THE CRAFTSMAN BEACH HOUSE EXPERIENCE

Orcas Island is the “Gem of the San Juan Islands”! Play on the beach for hours or sit on the porch to enjoy the stunning saltwater and Mt. Baker views. Your home away from home is a 2200 square foot 1920’s Craftsman Bungalow in a lovely quiet knoll with a few homes. Fir floors and high ceilings downstairs, this large, comfortable residence boasts 6 PRIVATE SLEEPING ROOMS with two shared baths, making it a perfect vacation home for one, two or even three families! (See “Sleeping Arrangements” below.) On nearly 1 ACRE of grassy lawn, you can enjoy volleyball, football, Frisbee, soccer, bocce, horseshoes, badminton, laying in the sun and evenings around the fire pit. The beach is just 200 yards down the gently rolling lawn and across a quiet lane. EASY TO USE FAMILY FRIENDLY KAYAKS ARE AVAILABLE AT NO CHARGE!

THERE ARE NO HIGH CLIFFS OR DECKS MAKING THE HOME AND BEACH ACCESS SAFE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN AND OLDER ADULTS.

THE EXPERIENCE

Every day you will be greeted with a view of Puget Sound and the spectacular sight of Mount Baker standing tall in the sunrise. (Weather providing!) The view from the living room, dining room, and covered porch across the big lawn is a joy to wake to each morning. You can see Sucia and Matia Islands with Patos Island just to the north. Relax as you watch the sun rise, see eagles soar and deer graze. The orientation of the house and grounds are open, light and sunny all day and late into the afternoon. The small neighborhood is quiet and friendly. The sun won't glare in your eyes as you watch Mount Baker bathed in the glorious light of sunset.

THE BEACH

The beach is in Buckhorn Bay on Orcas Island. At all but the highest tide, you can explore the rocky beach for miles. (Note: The beach ranges from small to large rocks. Most of the beach is privately owned, so walk or explore-but don't camp or loiter.) Our mooring buoy is right in the bay. The free recreational sit-inside kayaks are easy to store at the beach or throw in the back of a truck for transport to another bay for exploring. Many guests have said this home is "better than waterfront"because the beach is so easily accessible. (Many waterfront homes in the San Juans are precariously perched on a rocky shore or on a high bank requiring a drive just to enjoy the beach! And if the home is on the beach, there is rarely a lawn and often the cost of rental is prohibitive.)

THE LOCATION

Orcas Island near the town of Eastsound

Orcas Island in Washington State is known as 'the gem of the San Juan Islands'. The home is 20 minutes from the ferry landing and 2.5 miles from the charming town of Eastsound. (Think coastal Maine). Everything you need is waiting for you (except stop lights, traffic, fast food and franchises). Enjoy the adorable shops, restaurants, farmers market and even a movie theatre. You can eat local! It is easy to find food entirely grown or raised on Orcas! Closer still to the house, there is a lovely park with tennis courts, a Skateboard Park (designed and funded by Warren Miller himself) and a basketball court, baseball fields, and bocce court. Moran State Park, Washington’s fourth largest State Park, encompasses several gorgeous lakes for hiking, swimming and boating, are a 12-mintute drive where you can hike, swim, bike, paddle boat or kayak.

THE SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS

The Orcas Island Craftsman Beach House has a casual feel with comfortable and eclectic furnishings, making it easy to feel at home and relax. There are SIX separate sleeping rooms, with beds for up to 14 (5 queens, 4 singles). Four Queens are NEW Memory Foam, Temperpedic type mattresses. 1 Queen is firm mattress with memory foam topper. The layout: Upstairs, off a large central hallway, there are 4 private bedrooms including a 'sunroom' with two dormer windows and a view to the water and Mt. Baker. 3 rooms upstairs have queens (one also has a trundle bed with two twins), 1 room has two twins and there is a shared remodeled full bath. There is a spare futon under the queen. Downstairs one bedroom is adjacent to the 2nd full bath and has a firm queen mattress with memory foam topper The other downstairs bed has a new tempurpedic style queen bed.

About Kati Nickerson

We live in north Puget Sound and have been married for 26 years. We have two children, one in and one out of college. We spent every summer of their early years sailing the San Juan and Gulf Islands and have traveled with them all over the world, including a once in a lifetime two-week sailing trip in the Greek Islands. We all believe that Orcas Island is the most beautiful place on earth. Now we enjoy our 21' power boat, 34' sailboat and time together at the Craftsman Beach House. Sharing our home and sailboat with others is a great joy and helps make our dream of owning a home in the San Juans possible.

Why Kati Nickerson chose Orcas Island

It's the JUST RIGHT place! Room enough for large groups but cozy and warm and sooo comfortable when it is just the two of us. We have good friends with a home on the water near our home. Every time we left we'd look at the (at the time) distressed Craftsman Beach House and say "if that ever went on the market let's try to buy it". Well, it did and we did! The location is ideal with the stunning view, and the bright open acre to play on and grow fruit trees. The property gets lots of light. Our favorite marine parks in the San Juans (Sucia and Matia) are just a 10 minute power boat ride away. With a stunning 'exploring' beach a short stroll down the lawn, the town just walking distance (ok, a 40 minute walk, but still) or a short bike ride-(10 minutes) away, and great friends nearby, this home had everything we dreamed.

What makes this house unique

Really, we never have to leave if we don't want to! The big lawn is great for frisbee and all manner of family yard games; the firepit for songs, stories and s'mores; the beach to explore for hours and build forts; the warm, casual and traditional house for gatherings large and small and an old porch to sit on with a glass of wine while Mt. Baker lights up the sky. We have to pinch ourselves sometimes.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a very enjoyable time. The weather was perfect-lots of sun and fun. This was our first time here and it couldn't have been better. Went fishing and put crab pots, hiking and just general hanging out. We want to book the same dates for next year!

Orcas Island Haven

  • 5 of 5

The house was a fantastic house for our group. We were a mixed group of people that were great friends and people that just met each other. The house was spacious, quiet, and private! Everyone was able to have their own room with a comfortable bed. The kitchen was spacious and fully stocked with dishes and appliances. We made so many great meals. The house was a great location. It is not secluded, but the land between houses is perfect and the yard is beautiful facing the water and sunset. In the evening a family of EIGHT deer came through for dinner. Beautiful! We spent our day hiking Mt. Constitution and really enjoyed coming home and relaxing throughout the house to rest and recuperate. The owner is super responsive and helpful in preparation for the trip and throughout the weekend. I would definitely recommend this house for groups and families with kids. Has so much to offer!

Wonderful house, wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

Homey, spacious, comfortable beds, gorgeous view, short walk to a lovely beach, quiet cove for kayaking, nice fire pit, friendly deer, condiments provided. Couldn't figure out how to work the TV but we didn't really need it :)

Owner's Response: Thanks for the great review. As I note in the listing here is no cable TV at the home. The set up is for streaming netflix or amazon or watching DVD"s. I will leave instructions for future guests though. Glad you had a great time otherwise!

A Wonderful Place for the Family

  • 4 of 5

Our stay on Orcas Island was wonderful. My adult children are still talking about it. At least 2 of them want to move to the Island. If you are looking for a place to spend a fantastic week then this is the place to go.

The Beach House is everything it is advertised to be. The 6 bedrooms really came in handy. It was almost perfect for us. The house is a bit dated but clean and worked well for a large group. The kitchen space is a bit tight so plan on that. The stairs to the upstairs are rather narrow and steep so they might not work well for an older person but there are two bedrooms on the main floor. The access to the beach is easy but it is a walk and thus takes some effort. It isn't as nice as having a place right on the beach but it also makes things a bit safer for families with small children as you aren't right on the water. There is plenty of yard space and it is utilized several times during the day by multiple deer. We had a set of regular visitors especially in the evening.

The location of the Beach House is very good. It is close to Eastsound. We rode our bikes into town several times. The house is on a dead end road but there was a surprising amount of traffic on the road. The good thing about the island is that there is a lot to do and it is all relatively close. We especially enjoyed Moran State Park.

Tips for House:

1. If you can, you might want to bring your own pillows.

2. You can do crabbing if you have a cage and a license. It worked well for us.

3. Be aware of outdoor file restrictions. It was extremely dry and there was an outdoor fire ban in place so we couldn't make use of the nice firepit that was available at the house. The firepit and benches would have made for some great nights but that didn't work out for us.

4. Utilize the washer/dryer during your stay so you don't have to do all of the laundry on the last day

5. Visit the Brown Bear in Eastsound for delicous baked goods

6. Utilize the kayaks available with the house. Our family loved going out on the water.

7. Make your ferry reservations ahead of time

8. Don't forget to bring towels for the beach

9. If you are there on Saturday go to the Farmers Market in Eastsound. Bring cash. Prepare to eat some good food.

10. Yes, there are gas stations on the Island.

11. You can walk on the ferry for free to go visit other islands. Check out San Juan island and Friday Harbor.

The host was easy to work with and I would recommend this location.

Wonderful stay!!

  • 5 of 5

Had a marvelous week - my favorite part was sitting on the front porch on the morning and having coffee watching the sunrise behind Mt. Baker. Breathtaking every day!! Kayaking was fabulous as well, porpoises and seals would be out swimming along with us. Truly beautiful spot!

Wonderful family beach-house!

  • 5 of 5

We were three families totaling 12 people and this wonderful, lived-in home, never felt cramped. The listing is accurate and the beds were comfortable. We enjoyed coffee on the deck, had dinners in the spacious dining room, and used the fire pit nearly every evening for s'mores. Location was great for us as it was a short drive to kayaking, whale watching, sailing, and hiking. Communication with the owners was super easy and thorough. We all decided we would love to book the home again if/when we return to Orcas!
