About this property

Le Point - Charming Artist’s House In Beautiful Provence Village

Le Point is a small stone house on a medieval street in the unspoilt village of Cucuron, which lies inside the Luberon Nature Park in the Provence region of the south of France, 40 minutes drive north of Aix-en-Provence. The house is a treasure that has been in our family since the 1970’s when the muralist Mary Adshead, wife of artist Stephen Bone, restored it so she had a bolt hole in an area of France she loved. The small bedroom is decorated with Mary's murals.
The village is surrounded by beautiful countryside and lies at the foot of the Luberon hills. It has a traditional market on Tuesdays around the bassin (large carp pond) and square which is shaded by towering, 200-year-old plane trees. The village includes a cooperative wine cellar where local wines can be tasted and where a walking trail starts and you can discover the wine-growing activity around the area from a historical standpoint.

The house is ideal for a couple or small family and comprises:
Ground floor:
A spacious double bedroom, with king sized bed, with single bedroom and bathroom accessed via the main bedroom. The single bed has a pull out below and the room can be arranged to accommodate two beds (best for one adult or 2 children).
The bathroom has a large bath with overhead shower and a washing machine. The double bedroom includes seating and a fireplace that can be used in the winter months. Thick stone walls mean that the rooms are relatively cool even in the height of Summer.

First floor:
Reached by a steep set of ancient stone stairs (not suitable for small children or those with mobility issues) there is a light and airy living room/kitchen/diner and small terrace. The living area includes a double sofa bed. The kitchen area contains an oven, with hob and grill, microwave, fridge, kettle, toaster and all the pots, pans and crockery you would need to cater at home. The living area includes an eclectic collection of books. Views from the kitchen window are breathtaking. The very small private terrace is suitable for two to sit, enjoy the sun and eat.

General points:

The accommodation is most suitable for a couple or small family, but please note that the ancient stone staircase to the first floor is quite steep and would be unsuitable for under fives or the disabled.
Duvets and pillows are supplied, plus linen and towels, if required (but please bring your own towels for swimming). The house is all electric. It has an internet radio with mp3 connector, wifi internet access and a telephone but no TV. There are plenty of heaters for winter use and two fans for the summer.
Ample parking is available in the village, but the lane that Le Point is on is too narrow for cars, closest drop off is about 50 metres away.

Guest comment in 2014:-
Wonderful little hideaway in the storybook Provencal village of Cucuron. The previous reviewer described it perfectly...white washed stone walls and ceilings, challenging staircase and an adorable hand painted trompe l' oeil mini-bedroom. Roomy, fully functional kitchen/dining/living area upstairs, bedrooms downstairs. The kitchen has a wonderful little balcony with THE BEST view of the countryside. The owners are friendly and respond quickly to correspondence. Be sure to read the big scrapbooks in the bookcase upstairs...wonderful story of the artist family that purchased this little jewel of a home.

We feel like an honorary villager!
Le Point has been our home away from home three times now and each time surpasses the last! It's very rustic but has all the modern amenities you need: Wifi, laundry, microwave, oven, and stove. There are plenty of fresh linens waiting for you and lots of items you may have forgotten to bring from home. Hand held hair dryer is available. We enjoy shopping at the market surrounding the "L'etang" pool in the town center on Tuesdays and making daily visits to the Boulanger and Patisserie. The kitchen is fully functional to make meals if you like or you can visit one of several restaurants within walking distance. Do beware that Le Point requires climbing fairly steep stone stairs and the village has many cobblestoned inclines. We're not exactly athletic (to say the least) and we had no problem. The owners come from a long line of artists and you'll find plenty of information on them in the cottage. We will definitely go again! Thank you Matthew and Pauline for sharing this little piece of heaven =)

Compact but with everything you need
Interesting location up a dark alley but a characterful and well-equipped little house. We were very comfortable there and the downstairs was mercifully cool! The stairs are a real challenge - high steps, uneven stones and steep. We could not have stayed there with our disabled son or any frail old people, or if we had been frail ourselves. There is no mention of this in the details on the website. You really should make it clear to avoid guests turning up who can't manage the stairs.

What a delightful property!
Cucuron is such a jewel of a village, and it was a real privilege to be able to stay in a traditional property in one of its tiny, secret winding streets. Excellent instructions and map provided by the owners - highly necessary as a visitor would struggle to find "Le Point" without them - Cucuron a gorgeous maze. You can't park at the property but we didn't find that a problem as there are plenty of places to park in the village. Property clean, well maintained, with all the facilities that one might require. Lovely comfortable double bed. Little terrace at the rear of the property a lovely place to eat, drink, read and chill. The paintings and murals are a delight. Owners have provided a comprehensive collection of maps and guides, and their own list of suggested things to do - I think we did them all. Strongly recommend the ice cream parlour near the Etang de la Bonde (L'Art de Glacier), and the hill fort - Buoux. We enjoyed the markets in Cucuron itself and at Lourmarin (rather more touristy, but in a good way). We dined at La Petite Maison (posh) and the Restaurant de L'Etang (neighbourhood), and enjoyed both very much in their different ways. We enjoyed loafing about by the etang and just having a drink too, and watching the people. And we were delighted with the huge number of cats that wander about the village eager to be stroked. The only people to whom I would not recommend this property are those with impaired mobility, as the steps between the ground floor (bedroom and bathroom level) and the first floor (kitchen, living room and terrace level) are very steep. We christened them "Jack's Rake" after the Lake District climb. I would be cautious with toddlers for the same reason. I have every intention of returning to le Point at the earliest opportunity.

Excellent stay at Le Point
Absolutely delighted with Le Point and really enjoyed our week in Cucuron, a little town not at all touristy, that we know well. Le Point has everything we needed for a very comfortable holiday...nothing to find fault with and everything just right. Particularly appreciated the internet radio (although the Brexit result on the 23rd was a bit of a "oh dear" moment! But that wasn't Le Point's fault!!) Would recommend Le Point to anyone, we already have done so. Great place, keep up the good work! John

We are based in Surrey, UK. The house has been in the family since my grandmother restored it during the 1970s. We have updated it over the last few years with a new kitchen, washing machine and wifi but we have kept its character as a medieval village house. A friend in the village looks after it for us when we are not there - she deals with laundry, cleaning and any issues that might arise. Please don't hesitate to phone or email us if there is any further information we can help with.

What makes this property unique
