The Estoril Coast is a cosmopolitan resort of world renown, bounded by the sea to the south, extending from Carcavelos to Cascais. Known as a haunt of international spies in World War II, and being an inspiration to Ian Flemming, due to his experience lifetime in Estoril, has led him to create 007 James Bond’s character. Actually, the film “On her majesty���s secret services” was shooted in Estoril, and Hotel Palacio was the main stage.

From the 30s of last century, Estoril became a hideaway for various pretenders to European thrones as well as European monarchs exiles (among which the King of Spain, Juan Carlos), writers, politicians, artists, merchants and Jews persecuted by the Third Reich.

Estoril is now a palm-fringed, pastel playground of the well-off and well connected, drawn by a winning combination of Europe's largest casino, a range of first-class hotels and some superb golf courses.

Estoril plays host to the Estoril open tennis tournament in April - an important clay-court warm-up for the French open and the Estoril Golf course has held the PGA Portuguese open.

Next to the casino takes place, every year, in July and August, the Craft Fair Estoril (FIARTIL), the oldest in Portugal. Artisans from all over the country sell and manufacture wood, wicker, linen, wool, ceramic work, tile, as well as other materials. The event also includes folk dances performances and evidence of the Portuguese gastronomy.

The beach of São Pedro do Estoril, on Estoril Coastline, surrounded by ravines and bounded on the east by a pontoon and to the west by Ponta do Sal, has a unique natural beauty and is often stage of national and international Surf and Body board competitions.

The surrounding promenade is full of restaurants and bars, and the nightlife is quite popular.

The access to the beach is easy. It has a large car park for those arriving by car via Marginal and an underground tunnel for those arriving by train or by foot. São Pedro do Estoril, is very well served by trade, services and restaurants.
