About us. Petr and I met in Dutch Harbor, Alaska in the early 80's. We heard about some remote property near Petersburg, and built our rock house three miles from town. We hiked and skiffed for 16 years before there was road access to Frederick Point. Fast Forward. I am an aide at Stedman Elementary school and Petr does custom metal fabrication on fishing boats. The Lucky Loon is .2 mile from our house and we share the same fabulous view.
Louise purchased this house in 2004
Living on the waters of Frederick Sound provides endless entertainment from the birds and marine mammals that pass by daily. When our good friends decided to sell their custom home and 'sail away' we knew it was a great opportunity to share our unique location with travelers from all over the world.
The best part about living here: Seeing whales and marine life from the comfort of the living room. Listening to the sea lions hauled out on the rocks under Horn Cliffs from the deck. It's hard to get anything done ...you might miss a visiting mink, a passing seal or a jumping silver salmon. We live in a rain forest archipelago that is still pristine and overwhelmingly beautiful.
Petersburg is a lovely place…quiet, charming and most of all no cruise ships!
This was our third visit and this time I was looking for a house to rent, since we were taking our two grandkids, who are almost 12. The Lucky Loon seemed to be the perfect place and it was. The scenery from the living room was spectacular! The accommodations great with two kids, since it gave us our space too…especially after a long day!
We came by ferry from Bellingham, Washington and Louise was so gracious in picking us up at the ferry terminal. We opted not to rent a car and found it very easy to get around without one. We used City Cab when we needed to get into town and they were great…very friendly, as were all the locals.
One day we walked to Sandy Beach at low tide, in search of the petroglyphs. Didn’t find them but the kids collected lots of shells. We had a great picnic and then discovered a wonderful trail to take us back to the Lucky Loon…The City Creek Trail! It is a must! I called it, "The Enchanted Forest". I am a hiker and I have never seen anything like it! The beauty of all the moss and unusual mushrooms, made it the most Enchanted Forest I had ever walked through.
Louise had suggested the kids fish off the pier in Petersburg…mainly just for fun. They had a blast, catching a few herring and a halibut each… in the two days that they fished. That was part of the enticement to go to Alaska…so they each brought their poles and other fishing gear.
Petr came to visit one evening to check our water supply. He and my husband had a nice talk. I am sorry we didn’t get to spend more time with Louise and Petr…Next time!
Almost every day Louise would give us an update on the passing whales or the ones that had passed and we had missed.
My most surprising visitor greeted me the first morning as we were having coffee on the deck. Out of the corner of my eye something brown jumped on the railing next to me and then onto the table in front of me, only to give this loud screech when he discovers me sitting there. Just as quickly, he jumps over the railing into the ferns below. I thought…What was that! A few mornings later almost at the same time, I go out by the kitchen and on my return hear the screech again…This time I saw my mystery friend…It was a squirrel!
Thank you Louise and Petr for the most spectacular time ever…In Paradise! Most of all...Thanks for all the TLC and special things you did for us. I am sure we will return…
Lucky Loon is without question the nicest spot to stay in Petersburg. The view is spectacular and the accommodation is very clean and comfortable.
This was my second time to stay at the Lucky Loon and it was just an fabulous as the first time. This property has EVERYTHING anyone could desire. The views from the wrap-around porch are amazing. Louise and Petr are fantastic hosts. They will do almost anything to make a person's stay spectacular. Be prepared to see whales, seals, deer, porcupine, eagles, sea lions, and all kinds of birds right at the cabin. If you time it right, you can even pick fresh berries for your breakfast. YUM! The town of Petersburg is not a tourist town. It is wonderful retreat from the hustle and bustle of life. You get a feel for what living in a fishing community is all about. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this property and about Petersburg. No one will be disappointed.
We just returned from a month traveling in Alaska. A highlight of our trip was the week we spent at the Luck Loon. The views out onto the water from the cabin were spectacular. We enjoyed staying in Petersburg since we did not have to share it with giant cruise line ships.
Our family (2 adults, 2 teens and a child) stayed at Lucky Loon for 5 nights in May 2015. Practicalities aside - given that everything you could possibly desire was provided - this was an amazing retreat; leisurely mornings, busy days along the shore and on the water, quiet meals and breathtaking views. We enjoyed seals, whales, nesting and fishing eagles, and every manner of bird and tidal creature we could imagine.
For us it was a homecoming, but for a visitor it would be a rare glimpse into the true heart of Alaska.
We have just returned to Australia after two months travelling through Alaska and Canada. The Lucky Loon was without a doubt the best place we stayed during the entire time. The setting is incredibly beautiful, and as other reviewers have said, the photos really don't do it justice. The view from the deck to the snow-capped mountains opposite is breathtaking, and you have it all to yourself! The house feels like a home rather than a rental, everything is of good quality, and I would love to live in such a house permanently. Louise was especially accommodating when we booked, and she and Petr were good company when we were there! We felt we gained a little more insight into this unique part of the world through them. Our kids also loved it. Petersburg itself is a great little town, perfect combination of neither too touristy nor too isolated. We visited most of the Inside Passage towns when we were in the region - in some others we always felt like just another tourist, while in Petersburg people seemed genuinely interested in us. We also did a kayak trip to the Le Conte Glacier with Scott from Tongass Kayak, once again we had the place to ourselves it was a much more magical experience than either Glacier Bay or the Mendenhall Glacier at Juneau. I can't recommend The Lucky Loon highly enough, and really hope to go back - my nine-year-old is promising she will get us back there one day! Thank you Louise and Petr.
Scenic small town that is not overrun with tour ships. Petersburg has a rich Norwegian heritage and a long history of commercial fishing. Excellent Bird Viewing, especially in May and June, including many sightings of the Yellow-Billed Loon.
