Come to the Garden Hideaway at Lotus Farm. Experience the Hawaii most tourists never see. This soulful, laid-back slice of paradise is set among three lush and lovingly maintained acres on a mature, established organic tropical fruit farm and palm nursery. We are only a five minute drive from several secluded, pristine beaches and rivers.
We are excited to announce that we have officially been granted a permit (Z-IV-2015-32) by the County of Kauai to hosts guests at our Garden Hideaway here at our farm and nursery. We have recently finished renovations and the Hideaway photos are current and up to date.
The Hideaway was created with your every comfort in mind. Your home away from home is tucked away down its own private drive and enclosed in a serene, tropical Asian style courtyard. A comfortable outdoor lounging lanai, under a pergola of tropical vines, looks out over the peaceful meditation garden. The open floor plan and high pinewood ceiling create a sense of spaciousness in the light, airy, uncluttered and tastefully done 500 sq. ft. one room cottage with dining, living and sleeping areas.
Our guests rave about the enclosed outdoor shower and bath area that is directly off the indoor 1/2 bath. The cottage is done in shades of apricot, beige, gold and green and decorated with Hawaiian art prints and furnished in bamboo, wicker and rattan. The comfortable king size bed is covered in good quality linens. Plush robes are also provided.
The Hideaway comes stocked with goods for a light breakfast. We provide freshly roasted, organic, hand picked Kona coffee beans with coffee grinder and coffee maker, an assortment of teas, sweeteners, whatever types of milk you desire along with organic yogurt, granola, macadamia nuts and fresh fruits in season. Fresh, homemade beverages such as coconut water, ginger lemonade, macadamia nut milk, tangelo and orange juice are also available at your request.
The kitchenette area has a refrigerator to store your snacks and takeaway food as well as a bar size sink. Our Home Stay permit does not allow us to provide a hot plate, microwave or toaster oven for cooking. Guests are welcome to use the Weber Grill in the Hideaway's covered BBQ area just beyond the enclosed garden gate. We provide knives and cutting board, blender, juicer, glasses, dinnerware and silverware for your use. There is a clothes washer and dryer inside the cottage.
The cottage comes stocked with yoga mats, beach towels, beach blanket, beach chairs, boogie boards, mask and snorkels, beach umbrella, picnic cooler and shopping bags for your excursions.
Our central location is ideal. We are just 50 minutes from the Lihue airport and 35 minutes from the end of the road in Haena, making anywhere on the island an easy half day excursion. The small local flavored town of Kilauea is only five minutes from the Hideaway. There you will find a great bakery, shops, restaurants, yoga studio, pharmacy, post office, gas station and other conveniences. We are longtime Kauai residents who are happy to share our favorite spots with you as well as setting up special requests such as in house massage and other holistic health treatments.
We established our working farm nearly 35 years ago. Lotus Farm and Nursery was one of the first organic farms on Kauai. You'll see us around the property working the land and tending the nursery. Our orchards produce macadamia nuts, coconuts, oranges, tangelos, lemons, limes, coconuts, avocados, mango, lychee and longon. We sell our fruit commercially to brokers in Canada, fruit stands on Kauai and local residents who come by to pick up their special orders. Our nursery supplies landscapers with exotic palms, tropical ornamental plants and fruit trees.
From our guestbook-
'We had a wonderful time here. Every evening we looked forward to coming 'home' to our perfect cottage. Perfectly private, perfectly surrounded by lushness...We will be recommending you to all of our friends.'
'Thank you for all of the love you've put into this beautiful cottage. We were looking for a place to be close to nature and finding your Hideaway was beyond perfect.'
'It has been a pleasure staying in such a beautiful, thoughtfully maintained place. The outdoor shower and tub have been my favorites, but the whole cottage and gardens are great.'
'What a perfect honeymoon spot. It is so romantic and secluded.'
'We've had such a beautiful visit here in your sublime love nest.'
We love our life here on the north shore of Kauai and enjoy the healthy lifestyle and unique sense of community that Kauai offers. We feel very fortunate and blessed to be able to offer visitors the unique experience of staying on a working organic tropical farm and nursery.
Lisa Breen purchased this cottage in 1981
Our farm is a labor of love and never ending work in progress. David purchased raw land in 1981 and planted orchards and gardens. Over the years his deep love for and study of the plant world has made him an expert on palms, cycads, flowering trees and fruit trees. We are both avid world travelers and Lisa designed the Hideaway as a perfect getaway with everything she would be looking for in a home away from home. Our location is ideal in every way. Minutes to stunning beaches and Kilauea town, yet still in the country.
It is the perfect place to relax for a couple. You get a house for you alone in the middle of a magnificent garden with outside shower and bath tub. A beautiful interior with attention to detail in Hawaiian style and delicious organic fruits. From there you can easily reach all the amazing beaches of the northeastern part of the island.
I'll start my review by saying the hosts were lovely, which was great for us. We spent 6 nights at the hideaway, and had the following thoughts:
- Very nice hosts who chatted with us about the island and gave us good suggestions of how to spend our days
Off the beaten path
- Fairly good location closer to the North Shore (we MUCH preferred the North side to the South)
- Hideaway came with nice beach chairs and umbrella for beach days, and had a well-equipped kitchen and grill for cooking
- Good yogurt-and-fruit breakfasts provided
The cons (at least for us):
- I thought the price was a bit expensive, compared to some other properties. Honestly, I would probably spend $60 - $75 less every night and stay in a condo near Priceville (even though it's less charming than the organic farm)
- The spot was too buggy for us to sit outside (although bug spray was provided)
- We realized that when we kept the lights on near the bed at night, we were infiltrated by little "mealy bugs." Also, the roosters crowing were pretty darn loud because you're so close to where they hang out.
Overall, this place was cute and as comfortable as could be. Just keep in mind that this really is like staying in a garden! :)
We stayed here for our honeymoon on Kauai and could not have picked a better place. My wife loved the fact that it was on an organic farm and loved having the trees everywhere. Lisa, our landlord, was super accommodating and provided us with the best coconut water we've ever had, organic milks and snacks, fresh fruit, and some awesome coffee. The outdoor shower and tub were great too! For visitors from the mainland, know that this is Hawaii and you are in a more treed and moist area which means you get some mosquitos, cockroaches, and spiders. If you make sure to close the doors, they stay outside and I'd suggest mosquito repellent to those who don't like mosquitos. The nights provided a nice breeze so although there is no AC, the temperature was always great.
For future renters who are looking to get away from the city life, find a cute small place for just the two of you or just you, have a home located centrally between Lihue and Hanalei, and just want to relax with your fresh cup of coconut water or coffee and a tray of delicious fruit, THIS IS YOUR VACATION RENTAL.
Thank you Lisa!
We loved our stay. The cottage is located down a private road in a quiet area, and the grounds are beautiful. The outside bath and shower are great as well.
There is a full-sized refrigerator and a washer/dryer and small TV, plus coffee, tea, and some other snacks. There is no oven or stove top though, that's the only slight negative.
The pictures on this listing are a true representation of what the hideaway actually looks like. This getaway exceeded our expectations from the very beginning from the wonderful accommodations to the fresh granola, organic coffee, fruits and coconut water. Not to mention the beach chairs, snorkel gear, towels, coolers, etc. Lisa provides everything you could ever need. Several of our jealous friends are already looking into booking this property based on the pictures we were sending them during our trip. We will definitely stay here again when we travel to Kauai in the future! Thanks again for being such wonderful hosts!

Not a single detail has been overlooked in preparing this oasis for visitors. This open concept guest house includes everything you will need to enjoy your stay on this most beautiful Hawaiian island. Coolers, beach chairs, beach towels, and guide books are provided for your adventures away from the property. The outdoor bath is a dream come true--our first night was a bit cool and we reveled in a soak in the claw foot tub beneath a full moon and the palm trees.
There is a fully stocked laundry, and in spite of the lack of a traditional kitchen, you'll find all that you need to enjoy delicious, fresh meals at "home." Everything is completely spotless, and in true Kauai style, you'll find separate containers for garbage, compostables, and recyclables. A point that might not matter to many, but really made an impression for me: this is the first vacation rental I've ever visited that featured high quality, sharp kitchen knives! All linens are very high quality, including the luscious robes, and soaps are all natural. The food items provided are similarly high quality--organic and local, again in the style of this lovely island.
Lisa was readily available for advice before we traveled and made excellent recommendations while we were on the island, as well. We've already recommended this gem to friends and family, some of whom have already booked their stays! We will return to this island, and when we do, we will stay again. This property would be worth twice the price, and you will not beat the value for this location.
One last note: my husband dearly wanted to stay by the ocean on our trip, so we split our time between this property and one with an ocean view. He was quite adamant that he wouldn't enjoy a location away from the coast. After leaving our ocean side condo and arriving here, he promptly said "Forget the ocean, we should have stayed here the whole time!" I had reservations about the lack of a full kitchen, but can easily say that we enjoyed our best meals here. There is not a single thing that could be done to improve this property--it is truly ideal!
As we shared our photos with family, both of our sisters replied, "paradise!" The artistry and sensuality of the plantings, cottage, and surroundings are unmatched. All the basics of bed, bathroom, furnishings, kitchen, spaces, and supplies were very comfortable and usable, nicely planned and immaculately clean. Yes, the outdoor shower and bathtub are a treat we'll not likely experience again. The provision of locally-sourced (within c.150'!) papaya, bananas, macadamias, avocado, oranges, coconut water plus Anahola granola and Kona coffee provided my new standard for "best breakfast" - a bowl of yogurt, A-granola, diced papaya, sliced bananas, local honey, splash of coconut water, and a few mac-nut pieces = superb! The location worked well for our trips around the island to it's many highlights. We advise being persistent on the Na Pali overlooks in Koke'e State Park; on our third back-and-forth between Kalalau and Pu'u O Kila with heavy clouds, occasional rain, and a little sun, the clouds broke open for wonderful views and photos of Na Pali. The provided beach chairs, towels, cooler, and all made for a perfect beach day at Hanalei Bay.
Lisa and David welcomed us warmly with their ideas, helpfulness, energy, and genuine love of their unique place, shared with others graciously. Thank you! Mahalo! A hui hou!
