About John Allen

My late wife Jill and I built this cabin in 2009 with her family's log chalet (in the Adirondacks) in mind. We were married 23 wonderful years and for many of them we ran a small Bed-N-Breakfast in Pittsfield named "The American House". For most of my career I have been a Chef in the Berkshires but I now work in the dining room at Canyon Ranch, a high-end health resort in Lenox. I look forward to helping you have the time of your life here!

John Allen purchased this cabin in 2009

Splendid Isolation

  • 5 of 5

Though are stay was short, the time at the cabin was wonderful.

John was a gracious host and the cabin was clean and well stocked.

The surroundings were perfect. You could not see any neighbors and the yard leading down to the lake was great!

Down by the lake you have many choices for relaxing or fun. A canopy, Hamock,a well supplied tent and a awesome canoe.

John also told me that we would be the first people to enjoy he log bed, up in the loft of the cabin. My adult daughter did and said it was great. I hope to come back when I can stay longer!

Perfect retreat for our family

  • 5 of 5

You will love this place if you:

- want seclusion

- want a truly STOCKED kitchen, heck fully stocked house

- love nature (we saw a fox and a marmot)

- want to feel like a member of the family

- are comfortable with a somewhat less-than-completely-private arrangement (see below)

Three of us shared this beautiful log house. Our adult son slept in the loft which he really liked. There’s one very large bathroom which is part of the one real bedroom. Two screens were put up around the bed to give us some privacy when our son used the bathroom at nite. Quite acceptable for us-we are family after all. Probably not the best arrangement for 2 couples though. That aside, this place would be the house we would pick out of thousands for our family.

If you stay here, be sure to use the canoe often, the hammocks, the screened-in eating area down by the water, the grill, the griddle in the kitchen and the awesome jet tub. We did!

There are beach towels, umbrellas, even robes to use. Really felt like home away from home.

Thanks John, we’ll be back.

Great stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at the cabin. Everything was clean and comfortable, and John was very generous with items in the refrigerator (soda, condiments, etc...) The lake area was comfortable as well with a dining table, hammocks, and we had a nice ride in the canoe. Good location for going north to Williamstown, N. Adams, and South to Lenox. Thank you for a great stay! Sarah

Wetlands, beavers, canoe...

  • 5 of 5

This was great. A perfect blend of nature and comfort that suited our family group's wide age range. John was excellent, quick to respond but left us alone. I appreciated how well laid out it all is, lots of little details like views from the hammock, solar lights here and there and the sense of total privacy even though other houses are not far away. A place for nature. The house is cozy and very nice with many good touches. It could have felt a bit on top of each other if we hadn't had the superb extra space of the very good 3 person tent and a whole fire pit area where I spent most time. The canoe was the best thing of the lot. This is a two for one deal- Glamping with a house on the side, or the other way round. Thanks John!

A lovely property with access to a swimmable lake, far from the madding crowd!

  • 4 of 5

This small cottage on the lake in Pittsfield worked well for us. The place was clean and well stocked and our host very responsive and helpful. It was a distance from some of the cultural activities we enjoyed, so as long as you don't mind a twenty minute ride, it is a great place to stay. My only concern was that the bed in the upstairs loft room were air mattresses, not regular ones. I need a bit more cushioning to be super comfortable, so I ended up sleeping on the couch in the TV room. My daughter loved floating in the lake on one of the several floaties and I only wish we had had time to paddle on the lake. A very relaxing weekend!
