Overview

Photos and Description of this holiday barn in Cornwall - The Old Stable

Studio Barn very close to the beach

Just yards from the beach in this tranquil, quintessential Cornish fishing village, an enchanting detached stone studio. Close to beautiful coastal walks leading around the Lizard peninsula and along the shoreline of the Helford River. Full of character with a mezzanine double bed area enjoying glimpses of the sea, kitchenette, living area and a shower/utility room, packing everything one would need into a perfectly formed space. Ideally located with a tranquil part of Cornwall yet close proximity to the Helford River, Helston, Lizard Peninsula. Nearby attractions include Goonhilly, Trelowarren, Roskilly's and local diving at Polkerris.

Great for short or long breaks away from the city. Ideal for those who want quiet break away from the hustle and bustle of work and traffic noise.

From the Cornish meaning 'port at the end of the moor', Porthallow's history has always been inextricably linked with the sea. A former thriving Pilchard port, small fishing boats are still hauled onto the beach to this day. A number of buildings in the village also exhibit tell tale signs of the industry, if a little less obvious to the casual observer - The Association's Institute building is sighted over a former pilchard cellar!

Set in the heart of the small fishing village of Porthallow with the beach is just a few minutes' walk away. The South West Coast Path is just 50 metres from the studio, offering excellent coastal views across Falmouth Bay to St. Anthony's Head, and a beautiful walk to Gillan Creek and the Helford River. Porthallow beach is used by local fishermen, and it is possible to drive onto the beach to launch canoes and dinghies. The local pub, The Five Pilchards, offers a warm welcome to visitors and there is a craft shop with locally made pottery. The village shops in St Keverne, just a couple of miles away, offer comprehensive supplies. The local wildlife is abundant, with buzzards circling over the valley and seals occasionally visiting the bay. The Old Stable is in probably one of the most peaceful spots in Cornwall, and offers the opportunity for a truly relaxing holiday by the sea.

Ode to The Old Stable

From Pralla's Old Stable, I was certainly able

To enjoy a whole week, exploring Mullion to Gweek. Around all Lizard's coast, I can defnitely boast, Many miles of walking and scenic recording.

But knowing each day, a good place to stay,

The Old Stable cosy and, when I felt dozy,

A comfy warm bed, to lay down my head,

This was all I could ask for.....

I'll be back for more!

Cozy Cottage

  • 5 of 5

I enjoyed this tiny cottage walking distance from the sea. It's a little on the rustic side. The location is remote and beautiful. Loved the sky light over the bed. I would make sure your cleaner checks under the bed every time they clean. I found some things.

If you make toast the smoke alarm will go off! The Old Stable is so unique and it felt like home right away.

Really loved walking to The Five Pilchards for dinner. It's a great pub with horses outside and dogs inside. The food was fresh and delicious with great service.

Little gem

  • 4 of 5

A beautifully compact and well arranged little jewel. Perfect for a few nights of complete relaxation & escape. Has everything you require, close to the beach and with a lovely little pub on the doorstep. Oh if only British weather could deliver as consistent a service.....

Beautiful place!

  • 4 of 5

I booked this place for a long weekend for my girlfriend and I, we were both very pleased when we got there.

The old stables cottage is very pretty inside and out, it's quite small, but very cosy. I would recommend that it would be for no more than 2 people and both under 6 foot tall as the bathroom and shower can be a bit of a squeeze. As we are both under 5.7" it was perfect. The kitchenette has the basics, kettle, toaster, microwave& fridge, we were happy with toast and cereal for breakfast, but would have loved a bacon sandwich.

maybe a single electric plug in hob would be an idea. Look forward to hopefully staying here again and maybe a bit longer next time.

The village of Porthallow is very peaceful, quiet and very picturesque, though a bit isolated. The pub was very welcoming and serves great food and local ales, the beach

is shingle and pebbles with the water looking very clear and almost drinkable, lol.

All in all I would say it's a great place to be based, we spent most of our time visiting the the harbours and other villages but nice to come back to at the end of the day.

Cosy Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We booked this place mainly due to the price, as we were planning to spend most of the trip elsewhere. Therefore, we weren't expecting much... However, the cottage was lovely! It was clean, warm and cosy and the location was wonderful. The first night, we arrived in the dark and went to the local pub for food. They were very welcoming and the food and beer was great. The next morning, we saw Porthallow in the light and loved it! The cove was a great place to start and end each day. We would certainly recommend this place to anyone heading down that way.
