About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Queens, 1 Futon, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 1-5)

The Kaweah Cottage and Shangrila Nature Preserve are cherished by travelers who want an exceptionally clean and comfortable home that is just steps away from a secluded and magnificent section of the Kaweah River. Surrounded by thousands of acres of remote oak woodlands, tranquil horse pastures and ancient river pools, this historic homestead property offers a place of sanctuary, rejuvenation and enjoyment for lovers of Nature who yearn for a real getaway.*

It is best suited for independent travelers who love vacationing in a wilderness area while settled into a luxurious, healthy, green-built home that they have all to themselves; who appreciate high quality bedding, fine craftsmanship, and who take pleasure in preparing their own meals in a truly gourmet kitchen.

Whether you are a writer or an artist wanting to nurture your creativity, a couple seeking precious time together, or a family with children** looking to explore Nature and discover nearby Sequoia National Park -- Kaweah Cottage is an ideal place.

We’re located at the end of an unpaved country road on the upper South Fork of the Kaweah River -- far away from cities, suburbs and the usual routines -- fifteen minutes from the town of Three Rivers and twenty-five minutes from the main entrance to Sequoia National Park. This is a memorable destination where one can really escape, slow down, and sink into the peace and beauty.

Although the Cottage is equipped with the essential technologies that most of us need to stay connected -- satellite wi-fi, 40” LED video/DVD player, and a fine sound system -- we encourage our guests to spend most of their time unplugged, enjoying the sounds from the adjacent wilderness, tuning in to the wildlife, and savoring the down canyon breezes wafting through the oaks. Being here will change the way you feel.

Here are a few of the favorite features and activities:

Year-round relaxing along the spectacular and secluded river and creek; enjoying the swimming holes and waterslides 3 minute hike from the Cottage; birdwatching; full day excursions up to the Giant Sequoias; an impeccably clean home with fine bedding, sheets, and towels; a fully equipped gourmet kitchen; amazingly comfortable bathtub and spacious shower; an 88 key professional digital piano; breathtaking night skies; watching horses graze from the bedroom view deck; exceptional privacy -- turn the music up... whenever you want; a clean, comfortable, natural place that becomes your home away from home.

Please review our VRBO slideshow. ALL photos were taken HERE on the property at different times of the year. * We respect and celebrate people of all nationalities, colors, faiths, cultures, gender identities, sexual preferences and ages. People of all backgrounds are welcome to book the Kaweah Cottage.

** Although children are welcome at the Kaweah Cottage, it is not a child proof home. There are antiques, oriental rugs, lamps, artworks, a digital piano, crafts, fragile furnishings and kitchenwares in the Cottage.

We are in a wilderness area and near running water. The River is wild and has currents and unknown objects beneath the surface. The flow and profile of the River changes throughout the year. We consider it hazardous for non-swimmers and beginning swimmers. The simple act of getting in and out of the River can be challenging due to uneven and very slippery surfaces everywhere. Children who are not yet able to swim or are beginners must be carefully supervised by an adult swimmer at all times whenever they are near the River or the Creek. Please consider whether it is appropriate for your entire family, especially during the swim season.

1. How far are you from the Park?

A lot of people will say they are 'only' 5 minutes or 20 minutes from the Park. What they usually do not tell you is that once you arrive at the Park entrance it is still another forty to sixty minutes drive to the Big Trees and several of the other great attractions. There are also wonderful things to see in the lower part of the Park but most people are dazzled by the Big Trees and adjoining highlights. It is a 25 minute scenic drive from the Kaweah Cottage to both the main entrance and the South Fork entrances to the Park.

2. How close are you to the River?

The entire 62 acre property is located along the South Fork of the Kaweah River. It is a three minute hike from the Cottage to the Big Smooth Rock. It is a beautiful spot year round, regardless of the water flows.

3. How is the swimming and the waterslides?

It totally depends on the time of the year, the weather, and the high country snowpack. Please ask us about the current or predicted levels for the time of your stay and we will do our best to give you an accurate forecast. We can also recommend some great swimming holes in Sequoia National Park.

This year swimming and waterslides at our place will begin around July 1 and possibly run all the way into late August.

4. Where can we shop for food, dine out?

There are a couple decent places to dine in the nearby town of Three Rivers: Sierra Subs, the Buckaroo Diner. There is a small Village Market for foods/beverages and Sage Roots for fresh fruits and vegetables. We recommend you plan ahead and make use of the superb Kaweah Cottage kitchen.

5. Kaweah?

'Kaweah' pronounced 'kah-wee-uh' from the Wukchumni language meaning 'Call of the Raven'.

About Kathleen, Julianna & Mathias

Kathleen, her daughter Julianna and son in-law Mathias, reside in the Old Homestead, near the Kaweah Cottage. Also living on the land are 'Dalila' the friendly German Boxer; 'Lucky' the elusive Norwegian Forest Cat; 'Boddhi' the adventurous orange tom; 'Babu' the mischievous tabbie; 'Georgie' a furry calico; 'Kachina' a chestnut Quarter Horse mare; 'Comanche' a Paint Quarterhorse gelding; a grand rooster; several hens; and innumerable Wild Animals.

Kathleen, Julianna & Mathias purchased this cottage in 1987

Why Kathleen, Julianna & Mathias chose Three Rivers

Kathleen’s family settled in the region in the 1870’s and she has been spending Summers on the South Fork since her early youth. Julianna grew up here and Mathias has been hiking and working in Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Park since 2006 and has a lifelong passion for the Sierras.

When it came time to relocate from Los Angeles to dwell and raise our daughter, the only place on Earth that we considered was along the Upper South Fork of the Kaweah River. We purchased the historic Old Homestead in 1987 and built the Kaweah Cottage in 2006 as a second home on our secluded 62 acre private Nature Preserve. It is designed for lifetimes of comfort and pleasure and as a sanctuary for family, friends and travelers.

What makes this cottage unique

Off the beaten track: the big smooth rock, secluded swimming holes, natural waterslides (seasonal), seasonal Creek. Unparalleled seclusion and wildness.

Stay here all day or visit the Big Trees and return home at the end of the day for a refreshing swim in the River or relaxation on the view deck overlooking the Creek and horse pastures.

In addition to being green-built the Kaweah Cottage is exceptionally comfortable and kept immaculately clean. Although it is surrounded by wilderness it has all of the amenities that a discerning person would want. The Cottage is complemented by a fully equipped gourmet chef's kitchen, an elegant bathroom, and high quality bedding and sheets. The surrounding property is bordered by 1800 feet of beautiful river frontage. Horse pastures, a seasonal creek and blue oak woodlands are just outside your bedroom doors. We invite you to make yourself at home. Be in Nature, Live in Comfort.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I loved this place. My wife loved this place.

It was a beautiful house. Very peaceful and relaxing. The attention to even the smallest details were not overlooked.

But there is nothing that beats waking up in the morning and walking outside. This is a spectacular place! The natural beauty is unsurpassed.

I particularly enjoyed walking across the fields, passing the horses on the way and finding my way to the river. The river is magical. It is filled with enormous boulders that Native Americans had over the centuries used to grind grain and created smooth grinding holes in these huge stone boulders. You not only notice these archaeological relics from centuries past, but you can feel the spirit.... This place is a must visit. I have traveled the world, yet this place has a very special vibe that speaks to ones spirit.

I cannot recommend this cottage highly enough. It is a must for anyone seeking a peaceful yet majestic get away.

Magical oasis

  • 5 of 5

This was the best summer vacation we have had in years. We loved sitting on the deck taking in the sights, sounds and smells of all the flora and fauna on the property. Our daughters enjoyed daily visits from Delilah the boxer and several friendly cats each day. We swam in the river every day (our daughters found wearing water shoes helpful) As a family, we enjoyed our time here so much that we didn't really feel the need to explore beyond the property too much except for one day in to Sequoia National Park, but there is a lot to see and do in the area if one is so inclined. Kathleen and Julianna were very welcoming and knowledgeable hosts. My only regret is that we did not start staying at Kaweah cottage sooner!

Incredible visit to a unique place

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I took our 11 year old granddaughter and 9 year old grandson to Kaweah Cottage for a brief vacation. The children live in Torrance, CA. Their world is full of traffic and schedules. This was the perfect opposite. The river proved to be at the very perfect level for water sliding, swimming and tubing. They had a blast! Kathleen, Julianna and Mathias made us feel totally safe and at home on the 62 acre nature preserve. The “cottage” is a beautiful, well appointed home we enjoyed to the fullest. The deck overlooking the valley was especially wonderful for breakfast and late evening wine down for us old folks. Thank you for sharing Shangri-la. We will never forget.....

Perfect vacation

  • 5 of 5

Just home from an amazingly perfect get away to this beautiful place! Kathleen made us feel immediately at home upon arriving (as did doggy Delilah) and we were awed by the property and the beautiful views. A great place to relax and unwind and enjoy nature...spent a full day hiking Sequoia one day, hiked Ladybug trail closer to the property on another, had a blast on a river rafting trip on Kathleen's suggestion and thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful river by the cottage and star gazing in the evenings. We will return!

A Magical Home Away from Home

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed here over our Spring Break in late March. We spent each day at the national parks, which were gorgeous, but our favorite part of each day was coming back to this property. Our kids - 13, 11 and 9 - LOVED exploring the many acres, especially when Delila would tag along too. The river and creek waters were high, which was lovely. We only wish the weather was warm enough to experience the rock slides! That only means we'll have to come back someday. Kathleen was a sweet and gracious host and EXTREMELY accommodating. We miss her and this beautiful property :)

No better place in the area!

  • 5 of 5

I believe this is the most lovely experience in California.

Totally private property from all the tourists visiting Sequoia Nat'l Park.

A lovely dog.

Fresh eggs from the chickens.

Stunning scenery everywhere you look.

Kind owners.

A great cd collection and well stocked kitchen.

I need to get back ASAP!

Beautiful and Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

Kathleen and James have an amazing property and they are so kind about sharing all of its history and beauty. We had a fabulous time meeting the animals, exploring the river, and relaxing in the comfortable cottage. Kathleen was wonderful about introducing the horses and chickens to our kids, and showing us around. The river was low, so it was perfect for playing. Our youngest (4 years old) was okay playing around the river at that level, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for small kids if it were much higher. The area is gorgeous, and the quiet fall time was great for visiting Sequoia. No crowds! I highly recommend this property. We were sad to leave.
