comfortable and kept immaculately clean. Although it is surrounded by wilderness it has all of the amenities that a discerning person would want. The Cottage is complemented by a fully equipped gourmet chef's kitchen, an elegant bathroom, and high quality bedding and sheets. The surrounding property is bordered by 1800 feet of beautiful river frontage. Horse pastures, a seasonal creek and blue oak woodlands are just outside your bedroom doors. We invite you to make yourself at home. Be in Nature, Live in Comfort.

I loved this place. My wife loved this place.

It was a beautiful house. Very peaceful and relaxing. The attention to even the smallest details were not overlooked.

But there is nothing that beats waking up in the morning and walking outside. This is a spectacular place! The natural beauty is unsurpassed.

I particularly enjoyed walking across the fields, passing the horses on the way and finding my way to the river. The river is magical. It is filled with enormous boulders that Native Americans had over the centuries used to grind grain and created smooth grinding holes in these huge stone boulders. You not only notice these archaeological relics from centuries past, but you can feel the spirit.... This place is a must visit. I have traveled the world, yet this place has a very special vibe that speaks to ones spirit.

I cannot recommend this cottage highly enough. It is a must for anyone seeking a peaceful yet majestic get away.

Peaceful, scenic...perfect for our family!

  • 5 of 5

The hosts were incredible! My husband, three little boys and I stayed there on a two week road trip for 3 nights. It is close to Sequoia so we could make a few trips to the park easily. There was also a lot to do at the cabin. The boys absolutely loved it. Their favorite part of our two week trip was playing in the creek on the homestead. We will be back someday!

Wonderful place and wonderful people

  • 5 of 5

The house and grounds were beautiful. It was remote, but that was what we were looking for. We were unable to play in the river because it was running too high and therefore dangerous. If that is what you want you may want to adventure up there later in the summer. The upside of that was that due to all the run off this year the creek was high and lovely. We sat around the creek with a few beers and waded in the water it was a magical day. The trip to the park was only about 20 minutes to the park gate, but of course much longer to the top. The hosts were lovely people. They were very friendly and helpful. I will definitely be back in the future.

A Glimpse Of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

How should I begin describing the experience that I had at this property? Words can only go so far as to portray what courses through the heart, what glazes over the eyes. It is fair to start by mentioning that the hosts, James and Kathleen, are some of the most welcoming, caring people that you will ever come across. They created an atmosphere that was comforting, genuine and homely - I came to feel as though I had known them in another life. I immediately came to realize that they care about the well-being and peace of mind of visitors. Not only that, but it is also their desire to share this fragment of heaven in its fullness with the rest of the world.

This brings us to the rental property itself. A great day starts with a good night sleep, and the beds at this household do not fall short of expectations. Not only do they look as soft as to be a portal to your best dreams, but as my friend mentioned after the first night, "I feel like I slept among the clouds." Upon daybreak, we were fittingly greeted by actual clouds drifting leisurely across the side of the mountains - a surreal view as we ate breakfast at the deck. We actually found ourselves wanting to eat upon the deck as often as we could, regardless of the temperature of late November nights. In fact, nighttime brought a whole other level of beauty to the property. As the light surrendered to the darkness, the sky was enveloped in a blanket of a million stars. We had the pleasure of witnessing the wind cascade over the mountains and into the valleys, lightly crashing upon the deck as waves upon a shore. The soft caress of this crisp mountain breeze, the murmurs of the gales that came upon the night, the accompanying silence...it all made for a memorable, and uniquely beautiful experience.

As a last note, I am very grateful and appreciative for the mentioned care of the hosts. We had a rough patch of winter weather at the mountain of Sequoias during our stay, and they took it upon themselves to provide as much concern and support as a family would. Thank you James, and thank you Kathleen. It was an experience to remember!

An extraordinary and magical retreat in Three Rivers, near Sequoia Forest

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a wonderful visit to Three Rivers. Kathleen and her family were warm and welcoming and shared their gorgeous property where our children loved exploring, seeing farm animals, garden and fruit trees, and swimming in their private water hole. We saw millions of stars and enjoyed such natural beauty and peace surrounded by the mountains. The cabin was spotless, tasteful, eclectic and confortable with all possible amenities and views from every window. We were conveniently close to the Sequoia National Forest to take day hikes to the great trees. An absolute pleasure and joy-- our many thanks for a fantastic visit!

Classy, Clean and Comfy!

  • 5 of 5

Wow, what a house. From the first class kitchen to the quiet surroundings to the relaxation. We really enjoyed our stay. James and Kathleen were very friendly and since we missed our own dogs, it was nice to have the occasional visit from Delilah, their Boxer. It's a short, relaxing 6 mile ride to the main road but it is a beautiful ride. We never felt in a hurry so the drive was fine and we noticed something new each time we drove it. Once we even saw a black bear! The sound of the horses in the evening was very relaxing and what a glow from the hills off the deck just after sunset! We highly recommend this house if you're interested in getting away from it all. No T.V. so bring some music, movies or good conversation. Awesome.

IF YOU ARE READING THIS, LUCKY YOU ARE INDEED.

  • 5 of 5

I'm at not one to just hand over a secret spot, so this is difficult for me. I think everyone should have to do their own do diligence to find such amazing places as this, like I did. I have had this place saved on my phone for the last 6 years before I was finally able to go. So on that note, this destination, this cottage is going to be the most incredible place you are ever going to find. That is if you like nature, seclusion, quite, and really good people. Go experience this place, you will not be disappointed. You will look at things differently when you are done.

James, thank you for being so kind to my boys and my wife; for showing us the sequoia log (my favorite part of the trip) and how to get around the property. The cottage was perfect; great library, really enjoyed reading about the 1867 flood that put that sequoia on those rocks, like it was meant to be. Incredible! I'm jealous.

I look forward to coming out again soon.
