Treehouse of a thousand fragrances

  • 5 of 5

Words can’t express the energy of this beautiful Treehouse oasis. Upon arrival you will smell rich floral fragrance as you head upstairs to the space. We felt comfortable and relaxed during our stay. The sounds of birds and roosters in the morning was both lovely and quite funny. (These roosters have no sense in time and crow pretty much whenever they please) ... the tiny lizards make their presence from time to time...don’t leave candy sitting out because they will most likely be indulging on the sweet sugary goodness and you might not notice when you go in for a piece! (Haha!)

There’s a coffee shop up the road called DaKine coffee...the people who own it are wonderful and have great advice on places to go and things to do. Plus the coffee and food are delicious!

All in all Sandia’s place was magickal. Enjoy seeing the sun set over the ocean on the balcony during your stay! Aloha!

In one word: MAGICAL.

  • 5 of 5

This is a spacious magical haven in the flowering treetops with stunning views, the fragrance of flowers and the song of birds, frogs ..and roosters! Sleep with a view of the stars and awaken in a bed with an 180 -degree view across treetops lifting in the soft breezes dancing with birds from the sunrise over the shoulder of the volcano to the blue Pacific. Crazy beautiful! With this view a rare intense rainstorm is better than any film. A huge lanai with ocean and sunset views. A wild jungle garden graced with a wide and beautiful variety of trees and flowers and avocado, lemons, bananas, more. This is sweet, kind, generous land. It was a continuous contribution to me. I am so grateful that I chose this potent place and received the gifts of being here. If you stay here, please give the garden a kiss from me!

Sacred Treehouse~Purely Magical with Glorious Fragrant Gardens and Sounds of Nature all around...

  • 5 of 5

If you desire peace~tranquility~beautiful gardens~being serenaded by the sweet melodies of the Hawaiian Birds , then this Magical Garden Haven Mapuna is for you...It is off the beaten path, comfortable~casual and away from the hustle~bustle of Kailua Town. There is a large outdoor lanai for dining, luxuriating in nature, journaling and meditating. It is located near two very famous bays, which are important landmarks for the island. There is great snorkeling~observing and swimming with the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins.

May your stay be as blessed as mine always is!!!

Beautiful Big Island Mapuana Stay

  • 5 of 5

I had a relaxing, beautiful stay at Mapuana surrounded by beautiful trees and flowering plants. I loved the gentle morning breezes, the songs of the birds in the morning and the sounds of nature in the evening,.

After wonderful adventures in the ocean. Kealakekua Bay, Manini Beach Park and Two Step at City of Refuge , so close and appealing, Mapuana is a lovely peaceful sanctuary to come home to.

Poorly maintained- needs some serious improvements

  • 2 of 5

The spot of this place on the Kona coast would be perfect, in the middle between Volcano and some perfect beaches. Too bad that this flat is so poorly organised and maintained: one can sense that the owner lives on another island! Nothing but finding the place was somewhat difficult, as there were no instructions on the VRBO website. The roadway is slippery due to rotten leaves nobody is sweeping. The balcony again was full of rotting leaves, remnants left by cats and large spider webs. When we entered, the kitchen was full of moths- which turned out not to be an issue as a gecko very efficiently feasted on them. The biggest issue finally was the bed: the mattress completely at the end of its lifespan, and my wife preferred her sleeping bag rather than touching the moist linen.

We did like the location and the shower, but stayed on the tips of our toes most of the time (and eventually left a day early)

Owner's Response: Aloha, i am sorry that our vacation apt. did not meet your expectations . A more appropriate place for your expectations to be met would have been a condo or hotel that provides enough ongoing maintenance that you would not see dry leaves or spiders or geckos. In a tropical setting ,such as ours,.we live amongst creatures , that are not harmful, but are very present. For example, the spiders when removed come back quickly . They are not harmful and consume many unwanted insects as do the geckos. Many people love the beautiful green geckos A photo of the gecko is on our vrbo site Our vacation spot is loved by many precisely because it is in a tropical setting with many trees, vines and flowers.. Because of that, As soon as it rains, there are leaves on the driveway , despite being swept frequently. What you described as a balcony is actually a roof and not meant to a balcony, There is a lovely outdoor sitting area instead, which is a covered lanai. Many people have enjoyed and commented favorably on what a lovely setting the covered lanai is with a view of jacaranda trees, monkey pods, orchid trees . It is covered and therefor cannot have leaves on it I am sorry you did not read my detailed directions to Mapuana as it would have saved you any difficulty,It included my phone number and I was available in the event you had any difficulty finding our place . This is a tropical climate and many guests are not familiar with this atmosphere , which is why some guests seek new experiences and some others are not comfortable with the change. Our bedding is absolutely washed and dried for each new guest and I have had no previous complains about the bed or bedding. In reading your review, I realize once again, having a more climate controlled atmosphere, like a condo or hotel would have been more suitable.. I am indeed sorry, Mapuana did not meet your needs

Superb garden and vibe :) - not so good separation from neighbours :(

  • 3 of 5

I am somewhat torn between the pros and cons of this accommodation. All that has been listed before me is true: yes, this place has magical surroundings, it is wonderful that it is so open to nature, which of course means you will meet geckos (loved them), roaches and mosquitos (it's Hawaii, so that's how it is :)), and hear the sound of birds and coqui frogs day and night (loved them, for us it was soothing!). It is also true that the accommodation is not super-clean in all corners, but this was not what we really had problems to get used to (as long kitchen + bathroom + sheets are all clean, it's fine, and they of course were), but the practically no separation from our neighbour. That is something you cannot really find a good excuse for - all it would take is two good doors instead of the current ones, of which one is a sliding door (from the neighbours' side), and the other is one with a shutter and no threshold (from our bedroom's side). This means we could basically hear anything that went on in the neghbourhood day and night, and it was sometimes really, really disturbing. :( It could be solved so simply with better doors, and then it would be a five star accommodation! But I want to end with something positive: we loved the enlighted staircase that leads up to the flat from the purely wonderful garden, the furnishing, and the proximity of the Kealakekua Bay. Sandia's instructions were very clearly given, so we found the place easily, and she was also fast with communication.

About Sandia Siegel

I am an Artist and love beauty. I believe my vacation rental reflects that. I have lived in other tropical locations and have surrounded Mapuana with amazing tropical foliage and flowering trees.

Mapuana means wind blown fragrance in Hawaiian and it is the fragrance that greets the guests who grace us by staying at our site.

Why Sandia Siegel chose Captain Cook

Kealakekua drew me here with its natural beauty. Nothing compares to the bays here with easy access to oceann life including dolphins, turtles and whales. The feeling of Aloha resonates here and I was drawn here to live a natural life. Its truly the 'real' Hawaii.

What makes this apartment unique

The feel of being in a real part of Hawaii is evident in our location. Kealakekua Bay is minutes away with much Hawaiian history, great snorkeling and the presence of dolphins, turtles and tropical fish.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Aloha Sandia!

We are in pure bliss here in your exquisite "Tree house" pushing up into the heavens!  We arrived after as it was getting dark last night (Thursday) and quietly got ourselves settled.  We had such a great time doing an art tour of all your eclectic and fantastic pieces.  WE LOVE IT HERE!

We had a magical sunset yoga time on the lanai this evening and are enjoying the camaraderie of

all our gecko friends.  We are being very aware of the bamboo floors and treating all your treasures with much deserved reverence.

We hope to meet you someday soon.  If you are on island and around it would be wonderful to have a quick visit.  Otherwise, we just thank you and feel so blessed to be here for our much belated honeymoon!
