PRIVATE STRUCTURE. On the tip of the promontory of Castelmola, overlooking Mount Etna and eastern Sicily with its old cities, its natural beauty and the crystal-clear blue sea of the splendid Sicilian coast, very close to Taormina and surrounded by a green, luxuriant park of 20 hectares with more than 6000 species of plants, stands the Antica Dimora Grimaudo (old Grimaudo residence), a villa which still breathes the atmosphere of past splendours and which, today, is provided with all mod cons. The villa consists of a large portico where you can enjoy meals in the open air, sipping the best wines of the area, and with lots of space to relax, listening to the sounds of nature or admiring unforgettable sunsets. The swimming pool, just a few paces from the house, is perfect for those wanting to swim or to soak up the sun while reading a good book by the pool. The strategic position of the house allows you to get to beautiful Taormina or to the famous beaches of the Giardini Naxos in about 10/15 minutes.


The house is on one level and the rooms are furnished with period furniture of the highest quality, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The entrance from the portico leads into a tastefully decorated living room with working fireplace, connected to the built-in, fitted kitchen. The sleeping area is separated from the living area by a corridor with 2 steps which leads to the main bathroom with a large shower and to two spacious and bright double bedrooms, one with en-suite bathroom with shower. Both rooms have a private veranda.


The immense park, crossed by paths perfect for going for long walks, surrounded by nature, where you can admire more than 6000 different species of plants such as centuries-old olive trees, cypresses, oaks, sorb trees, mimosas and eucalyptus and sit on the many benches placed along the paths and admire the unique panorama. Walking in the park, the views change from that of Mount Etna to that of the beautiful Taormina coast.

Swimming Pool

The beautiful rectangular swimming pool, measuring 10 x 7 m, with a depth of 1,40 m and lined in PVC, is about 30 m from the house, on a higher level, and is reached along two flights of steps. Entrance to the water is by ladder and it has chlorine purification. On the hottest days you can cool off in the water or soak up the sun in the exclusive tranquillity of this home. In addition, the pool has a large solarium area, paved on one side and with lawn on the other, with sunbeds for relaxing or reading a good book. The pool is equipped with lighting both internally and externally and is open from the first Saturday in May until the last Saturday of September.

This should have been a 5 star but failed miserably on important points

I found this villa on VRBO and the contact was Emma Villas, a management company. Because my husband and I were traveling with another couple, I was very concerned about privacy and questioned Emma Villas in several emails about the privacy in the villa for two couples. In addition, since my husband and I had to stay connected to business, I also questioned Emma Villas about the internet connection, though the Villa was advertised as having Wifi. I was assured that the villa was the right selection for two couples and that Wifi was available. It was only when we arrived that we discovered that one of the two bedrooms had no door and that Wifi was really a mobile connection which plain and simple did not work. The lack of a door was partially corrected by the owners who hung a curtain, which provided some sight blockage but nothing for sound or light. There was not even a partial solution for the lack of Wifi. In addition, the villa is accessed via a steep, narrow and windy mountain road, largely dirt and gravel, with no guard rails, so going into town to use internet hot spots was something we only did once a day, and only during daylight hours. Yes, the villa is kept nicely, the grounds are beautiful and the view is spectacular; but had we been advised of the lack of privacy and the lack of Wifi, we would not have chosen this accommodation. We were told by the owners as we left that they were going to build a door for the one bedroom (the bedrooms face each other) and that the area was putting in a new internet system, but that will not erase the inconveniences, discomfort and problems we encountered as neither solution was available for our stay. Emma Villas was notified of our issues from the first day of our arrival, and have done nothing to make us feel that we were valued rentals guests. They have now stopped communicating with me. Guess their motto is take the money and walk away from the issues. The owners did attempt to make us feel welcome and they were nice people, but the issues were serious ones for us and their solution on the missing door was not adequate. There was nothing they could offer us regarding the lack of Wifi. It's a shame as there was so much to like about the villa, but honesty was the key here and we did not find it with the management company.

The old residence of Grimaudo is situated in a strategic position for those wishing to combine hill and sea. In fact, you can visit all the villages at the foot of Mount Etna in about half an hour by car or make an excursion on the famous volcano itself, perhaps stopping on the way at Bronte to taste the famous pistachio, or spend days on the nearby beaches of the Giardini Naxos (9 km) or Letojanni (14 km), and in the evening you can stroll through the typical streets of Taormina (9 km). In addition, just over 50 km away, you can visit Aci Trezza, the town in the province of Catania where the famous author, Giovanni Verga, used to live.
