Secluded Jungle Palapa above the Sea near Puerto Vallarta/Chimo/Yelapa

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,100 sq ft
Property type bungalow
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

A romantic beachfront property South of Puerto Vallarta

If you are looking to get away from the fast pace of life, this tranquil paradise destination is the right location for you...  Our beautiful palapa is the ultimate way to unplug.  Located an hour away from Boca Tomatlan, Los Chonchos palapa village is a must-see community.  Our open aired bungalow is located in the jungle above the beach with grand ocean views, cool sea breezes, and access to 2 private beaches.  If you choose to explore the big beach located to the South of Los Chonchos and a 15 minute walk, you most likely will have the beach to yourself.

This community and our palapa is a perfect destination for families and for children who are enamored with nature.   This natural environment allows for the most curious of children to discover turtles, crabs, butterflies and many more animals and habitats.   If you enjoy being active in the outdoors, Los Chonchos does not disappoint.  Snorkeling, sea kayaking, world class fishing, and swimming are right out your front door.  If you truly want to unwind, the open air environment lends itself to relaxation and taking it slow. Experience Mexico at its most beautiful while renting this palapa.

The palapa is newly refurbished with all amenities that are needed for simple living.  There are two bedrooms with space for 4 people to sleep.  The furniture is made out of jungle wood and hand crafted by a local artisan. Fresh, newly bought pillows and bedding will provide warmth for night sea breezes.  The palapa also contains a kitchen island, bar stools, a hammock, and romantic candle lighting that allows for the most magical of nights.

Los Chonchos, an eco-preserve containing 24 palapas that were built in 2004  The palapa is run by solar powered energy.  It contains a gas stove, refrigerator, and running spring water. Fresh drinkable water will be provided when you arrive.   This eco-preserve provides a local on site chef who can make 3 meals a day when pre arranged or you can bring your food with you to cook meals in a fully equipped kitchen.  Chimo, the nearest fishing village, is a half hour to an hour jungle/oceanside hike allowing for you to buy amenities and fresh fish if needed.  Los Chonchos prides itself on providing employment for locals who live in the area.  The men who help unload your luggage, haul your luggage to the palapa, and make the prearranged food are exceptionally  helpful and essential in making Los Chonchos available to the public.

After flying in to Puerto Vallarta, a taxi can be taken to Boca de Tomatlan.  There are 2 water taxis a day that will take you to the community of Los Chonchos.  The water taxi is an hour long boat ride that allows for amazing views of the ocean, Yelapa, oceanside villages and mountainous jungles.  If needed, a prearranged taxi can take you straight from the airport to the dock at Boca de Tomatlan.

Kayaking (kayaks provided)

World class fishing

Star gazing

Whale and dolphin watching

The palapa contains running water, an indoor and outdoor shower, 2 sinks, fridge, freezer, stove, stainless steel pots and pans, a cooler, and most kitchen amenities including a French press. There is a railing around the deck for anyone traveling with young kids. Mosquito nets are provided and are recommended when sleeping at night.

Please note: the location is located above the sea.  It has its benefits by being secluded, no smoke from campfires on the beach and privacy.  The walk to the palapa includes a small but steep set of stairs that could be a little challenging.  Take your time and don't worry about your luggage.  The onsite crew will help you carry your luggage to and from the palapa.  There is a railing to assist you up the stairs.  It takes only about 5-10 minutes from the beach.

As mentioned earlier, Los Chonchos has no store, only access to prepared meals and beer.  If required, more food can be bought in Chimo.  Planning and preparation for meals include food shopping before taking the water taxi.

To prepare for your trip you may consider bringing:

Bug spray

Snorkling gear

Fishing poles

First aid kit

The water taxi is a wet landing.  There will be people to help you carry your luggage and food up the stairs to the palapa.  The walk to the palapa is a short but a steep climb 5-10 minutes from where the boat lands.

As mentioned earlier, two beaches can be accessed from the palapa-the beach where the taxi lands and another bigger beach 15 minutes by foot South of the village.  One of the most magical aspects of this stay is the access to 2 secluded, beautiful beaches.  The jungle provides an equally appealing and intriguing environment with plant diversity and a stunning amount of coconuts and palms. Observe  mangos, bananas, citrus, and native fruits amidst the palapa community.  This is also a botanists heaven with flowing trees,  plants, and shrubs year round.

When you choose to stay at Los Chonchos you will not be disappointed.  It is an oceanside paradise waiting for you!

About The Owner

Our family is always on the move exploring all over the world. We landed in Chonchos in March and loved it so much that we returned 2 times after our initial trip to look at purchasing a palapa. Our family loves exploring the Rocky Mountains, the SW desert, and international destinations that are both safe and adventurous for the family. Since we live in the Rocky Mountains, we realized Los Chonchos would be a great opportunity for the family to also experience the wonders of the ocean.

The Owner purchased this bungalow in 2017

Why The Owner chose Chimo

We bought Casa Sarah this year and contracted with a local contractor to finish and update this palapa. The results were incredible. The location in the village is superb and the local beaches are magical. I hope you enjoy your trip as much as we did!

What makes this bungalow unique

An isolated ocean paradise within the Mexican jungle. Two private beaches to access and sea kayaks provided. You can charter a local fishing boat to deepsea fish. Meals can be cooked on site.

Phenomenal! This place is so incredibly magical! This was by far my most loved travel experience to date! The sound of the ocean all day and night is so calming. Being surrounded by nature and wildlife including but not limited to whales, dolphins, cows, bats, birds ( Amazing for bird watching) geckos. The bed was very comfortable. The place was decorated beautifully and had everything we needed to cook our food! The shower was such a neat experience being able to see outdoors and a beautiful garden right in the bathroom. Falling alseep to waves and insects chirping was amazing, The stars! The night sky is incredible here! The sunsets are beautiful. The staff is very helpful as well as Alicia! Hiking to Chimo is a nice adventure. Kayaking, snorkeling, swimming and more! You cant go wrong coming here. Its literally paradise, We will be back and we will be telling all our friends and family to come here as well! Thanks for the amazing experience.

Remote paradise

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking for a peaceful beach vacation in Mexico without the tourist trap resort vibe, this place is perfect and fairly easy to access from Puerto Vallarta. The location is idyllic--beautiful jungle, two essentially private beaches, and completely uncrowded. The palapa is very cozy and nicely furnished with a functional kitchen.

It was so wonderful to wake up to the sounds of the ocean and birds every morning! And, we were thrilled to see humpback whales breaching just offshore. It was nice to have the kayaks available for use. Maybe we just had bad timing, but it does not seem to be much of a snorkeling destination--murky water and few fish.

We loved hiking to Chimo, which is like stepping back 50 years. Definitely bring all the food you want to cook, as there is not much available at the mercado in Chimo. Although, thankfully you can buy a 6-pack to go at Arturo's restaurant, which also has great seafood for cheap.

All in all, a delightful destination if you're wanting some solitude in a beautiful setting!

Peaceful palapa in paradise

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our week in the palapa very much! It was comfortable, well equipped and beautifully decorated. We loved the cozy cocoon feeling of sleeping under the mosquito netting and listening to the waves. Loved the candle light in the evenings. We brought a couple of Luci lights (solar lanterns) that were useful when preparing dinner. The day we arrived was very windy with big swells and the water taxi wasn't sure they'd be able to drop us off but they managed. The guys did a great job keeping our things dry coming off the boat. We brought zippered insulated bags for groceries which were very useful. Loved the walk to Chimo and highly recommend lunch at Arturo's. We had shrimp, red snapper, ceviche and lobster. All were outstanding. We also bought shrimp and snapper from Arturo's to take with us and cook at the palapa. We saw over 60 species of birds and many varieties of butterflies. They all loved the flowers in the trees. Whales were a constant presence and breached frequently. We spent many hours sitting on the deck watching the world go by and loved it.

Magical Jungle Beachfront Treehouse Palapa

  • 5 of 5

Trekking down shore to Los Chonchos was the most magical grand finale of our aMaZiNg vacation to the Pacific coast of Mexico! We feel extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to experience the love built into the foundation of your jungle beachfront treehouse Palapa!

The sun, the stars, the ocean, the jungle, the private beachfront fire and the warm Mexican hospitality of the property staff Saul + Chilemo... ahhh... words cannot truly express the genuine tranquility + liberty from the chaos of our "real" world lives.. We are super excited to HIGHLY recommend your home to the adventurist types at home + abroad.

This place is a treasure if you love nature, outdoor activities and feeling connected to your environment. Both my husband I are very grateful we were able to experience the peace of this location.

Upon arrival the wonderful staff, Saul and Chileno, helped us get our groceries and cargo out of the water taxi and up the hill to Casa Sarah... making the climb seem effortless on their part. Throughout our stay they were very friendly and discreetly available to help when we needed a fresh jug of drinking water or had a question.

During our stay we loved waking up to the sound of the ocean and the rustling of the breeze through the palms. In the mornings we enjoyed coffee on the deck, lounging and reading. Our activities included snorkeling, kayaking, butterfly-watching (so many!!!) and a hike to the local village, Chimo. There we were greeted warmly at the beachfront restaurant, had a lunch of the freshest ceviche ever, and were able to purchase fresh shrimp and whole fish for our dinners. Most of the time though, we simply enjoyed relaxing at the beach and soaking in the warmth and waves. Alicia has thoughtfully provided beach chairs and an umbrella to make lounging on the sand an elevated experience.

My husband and I enjoy cooking... so we loved creating dinners featuring the local seafood and produce (purchased at the grocer in Puerto Vallarta) in the well-appointed kitchen. Such luxury to be so well-equipped in a remote location! We'd definitely suggest making a loose meal plan and supporting grocery list before you arrive. It made grocery shopping so much easier/efficient and at the end of the week we had very little wasted food. We were able to get some extra fruit and veggies at the little market in Chimo as well.

After our evening meals we'd enjoy the glow of romantic candlelight throughout Casa Sarah, and then step out onto the deck to stargaze until our eyes got too tired and we would slip away to bed.

Perfect days in a very magical place!

Casa Sarah was beautiful. The view was amazing.

  • 5 of 5

While it is necessary to exert some energy getting to this jungle palapa, it is worth the effort. The water taxi is a unique preface to the final destination--the crew are experienced and will get you safely from the boat to land no matter how rough the seas. The walk up to Casa Sarah is worth the 100 stair steps because the view is incomparable. We saw humpback whales breach while relaxing on deck chairs. The pictures shown are exactly as the place appears. I suggest bringing headlamps and flashlights for extra light at night for reading and just in case. You truly are in the jungle, a rare experience for me. I am glad I stayed at Casa Sarah.

Chimo is the nearest town. It can take anywhere between 45-90 minutes to walk there. There are 2 water taxis that can be used to reach Chimo, Yelapa, and Puerto Vallarta. If you are staying in Chonchos, there is a boat that can be chartered to take people deep sea fishing.
