About Simon Sturge
I'm Simon, I manage 4 boats for a hotel in Amsterdam for the last 5 years. I used to run a guesthouse in Sitges, just outside Barcelona, for 5 years before this and although I miss the weather of Spain, this city is a great place to live. The Axo boat is 2 separate and private apartments (your side is not shared, its private) on one, so if you need something, I'm just next door. I try to check everyone in and explain the basics. However if I can't, I made a little book to help you along.
Simon Sturge purchased this House Boat in 2011
Why Simon Sturge chose Amsterdam-Centrum
Staying on a houseboat, I think, is a very unique an exciting way to experience Amsterdam. Watching the boats go by is so fascinating. The Dutch love their boats and in summer the canals get quite busy with boats of all shapes and sizes, seriously I've seen a boat in the shape of a clog and a beer barrel and also an old car. Occasionally the swans will pop by to see if you have some bread but mind your fingers as they are not shy. The boat is right in the centre of the city so you are very well place to see and walk to everything it has to offer. The trade off is it is a little more noisy than say a quieter canal but most guests don't seem bothered too much. I love the energy it brings but it's not for everyone. I hope you will love it to. Do feel free to ask me any questions before you book. I will give an honest answer.

On the canal
I have to admit that when I first arrived I was a little disappointed - mostly because I had the incorrect impression that there would be some outdoor space - many houseboats have an outdoor set up.. I got over that quickly when I opened the windows and we sat watching (and being watched by) the boats going by outside the window... and the ducks!
Being on the boat took a little adjustment but I really enjoyed it. Amsterdam was having a heat wave but it was surprisingly comfortable up until the last night. Luckily the unit had a fan so we could keep reasonably comfortable plus create some white noise to help us sleep.
The location is outstanding. Close to transit and you can walk almost everywhere. One day we walked 10 miles! The check in was a little awkward - we took an Uber from the train station to the check in location and had to walk a bit of a distance with our bags.
Stay on the water!
We stayed in the houseboat with our two boys and loved it! You cant beat the view. No better way to experience Amsterdam than living on the Amstel River.
Simon and Jean were very helpful
We enjoyed the stay very much. The house boat was very nice and Simon and Gene were very nice and helpful. Highly recommend it
Unique Amsterdam Stay!
This location was a fun and amazing way to see Amsterdam! Very comfortable and more room than we expected. We met Simon on our first day and he could not have been more welcoming.
The houseboat is beautiful and the perfect way to experience Amsterdam!
We loved staying on this houseboat! It was beautiful, in a perfect location, easy to check-in and check-out and Simon was super helpful with tips on what to do. It was the best way to fully experience Amsterdam! I will visit again!!
Loved our stay, the boat was ideal for our week in Amsterdam. Close to centre, opposite the opera house, lovely hosts! Clean and tidy, great little kitchen and relaxed space. A bit of noise from the street, but it is worth it to be close to the centre.
The best way to see Amsterdam is to rent a bike to discover the old part of town with it's chic cafes and restaurants and to get to Anne Frank, Van Gogh, Rembrandt and Rijks museums to name just a few. Canal boat tours are always nice or hire a boat and go your own way. The Dutch love their bikes and boats. If the weather is nice head for Vondel park or the beach is just 20 mins away. In spring the tulip gardens of Keukenhoff is a must.
And with plenty of night life on your doorstep you are never far from a good night out. There is so much to see and do you might not have time for it all but then you can always come back and see us again.
