About Melanie Stephens

I have been fortunate to be brought up in a small fishing village in the west of Cornwall. For as long as I have known my parents have had the cottage in Devon as a retreat from the bustling summer tourism. This has always been a treasured family holiday home where we could all recharge our batteries together.

Melanie Stephens purchased this cottage in 1960

Why Melanie Stephens chose Dartmoor

My parents fell upon this property when touring Devon in their caravan. On first sight they fell in love with this picturesque thatched cottage and we have treasured it as part of the family ever since.

What makes this cottage unique

Who could fail to adore this charming cottage nestled in the heart of Dartmoor? It offers peace and tranquillity from everyday stresses yet never faraway there's plenty of little villages and towns to explore. Further afield there's many more opportunities to visit tourist attractions such as; Paignton Zoo, Torquay Amusements, Newton Abbott Horse racing, golf courses and much more.

Beautiful cottage

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful, homely cottage. Very well equipped, the downstairs utility/shower room was a godsend with three boys and the washer dryer was very handy.

The cottage has been renovated to a very high standard yet still retains all the charm and character you would expect to find in an old cottage. A lovely, peaceful relaxing garden.

It was so nice to hear owls at night time.

Even our little dog was at home there straight away which is unusual for her as she can be nervous in new surroundings.

It was lovely for us to catch up with family and the boys are even talking about staying next year.

The Kestor Inn was very accommodating and we had a really nice break in Manaton.

Thank you Melanie for the wine and delicious lemon cake, and for the phone call to make sure that we had arrived safely and that we had everything we needed.

Stunning cottage in a wonderful location!

  • 5 of 5

We had the most fantastic week staying at 2 Freelands cottage. First of all, the cottage itself is a beautiful, quaint, thatched cottage in a gorgeous village. Melanie has equipped the cottage with everything you could possibly need and wifi, heating etc are all easy to use. One thing I would say is that this cottage, unlike others we've been to, is extremely true to the photos - if anything is a little bigger than it appears! We found the information booklet extremely useful and used Melanie's suggestions of places to visit as a starting point for most of our walks. The location of the cottage is good, with plenty of walks from the doorstep (if you know where to look!) Manaton is perfectly located for easy access to many of the nearby villages and attractions - use Melanie's suggestions for good pubs/ places to eat. We found them all excellent recommendations! We would particularly recommend the 5 mile walk around Lustleigh Cleave followed by Sunday Lunch in The Cleave pub. All in all, we couldn't fault our time here and would happily return year on year. Thank you Melanie!

Charming hideaway on the edge of the moor..

  • 5 of 5

This wonderful characterful cottage on the eastern edge of Dartmoor ticked all the boxes for our stay over New Year.

Set high up in Manaton, it is a traditional thatched cottage with Inglenook fireplace and woodburner, which we found very useful in the cold weather. Kitchen well equipped and met our needs. Bedrooms charming and stair gates in case you have young kids. Lovely views to the moors, and great dark skies for stargazing. One of the main things of appeal about Manaton is the ability to do a lot of walks from the doorstep without using the car: Bowerman's Nose, Becky Falls and Manaton rocks to name three excellent ones. The Kester Inn is a stone's throw away and does excellent fish and chips, plus basic provisions.

I would recommend this cottage for a stay, especially if you are seeking peace and quite and beautiful Dartmoor on your doorstep

We enjoyed our stay in Manaton, the cottage was comfortable with lots of homely touches, and perfectly situated to explore the dramatic moorland and Tors nearby. Lots of good local walks, and a friendly pub nearby. Thank you 😀

A well maintained and space efficient cottage in lovely countryside

  • 4 of 5

Our family members all enjoyed our stay at the cottage. The kitchen/dining area was cosy for the five of us and the scene of enjoyable meals and hard fought games of Scrabble !

We were visiting the area for a family wedding at Staverton but also had time for walks on Dartmoor and on the coast.

Thank you, Melanie, for ensuring that all our needs were accommodated.

Becky Falls a natural waterfall is located in the village of Manaton. The village itself is situated in the Dartmoor Natural Park and there are plenty of walks from the front door through the local countryside and rugged moors. It's a nature lover's haven with plenty of fine watering holes nearby for those more interested in sampling good country meals and ales.
