BlueberryBlues is a three bedroom, two bath Contemporary located on a wooded lot near the West Chop Woods. Wild blueberry bushes carpet the land. Love of bluefish suggested the name BlueberryBlues. Four cultivated blueberry bushes are trying to root and provide fruit. A spacious wrap-around deck, veiled by rhododendron, surround the front and side of the house. Two bedroom and one bath are located on the first floor. The second floor is comprised of a third bedroom, bath and loft with private deck. All rooms open to the great room. With three sliding glass doors and cathedral ceilings the ambiance is bright and airy. Kitchen and laundry appliances are all new including flat-top stove and front loading washer and dryer.
Stockade fencing around the back yard ensures privacy for you and safety for children. Lets you relax while they play. The murals in the 'Fish Room' of the 'Blueberry Bluefish' a mermaid and many denizens of the deep were created by island artist Enos Ray.
Other works of his are located inside and outside the house including the number sign at the end of the driveway! For those who barbecue there are both gas and charcoal grills. Umbrella and patio furniture for six make for comfortable outdoor living on the deck. Kids can enjoy lunch or play games on the picnic table in the back yard. Your family will find BlueberryBlues a comfortable restful and playful place to vacation.
The photo is of one of my five sons and two of his 5 children! They were spending some vacation time with Nan Kathy. I am a senior and live on island full time. June through September I move out and rent a room from a friend. This gives me a unique experience of being a renter! I've been doing this since I purchased the property. I'm a retired RN. My sons all live off island in Massachusetts, Raleigh, NC and North Myrtle Beach, SC.
I try to visit them and my 9 grandchildren whenever possible.
Kathleen Phillips purchased this house in 1997
When my sons where young our summer vacation was spent at Webb's camping area. (no longer there) After they were grown I had the opportunity to buy the property in Vineyard Haven. I still have a house in Needham and it's a wonderful town. It doesn't, however, have the ocean and the feel of the island. As a single senior I feel safe on island. I can walk to town or the library to the ocean and the West Chop Lighthouse. The house is comfortable for one or seven. The back yard is completely fenced in. It keeps the turkeys out and young children in!
Every year I try to add more to the garden. I enjoy the yard and even the yard work! The deck is large and wraps around the side and front of the house. There is also a small deck off the loft upstairs and so it seems that there are places on the property to read a book.
The great room with it's vaulted ceilings and wall of windows makes a wonderful gathering area. Even if you're on kitchen duty you can still join in on the conversation or watch TV. The 2 bedrooms with queen beds are on the first floor with full bath. A small bedroom the "fish room" is on the second floor a bathroom and laundry. The second floor has a loft that opens onto a small deck. People love the full futon. I'm not sure why. It has a futon the is too thick to fold back into a couch. You could try:) The property is far enough out of town that you can enjoy peace and quiet but only 5 minutes away from the ferry, grocery store, shopping, restaurants, library, and the ocean. At times you can hear the ferry or fog horn. Great area to walk or bike. Check out the location on the map!
We had an absolutely fabulous time staying at Blueberry Blues in Vineyard Haven! Kathy's home is just what we needed for a great vacation. She made us feel right at home. Renting a house gave us the flexibility to come and go and make our own schedule for our week. No worrying about being out before maid service, eating out all the time and sharing a small space. Kathy's home is well appointed, loaded with bedrooms and has everything you need. We stayed with our two children upstairs. Us in the loft and the two boys in the bedroom on the single beds. They were right near us (they are still small - 2 and 5) and we could keep an eye on them. There were two unused bedrooms downstairs with 3 other beds! If we could have convinced either of our sets of parents to come we would have had enough space. There is a great run from the house down to a resort area that is right on the water. Only a couple of miles. I enjoyed the run several times. We looped the island with the boys in the car several times and visited each city. Overall, one of the best vacations we've had - hands down! Thank you Kathy! When we stay in Marta's Vineyard, we hope to stay at Blueberry Blues again. :)
Advice: Don't lug tons of groceries with you! The Stop & Shop on the island was not terribly far and the prices were not as outrageous as we feared. There are also MANY places to pick up fresh seafood and an outdoor market with fresh veggies close to the house on Saturdays. Kitchen has everything you will need as well. We grilled quite a bit as well.
DO - go to Gay Head, take lots of pictures and hit the Dreamcatcher for lunch. Best clams ever! We tried several places - went back to the Dreamcatcher on our last day. It's a walk up place and everything from there is delicious.
hit Menemsha for ice cream, a great beach day and lots of lobster bisque. Shopping is best in Oak Bluffs.
Every beach was better than the next - however, for us, the best one for the little ones was near Shark Beach (were Jaws was filmed). They have a little creek that runs between the ocean and an inlet and the boys played for HOURS there.
Just writing this makes me want to book another trip! Enjoy your stay!
Our family just returned from our first vacation to Martha's Vineyard. It was also the first time we used HomeAway.
We stayed at BlueberryBlues and loved the house, the location, and the owner!
First impressions are so important and my first impression with Kathy was positive. She promptly answered my questions and concerns. I felt that she was interested in making sure we were comfortable before we even arrived!
The pictures and information listed on the website were perfect! When we arrived I felt like I already knew the house! We were so impressed with how well appointed the house was for accommodating the whole family!
Kathy had books and brochures handy for us to look through to help plan out activities for the week. We used this info for our walks and trip around the island to explore.
Kathy made us feel that her home was ours for the week. She sent us a welcome text and even asked us if she could come by one day to mow the lawn. This made us feel more comfortable coming and going each day.
BlueberryBlues was the perfect location for our family. It was convenient to the beaches and shops. We chose to drive to the beach since parking was free. Each day we explored a different beach and we loved each one.
The neighborhood was quiet and perfect for families. We enjoyed sitting on the deck at night with the blue lights shining down on us. This was the perfect touch for a house called BlueberryBlues!
I just can't say enough about what a great week we had during our stay at BlueberryBlues. We wanted to try something different this year and are so glad we did!
We definitely will be back next year!
Thank you to Kathy for letting us enjoy your home!
See you next year! 😃
I spent a week at Martha's Vineyard with my family and friends. Total, there were 6 of us. The bedrooms were spacious, clean, and very homey and allowed for us to have a nice and comfortable stay. We spent a week at BlueberryBlues and really enjoyed our time. The house is quaint and colorful and came with special bonuses we weren't even expecting: there were a few used bikes in the shed that after some tweaking, we were able to use and save money on bike rentals, the grill came in very handy as we grilled almost every night, and the kitchen was nicely equipped with brand new pots and pans!
The location is close to many shops and our favorite destinations: Net Result (great seafood and clam chowder), Mocha Mott's (delicious chai tea), and Artcliff Diner (best place for brunch)! We had so much fun and during our 1-week stay, we were able to visit all the major destinations on the island. Kathy, the owner, is extremely nice and hospitable -- her warm welcome made our stay just that much more enjoyable. She was even kind enough to rent her home out to us for memorial weekend, which she usually doesn't do! This place is amazing and I definitely recommend anyone wanting to spend time at Martha's to stay here! We will be back!
Thanks again Kathy!!! :)
My cousins and I rented Blue Berry Blues to make attending a family wedding that much more fun, convenient and affordable than simply booking a hotel room. The house is superb, with so many ameneties. We were so comfortable there that a couple of nights we just stayed in and enjoyed the deck and back yard. Kathy was so very nice and made us feel right at home during our first visit to MV! The neighborhood is nice and quite, and a very short bike ride to downtown Vineyard Haven. We would definitely recommend Blue Berry Blues to our friends and hope that we will be able to stay here again the next time we visit the island! -Ian
This was our first stay at BlueberryBlues, and we are already talking about going back. In fact, we did not want to leave! Kathy, the owner, is a kind woman that treats you like family. She takes great pride in her home, which has lots of character and great custom artwork inside and out. The location on the island is fantastic! It is in northern Vineyard Haven, close to center of town, but in a nice quiet residential neighborhood that is very private and peaceful. Great yard for the kids to play, great wrap around deck (with great flowers/decorations from Kathy), nice open and spacious intererior with lots of windows. We loved going to the beach at Lake Tashmoo which has both lake and ocean in one locations, beautiful place. We enjoyed the trek getting to that beach, on a dirt road carved out of the rugged forest, which puts your car to the test, this journey to and from the beach was an adventure that we and our children will never forget.
My family and I have been staying at Blue Berry Blues every Summer for the past 8 years. This is a great place to stay for a family as it's cozy, comfortable, clean and welcoming. My children think that it's our summer home and the owner is a relative. We love this house so much because its' just the right size for a family of 4 with a couple of additional guests. This year my family and I are visiting for 2 weeks vs the standard week and we're all so excited.
I wish this were our Summer home and hope one day the Owner will either will it to the family or sell it really cheap!! LOL.
In the mean time as we wait for either of the above, we will continue to visit god willing every Summer. It's a home away from home!!
The town of Vineyard Haven with the ferry, shops, movie theatre, library, restaurants, and Owen Little Beach are less than a mile away. For those who like to hike and bike this area is perfect. The West Chop Woods 0.1 mile away is a lovely area to explore with trails and winding paths. If you'd like a daily walk or jog, the West Chop Lighthouse is a mile down the road. There's a one mile loop at the end of West Chop and then it's a mile home. On the loop is an ocean park where you can stop and rest or watch the sunset as the ferry sails by. The Beach at Lake Tashmoo is located a mile down a dirt road. It's a wonderful family beach for swimming or fishing. Lake Tashmoo is a safe area to practice your kayaking skills before you head out into the Atlantic Ocean. Within this same mile radius you'll find Mink Meadows a nine hole golf course. During the summer months the Vineyard Transit Authority has a bus that will pick you up at the end of the street and take you into Vineyard Haven.
