Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Saint Andrews

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Looking to rent a vacation house in St Andrews, the Home of Golf?

The Vintage... A 2-iron away from the 1st tee of the Old Course.

The ideal self-catering vacation rental accommodation in the heart of St Andrews, Scotland.

Located within the Conservation area of St Andrews and surrounded by historic houses, just 200 yards from the Old Course and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, 100 yards from the seafront and close to the ruins of the Castle and the centre of town.

The Vintage is a delightful, free-standing, fully renovated, three bedroom house for rent with a large conservatory, offering 130 square meters of comfortable living space including a fully equipped kitchen, living room, and two bathrooms.

The house has a distinct homely feel about it with natural wood finishes, parquet flooring and a contemporary interior design.

The Conservatory measures 27 square meters and can comfortably seat 10 at a large antique table. Its French double doors open up to the tastefully landscaped patio-garden which surrounds the house.

With no direct access for cars, (Gillespie Wynd connects the seafront Scores with North Street and offers access only to pedestrians) the only noise one hears is the wind and the occasional seagull flying overhead.

A day in St Andrews

MORNING: play the most important eighteen in the world, The Old Course.

LUNCH: enjoy a traditional American cheeseburger and a pint of Ale in the famous golfer’s corner lounge bar of the Dunvegan Hotel, only a 9-iron away from the 18th green. (depending on the wind)

AFTERNOON: tee off on the New Course, (1875) a course every bit as challenging as the Old Course.

EARLY EVENING: take a walk along the shore and visit the ancient graves of Old and Young Tom Morris near the ruins of the Cathedral.

DINNER: enjoy a memorable dinner at the Peat Inn, considered one of the finest restaurants in Scotland and be looked after by the husband and wife team Geoffrey and Katherine Smeddle.

(book well in advance)

AFTER DINNER: walk the 1st and 18th fairway of the Old Course, then alongside the illuminated R&A clubhouse, up the Scores, down Gillespie Wynd and back to ‘your home in St Andrews’ - The Vintage, to enjoy a well-deserved nightcap in the patio garden.

St Andrews

An ancient seat of learning with royal connections, this small Scottish town

combines blue-chip golf with charming surroundings

What you are likely to love about it

It’s inclusiveness.

People who know nothing about golf probably assume that the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, the oldest in the world, is the last word in snobbery. Not so.

The famous Old Course at St Andrews is open to all comers and is criss-crossed by public paths, giving it an agreeable democratic air, with children and dog-walkers mingling with golfers.

On a fine summer day it must be one of the most beautiful sporting settings in the world, with a sea breeze stiffening the flags and the beach running along the links.

It makes golf seem suddenly rather romantic, and not just a displacement activity for men in silly pullovers.

Although it is the golf course that makes St Andrews a place of pilgrimage, the ancient university, dating back to the 15th century, would grace any town, with the weather-beaten old collages and shiny, well-scrubbed students.

History is all around, from the ruins of the 12th century cathedral at the eastern edge of the town to the equally dilapidated castle, built a century later.

What you might not necessarily like about it

St Andrews probably boasts the biggest concentration of golfers in Britain.

You cannot move in the town centre in the evening without overhearing talk of bunkers and birdies and fluffed chips. It might get wearing after the first few hours, unless you are an avid golfer yourself.

Golf dominates the shops almost as much as conversation. Even Oxfam has second-hand seven-irons in the window. Other outlets are limited in consequence.

Another blot on the landscape is the fighter jets roaring in and out of RAF Leuchars, drowning out the seagulls.

Text originates from the Daily Telegraph and journalist Max Davidson

Other statements & facts

The weatherman who can predict the weather for the whole day at St Andrews does not exist.

There is a tv camera hidden in the Road Hole bunker.

The train was still running along the 16th fairway from Leuchars when Arnold Palmer first played the Open at St Andrews in 1960.

At his first appearance at the Open in St Andrews, Gary Player spent the night in the dunes, wrapped in his rain gear. He could not afford hotel accommodation.

St Andrews is magical. Nothing like it anywhere in the world.

Great Golf House

  • 5 of 5

We were happy that this cottage was better than the description. The kitchen and dining areas were great and we cooked in all week. We took walks after dinner to watch the golfers come in on the 18th green up until 10 pm. The parking was not a problem and we really enjoyed playing 7 rounds of golfer in the area. Highly recommend this cottage, we would come back again.

Great choice.

  • 5 of 5

We were a small group of 4 golfers for our first visit to St. Andrews this spring. We could not have asked for a better location or property. Great location, well taken care of and perfect for our needs. Not only an easy walk to the Old Course, but 3 minutes to restaurants and Tesco in town for dinners, and grocery shopping. Right around the corner from the Scores. Street parking worked out OK for us, but I could see this could be a concern during busy times.

Wonderful house!

  • 5 of 5

We had 6 adults, golfers and non-golfers, and we all loved the Vintage! It looked exactly the same as the pictures and had great amenities. The bedrooms, lounge area, sun room, and kitchen were accommodating for 3 couples. The location was spectacular! For the golfers, the location can't be beat to the Old Course and other courses. For the non-golfers, everything in town was in walking distance, including the market and tourist attractions. St. Andrews is a lovely walkable town with so many beautiful and interesting sites. The house was so quiet, and we slept great! We loved all of the eating options and explored various restaurants. We would definitely recommend the Vintage to anyone!

Only thing to be aware of is the lack of a clothes dryer, so any laundry requires line drying.

A perfect stay

  • 5 of 5

How wonderful to arrive and find The Vintage exactly as described. There were 4 of us and the house was perfect - enough room for all to spread out and relax when we wanted, the house was fully appointed to insure that we were completely accommodated. The location is ideal - everything in St. Andrews is within walking distance. The recommended restaurants and local tourist spots (as per the full booklet of information our hosts provided) were fabulous.

The house was lovely and very clean - and local help (Liz) was right on top of any questions we had.

As golfers, the proximity to New, Old and Jubilee courses and their pro shops/shopping was ideal. We also played at Crail and Carnoustie, and The Vintage is an ideal location for traveling there. We day-tripped to Edinburgh and even that was much better than having to find a place to stay in Edinburgh for a day or 2.

Regarding restaurants, Little Italy was great - we went twice! Maisha for Indian was outstanding. One of our best meals was right next door at Alexander's - we were the only ones there (guess hotel guests don't want fine dining!) The service was great and the food was amazing. We definitely would have gone back again if we had been in St. Andrews longer. Also, the Balgove Larder is awesome for breakfast and lunch - one of our caddies told us that in the summer they have an open barn where they service steak dinners. If they are anything like breakfast and lunch, it would be great.

Our stay in St. Andrews was the highlight of our trip, and The Vintage certainly helped make it that - I simply can't say enough about how pleased we were to stay there for 10 days.

Fantastic flat, great location in St. Andrews

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at The Vintages. The flat was very welcoming with the fresh flowers, stocked fridge, and the heat on upon our arrival. It was exactly what we were looking for as we were visiting our daughter (student) for the week. The flat was cosy, well maintained and we loved the dining area in the solarium. Everything worked well and would thoroughly recommend this property to anyone. The location is spectacular. Restaurants, golf, and shops all within walking distance.

great property tucked away in st andrews

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful property, clean, warm, and personable. We arrived to fresh flowers and some food stocked in the refrigerator. The bedrooms were clean and cosy and the whole house was very spacious. Easy to get around the whole town, close to the city center, but tucked away enough so it is quiet. We really enjoyed our time here and had a great experience with the owner. Would recommend to anyone.
