Love at first sight
Beautiful greenery and quiet spaces combined with the warm and welcoming upstairs patio. Enjoyed both immensely! Very organized labeling made lighting a breeze. Receiving daily updates from Colum made day planning easy, many useful tips. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay here!
Attention to every detail.
This colonial home is breathtaking and is equipped for anything you may need during your stay.
The central location is easily navigated by walking or taxi.
Natalie and Colum are exceptional hosts. Natalie checked in with me during our stay and let me know the various happenings around town.
Thanks to Natalie we were able to find a chef in a days notice who was able to prepare a delightful dinner prepared with local ingredients. Truly, there is not a restaurant more beautiful than this home! It was a perfect way to end our trip. Thank you for sharing this beauty with us.
If I could live anywhere in Merida this would be it.
To give context on my review, I am an archaeologist working in the Maya region for almost ten years and have been coming to Merida every year since 2011. Besides being a dream of a home, Villa Romantica is truly situated in one of the best locations of the city. It's a short walk to all of my favorites. Santa Lucia has long been a favorite park of mine with amazing food, music, and dancing. It's lively, but never feels overcrowded.
Speaking of food, right next door to this home is Soco Bakery which blew me away. It is so hard to find bread of this caliber in Merida. The cinnamon rolls are to die for and make sure to make note that fresh bagels are made on Tuesdays ;)
Back to the location. Villa Romantica is also only a few blocks from the Paseo de Montejo and it is a hop skip and a jump away from two of my favorite bars, La Mezcaleria and La Negrita.
It's literally at the heart of it all.
The house is beautifully restored and has thoughtful details throughout. I particularly liked how in the entry way a small portion of the original wall painting was left untouched, so that you can see the state in which the property was before its restoration and the skill and care in which they took to maintain its authentic beauty.... Architecture and art history enthusiasts must stay here.
In terms of comfort, the house has all the amenities and then some so I'll focus on my favorite parts of the house which were the day bed by the pool and the master bathroom's vibes. I loved that bathroom so much I did my morning yoga in there.
If you know Merida, you also know its a very very hot city in the summer. But Villa Romantica is designed in such a way that it stays quite cool and comfortable at all times, which was soooo refreshing after a long day out and about. Although there was AC, we hardly needed to use it.
The owner and property manager are communicative and helpful in such a way that no matter what trouble comes your way you can count on their understanding and support. They were there for me in a jam and trust that they would be there for any of their other guests.
I could go on all day, but I'll stop here because if you aren't convinced already to book your stay here, I'm not sure if anything will make you happy. This is the spot. Can't wait to come back. Thank you!
Wonderful Home in a Great City!
Our group had a wonderful time at Villa Romantica. The home was simply beautiful and everything was in great working order. We enjoyed many relaxing days lounging by the pool as well as on the upstairs terrace. The owner and her team provided us with helpful hints about area restaurants and activities, and also kept us well-informed about when the cleaning and pool maintenance personnel would be arriving. The home is in a great location - - -close to the pretty Parque de Santa Lucia as well as the Paseo de Montejo. Best yet - the delicious Soco Bakery is only 2 doors down. Our group also recommends the following restaurants: Catrin, Oliva, and Kuuk. If you're in town on a Thursday night, snag a reservation at Apoala so you can enjoy the Serenta Santa Lucia. It's a lot of fun. In fact, there's something going on almost every night in Merida.
Someone pinch me!
Believe the photos - Villa Romantica is beautiful soaring 20' grandeur and jaw-dropping beautiful!. Our party of 7 stayed their in July: my parents in their 70s, our 3 kids (ages 8-15) and my husband and I - we all loved the home and the Merida experience. It was quite hot when we were there so the rooftop wasn't used as much as we would have liked, but the air conditioning worked well in all the bedrooms and main living room. The house was set up for swimming, relaxing in hammocks, reading, music and even movies if you want (the kids did).
We went grocery shopping our first afternoon in Merida and stocked the kitchen for the week. It is easy to hail a taxi on the corner as well as a return taxi from the supermarket. The house's location is downtown in the historic center is a short walk to almost everything you would want to see or do. The neighborhood was all historic, clean and very safe. The pool was HEAVEN and the kids lived in it. "Alexa" played music and our hosts provided a huge supply of candles. A completely magical home! Our only issue is the key code we were given was wrong, but when we gave up and texted our hosts responded immediately with the correct code.
You could easily spend your entire time just in the house and enjoying the great local food and shopping, but Merida is a great base for exploring. We hired a private driver while in Merida which was great for a bigger group like us which would have had trouble fitting in a single rental car. If you can afford this splurge, it was worth every single penny as it takes the worry out of everything. We used Yucatan Connection (terrific) which provided an air conditioned van full of water, bug spray, towels, etc.. and spent one day in Uzmal / lunch, a Cenote day (Santa Barbara) with a stop at Mayapan and Izamal and yet another day at Celestun.
Thank you Natalie and Colum for sharing this magnificent home with us! It was a magical place!
Marvelous in Merida
We (5 adults) recently spent a week at Villa Romantica and our stay was wonderful from beginning to end. Not only was the house itself delightful, but I cannot say enough about how responsive, helpful and friendly the owner was. You will not make a mistake staying here.
To take things in order, check in was simple and clearly explained. The keys were in a lockbox so there was no need to coordinate arrival with anyone else. In fact, the owner was flexible in helping us out with our early arrival.
The house was very clean, and I think more impressive than the pictures. The rooms and bathrooms were large and comfortable. The house had plenty of space for the five of us. We were there during an especially hot time (over 100 F every day) but the fans and air conditioning worked well and kept us comfortable. The heat also made us especially appreciative of the pool, where we were able to cool off in the afternoon.
I've found that some of these rentals advertise a full kitchen but when you actually try to cook you find a lot missing. That was not the case here--a nice working kitchen with everything you need.
We had one minor problem with a shower, but the property manager was very responsive and solved the problem right away. I also communicated directly with the owner, who was very helpful with places to go and things to do. She actually helped us coordinate a trip in Celestun which we were having
trouble make happen, and which we might have missed otherwise. Thanks again, Natalie!
This house is nicely situated for a visit to Merida, as the town center is just a few blocks away and there are many restaurants close by. As others have noted, there is a great bakery just two doors away which we enjoyed spending time at talking with the owner and his bakers.
All in all, this was a great place to stay, and I would recommend it to anyone visiting Merida.
Thank you so much Steven for your lovely detailed review. I am so happy you enjoyed your stay with us. Hopefully we get the opportunity to host you again in the future :-)
Horse drawn carriages available steps away from the villa.
Fun for the young and not so young :-)
