A haven of peace with 5 bedrooms, garden and swimming pool

Close to the beach and the very famous town of Aigues Mortes, come and stay in our house in the characteristic Camargue village of Le Cailar in Gard, near the beaches of Le Grau du Roi and Port Camargue.

Our home, called 'L'école buissonnière' was built during the 17th century, and for a few centuries functioned as the village school. Fully restored and refurbished, come and enjoy the age-old charm and modern facilities of our home and use it as a base for exploring the Camargue.

With 5 bedrooms and room for 10 people, including 1 suite, 1 master bedroom and a lovely dormitory, 2 bathrooms, 250 m² of living area and a landscaped garden, a swimming pool and patio for relaxation and fun, come for a stay and get away from it all in the Camargue.

Because we love old stone buildings and the Camargue, we fell in love with the charm of this location.

What makes this house unique

In the centre of the Camargue and with the sea less than 25 km away at the fishing village of Le Grau du Roi and the seaside resort of Port Camargue. The village of Le Cailar en Camargue is also very close to the cities of Nîmes and Montpellier, less than 30 minutes’ drive away.

Our house is located in a characteristic village in the region, the appearance of which is protected, and which lies in the heart of the Camargue countryside. Our 17th century home retains this peaceful countryside atmosphere with all the modern conveniences.

Very atmospheric property in a small, sympathetic village

We - a family of 5, including three young kids - have stayed here for six weeks, and are very happy that we have chosen this lovely place for this special long period. As soon as you enter the porch, you feel the positive vibe of this charming house. The house is clean, well maintained and equipped, and stylishly furnished (style: 'less is more...'). Every room has its own pleasant atmosphere. The garden is very nice as well, with a pool, and the pool is heated which is great when you are staying early (or late) in the season. The village is off the main roads, small, but with a strong community, so there is often something going on. In the vicinity, there is lots to do, both seaside and inland, so we have not been bored. Whenever we needed assistance with something the landlord was most responsive. We would definitely recommend this place and are hopeful we will be able to come again next year!

Komfortable und authentische Ferienwohung in Dorflage

Die Ferienwohnung hat alles zu bieten, was man für einen angenehmen Aufenthalt benötigt - und noch mehr. Das Haus von ca. 1850 (?) ist weitestgehend wie gerade renoviert, entspricht dem lokalen Baustil und wirkt sehr authentisch. Schon bei der Vermietung wird sichergestellt, dass man offenen Fragen sofort loswerden kann und die Ankunft zeitlich flexibel abgestimmt. Die Küche bietet ausreichend Platz und ein sowohl quantitativ als auch qualitativ sehr gutes Inventar, um sich mit einer größeren Gruppe selbst zu versorgen. Auch ein fantastischer Gasgrill ist im Garten vorhanden. Ein Restaurantbesuch kam für uns damit nicht mehr in Frage :-). Lokal versorgen kann man sich direkt beim Bäcker, dem Tante Emmaladen sowie dem dazugehörigen spitzen Metzger (unbedingt die lokalen Stierwurstprodukte für kleines Geld probieren!), die alle gebündelt in 2 Minuten fußläufig erreichbar sind. Ein wenig Französisch ist jedoch hilfreich... Empfangen wird man dort mit echter Herzlichkeit und viel Französischem Charme - kleiner Kulturaustausch inklusive. Für den größeren Einkauf ist auch der nächste Supermarkt in <10min. mit dem Auto erreichbar. Das Dorf selbst hat darüber hinaus nicht viel zu bieten (außer die Festivitäten rund um die Stiere Ende September/Anfang Oktober, was wir leider knapp verpasst haben), ist aber ein perfekter Hub abseits des Massentourismus. Sollte man mal abends entspannen wollen, so bietet der Garten einen (beheizten und beleuchteten) Pool - oder man schaut den Goldfischen im Miniteich zu :). Alles in allem haben wir uns "zu Hause" und sehr wohl gefühlt. Wir würden sofort wiederkommen.

Superbe maison en Camargue, vacance ideale

La propriete est magnifique, superbe maison ancienne tres bien renovee.

Parfaitement adapte aux groupes, cette maison vous permettra de venir nombreux et d'avoir un peu d'espace personel.

La piscine est tres appreciable et surtout parfaite pour les enfants.

On a passe des vancanes formidables.

Le proprio, Jen Yves est super sympa.

Tolle Zeit in Le Cailar

Das Haus hat uns sofort gefallen. Ein typisches Haus mit alten Gemäuern und viel Flair. Der Pool war ein Traum und wir haben uns rundum sehr wohl gefühlt. Die Küche ist super ausgestattet und alles war sehr sauber. Was uns veranlasst hat oft zu kochen oder zu Grillen ( Gasgrill). Das Haus ist sehr geschmackvoll eingerichtet. Wir haben einige Ausflüge gemacht z.B. Avignon, Aigues-Mortes und Nîmes. Ist nicht weit zu fahren und sehr sehenswert. Aufgrund des heißen Wetters und mit Kids, haben wir die Stadtrundfahrten mit der Stadtbahn gebucht. Man sieht alles und die Kids fanden es klasse. Der Strand l'espiguette ist wunderschön und man kann dort sogar Tretboot fahren oder paddeln. Der Bäcker ist gleich um die Ecke und der nächste Supermarkt nur 5 min. mit dem Auto zu erreichen. Der Metzger im Ort war jedoch auch sehr gut, vor allem die leckeren Spieße aus Rindfleisch und Ente. Wir kommen bestimmt wieder. Jean-Yves, merci pour tout . il était un super vacances .

A éviter durant la fête du village surtout avec des enfants

Nous ne conseillons pas de venir début août si vous voulez vous reposer dans un endroit calme, car c'est la fête du village qui dure 10 jours! Concerts jusqu'à 3h du matin, routes barrées, nettoyage de la route à 6h du matin ! Donc autant dire que les nuits sont courtes et compliquées avec les enfants !

Autrement la maison est belle et spacieuse, mais nous regrettons la température de la piscine qui reste fraîche pour une piscine chauffée. Le propriétaire ne la chauffe qu'à 27 degré donc ne vous attendez pas à avoir plus que 29 degré même en la fermant pour optimiser la chaleur !

Au finale un peu déçu compte tenu du prix de la location. Le propriétaire devrait prévenir de la période des fêtes dès la réservation étant donné que les dates sont toujours les mêmes, et adapter ses tarifs aux désagréments occasionnés.

Elle a toujours lieu la première semaine du mois d'Aout. C'est pourtant une occasion unique de découvrir toutes les traditions camarguaises durant la semaine de la fête avec beaucoup d'animations pour petits et grands.

A perfect house in a perfect place

We enjoyed our summer holidays 2016 at L' École Buissonnière with two families (4 parents, 5 kids) and had two fantastic weeks in Le Cailar. The house and its pool garden are wonderful, Le Cailar is a welcoming and very supportive small village that offers everything you need (including southern France's best baguettes, only 40 meters away).

The house provides everything you could ask for, in a very charming manner: A big kitchen with lots of pots and pans, and sharp knives and lots and lots of dishes. While you cook your french cuisine menus you can easily have an eye on the swimming kids directly in front of the kitchen window. The living room breathes its centuries-old style with every pore. Actually, it's so nice that a map manufacturer used a picture of exactly this room on all its map front covers to show how southern France lifestyle looks like - and you live there. The sleeping rooms and bathrooms are all comfy and clean, all decorated subtle and nicely. The old classroom with four beds is great for kids as a room of their own, including a small aisle.

You can very well stay in the house and pool yard the whole time without missing a thing. But you can (and should, by the way) explore the area with France's most beautiful beaches at l'Espiguette, the beautiful medieval town of Aigues-Mortes, buzzing Montpellier or the relaxing Cervennes. We also found many small sites for canoeing, (tree) climbing, slack lining and horse riding in the area that provided small and big thrills for the kids and the parents.

Throughout the time Jean-Yves always was approachable and responsible for all sort of questions or tips; check-in and check-out have been friendly, even funny, and Jean-Yves was flexible regarding the time of arrival and departure.

Book this house if you want to have a special vacation in a real jewel in Camargue. We already plan our next holiday at L' École Buissonnière :-)

Le Cailar is a very ancient village. In the past, it was closer to the Rhône (whose course has changed over the centuries) and was virtually on the coast, which used to be accessed via a lagoon that is now silted up. It is now 15 or so kilometres away from the coast as the crow flies (this silting-up means that the coast has reclaimed land from the sea, which is therefore “further away”). This special position, in addition to its location at the confluence of two rivers called the Vistre and the Rhôny, made it a strategically location that was very early on an important one for the people who lived there. In days gone by, it was controlled by the Greeks and the Rhodians, until it became a small trading post and fishing harbour with a population of around 5,000 (compared with around 2,300 today).

It also has its own bullring, known as the Arènes du Cailar, used for novillada and courses camarguaises bullfighting, which was awarded French Historical Monument status on 18th January 1993. This has seating for more than 1,100 people and was built between 1900 and 1925 according to France’s fiche du patrimoine heritage register.

In addition to its historical monuments, the village is also where the Camargue bulls are bred and ridden. It is also especially notable due to its exceptional location in Petite Camargue, with its protected surrounding region, made up of grassland grazed by bulls and wild horses, and marshland, including the Marais de la Souteyranne, with a wide range of plants and animals. In the 19th century, Cailar was also home to the first manades (semi-feral herds) of bulls bred exclusively for course camarguaise bullfighting. This practice developed due to a surviving feudal right known as 'droit d’esplèche', giving village residents the right to use uncultivated land free of charge for grazing their herds. Nowadays it continues to be the village with the largest number of these prestigious farms, which is why it is known as the “capital” of the Petite Camargue.
