The combination of a large private pool and a sandy beach almost at the end of the garden is ideal. Therefore a property within easy walking distance of Almyrida is always number 1 on our guest's wish list. It is rare, however, to find one encircled by greenery, with an exceptionally large pool, and with budget prices. We are therefore delighted to add the Margarita Penthouse and Gatehouse to our portfolio because we are sure that it will be a much requested property for many years to come.

It would be an understatement to say that the Margarita Penthouse and Gatehouse has an idyllic location - a three minute leisurely stroll out of the garden gates takes you to Almyrida's child friendly beach where golden sand shelves gently into pristine turquoise waters. The horseshoe shaped beach and small fishing harbour are lined with quaint tavernas and cafes that invite you to do nothing more taxing than sit down and gaze out over the sparkling crystal clear sea whilst enjoying a cool drink and a delicious meal made from fresh produce that has been grown, raised, or caught locally. Add to this the seascape of pretty fishing boats, and the colourful sails of the catamarans and windsurfers from the village's water sports centre during the day, and the twinkling lights from the Akrotiri peninsula across the bay at night, it is easy to see why so many of our guests come back here year after year. Many tell us that a big part of the great appeal of the village is that it is so safe and friendly so they can happily chill out in their accommodation whilst their teenagers wander out to the village on their own.

Ideal for large groups, or families of different generations who like to be independent, the Margarita Penthouse and Gatehouse is a delightful retreat that belies the fact that it is only a 225m flat walk from the beach and many amenities in Almyrida. In low season when the penthouse can be rented without the gatehouse, and the gatehouse can be rented separately without the use of the pool. Our low prices make this property easily accessible to couples and small families who want good value. Planted with mature trees and shrubs including apricot, lemon (perfect for your gin and tonic!), hibiscus, olive, roses, eucalyptus, oleander and mulberry - the beautiful 2700m2 grounds have a truly Mediterranean feel and are a riot of colour in the summer months. The thoughtful owner, Giorgos, has even added an area with a vegetable and herb garden from which his guests can pick fresh produce including juicy tomatoes and sweet red peppers when they are in season.

The pool terrace is paved and a real sun trap. The garden's tall trees provide some natural shade in addition to the umbrellas and oleander covered pergola. The 100m2 pool is for the private use of the penthouse guests (and also the gatehouse guests when it is booked together with the penthouse - as is standard during most of the season). Much larger than average, this wonderful pool is ideal for those of you who really like to swim (being 14m long in one section) but it also includes a separate shallow area for young children, or for adults who are not confident in the water but still love to take a refreshing dip on a hot summer's day.

Steps lead up from the pool terrace and well established gardens to a covered side balcony from where the penthouse is entered. Light and airy, and spacious in the extreme, the Margarita Penthouse is 190m2 and covers the entire top floor of an older style apartment building. The ground floor is occupied by the lovely owner, at times his sister, and a lady tenant who works locally and is not usually there during the day. The peace and quiet of the penthouse guests is thus assured.

This well laid out accommodation lends itself perfectly to relaxed summer living and is both comfortable and welcoming. Recently updated there is cheerful decor and many modern amenities including: a fully fitted kitchen with built-in ceramic hob and oven, a microwave oven, a toaster, a kettle and a coffee maker; fully tiled modern bathrooms – one of which houses a washing machine and a hair dryer; digital TV in the living room, a DVD player, free WIFI internet access, and wooden doors, window frames and shutters. In consideration of the environment, the water is heated either by solar panel or a back-up immersion heater. For added comfort each of the 4 bedrooms has air-conditioning. The A/C units also double up as heaters for the cooler nights at the start and end of the season. Three of the four bedrooms have patio doors that open out onto balconies. The principal bedroom doors and the wide living room patio doors lead out onto the wrap-around sun-terrace which overlooks the pool and front garden to the White Mountains, and is quite simply a superb place to catch some rays, read a book, or relax and enjoy a meal.

As the name suggests, the gatehouse is a small detached 2 storey house that is located at the entrance to the property (at the opposite end of the pool terrace to the penthouse). Independently accessed, the gatehouse will be of particular interest to grandparents, teenagers, or anyone seeking an added degree of privacy while still being very much part of the family holiday. The penthouse and completely self-contained gatehouse rent as one property except in April and October. During the low season the penthouse and gatehouse can also be rented separately at lower prices but the pool is then not available for the use of the gatehouse guests. With a living room with a sofa bed, and a kitchen on the ground floor, and a shower room and double bedroom on the top floor the gatehouse is well equipped and can sleep up to 4 persons.

Our more active guests will find that things to do are by no means in short supply. Whilst the beach in Almyrida is a only few minutes on foot and fishing is permitted from the harbour dock. There are many walking trails and cycle tracks, and we can arrange pedalos, windsurfing, kayaking, catamaran sailing, scuba diving, horse riding, boat trips, private boat hire, water skiing, big game fishing, private sightseeing flights, and a number of coach excursions for you. The surrounding villages offer glass blowing, lace making, archaeological sites, and beautiful scenery, whilst the magnificent gorges, mountains, and stunning towns of Chania and Rethymnon are within easy reach by car.

Margarita Penthouse and Gatehouse is a rare find that combines a very large pool, spacious budget accommodation, and mature gardens just a stone's throw away from a sandy beach, shops and tavernas. We highly suggest that you book up early before it is too late and you miss out on this excellent property!

Margarita is exclusively booked by Frankie Miles. Frankie runs Villas Crete Holidays which is a registered Tourist Office, based in Hampshire, England and Almyrida, Crete. Whilst most travel companies/agencies cover many different countries and/or areas of Greece and Crete, we at Villas Crete Holidays only work in the North West of Crete and we specialise in the Apokoranas region, just east of the historic Venetian town of Chania. The Apokoronas (including the villages of Almyrida, Kalives, Kokkino Horio, Plaka and Gavalohori) has long been a popular destination for holiday makers seeking a typically Greek seaside resort area that has many amenities, but is far removed from brash tourism. The area is renowned for its sandy beaches, crystal clear turquoise water, stunning views of Souda Bay and The White Mountains, excellent tavernas, and many archaeological sites.

With such a short and easy flat walk to all of the amenities you can go to the beach or shops at any time, and you can go to have a delicious meal and a drink (or two) next to the sea without worrying about driving home.

Almyrida is such a safe and family friendly village, that parents can relax at Margarita Penthouse and Gatehouse knowing that their teenagers and older children can go into the village on their own to have fun without a problem.

The separate Gatehouse gives family members who like to be a little more private the option to do so. Margarita is one of the first properties in Almyrida and therefore has a mature garden which is very unusual. It also have the advantage of having a much larger than average pool because newer properties, that have been built since more regulations and taxes have been introduced, have to have smaller and shallow pools.

For travellers on a budget, Margarita Penthouse and Gatehouse is ideal. You do not have to rent a car when staying here, though we do recommend it if you want to see some of Crete's incredible sights and attractions.

The heart of the village of Almyrida is only 225m flat walk from the Margarita Penthouse, and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 11 tavernas, 6 cafés, 2 bars, 2 bakeries, 2 ice cream shops, 1 jewellery shop, 4 mini-markets, 7 gift shops, an off-license/liquor store, a pharmacy, a butcher's shop, an organic fruit and vegetable shop with a deli counter, a nail spa, a body and wellness spa, 1 kiosk, and 3 real estate offices. Also in Almyrida there are pedalo rentals, a centre with pool tables and a variety of games machines, a scuba diving centre, a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans, and Villas Crete Holidays for tourist information, private boat hire, boat trips, horse riding, private sight-seeing flights, big game fishing, and guided walking tours and coach excursions.

A few minutes by car from the Margarita Penthouse, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, lace makers in Gavalohori, and silk makers in Kalamitsi. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 35 minutes away by car.

Guests receive a free welcome pack, a villa information book, and detailed directions from the guide book 'Crete on the Road' by Frankie Miles. A local representative is available during office hours and 24/7 assistance is available for medical emergencies.

We ask for a deposit of 20% on villas with a total rental price of 1000.00 Euros or more, and 200.00 Euros for villas with a total rental price of less than 1000.00 Euros, with the final balance paid 10 weeks before your arrival date. If you book 10 weeks or less before the booking we require full payment at the time of booking. We accept payments via bank transfer, personal Visa or Mastercard.
