Overview

About the property

Abbotsway Cottage - sleeps 6 guests in 3 bedrooms

Spacious coastal cottage with great character and no neighbours. Abbotsway is very private, with its own secluded and fully-enclosed courtyard and a pretty garden with sturdy wooden furniture and a barbecue. It has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, Wi-Fi, wood burner and its own games room. Historic harbour town of Kirkcudbright 9 miles, bustling market town of Castle Douglas 12 miles.

Abbotsway is a traditional stone-built cottage at the head of a wooded valley on Orroland Estate which rolls from the hills all the way down to the shore. Housing a loch, wildflower meadow, sculptured gardens, towering woodlands and unspoilt grassy fields; Orroland has all the best of its surrounding beauty in one place. During a stay here, it will feel like you are only sharing the views with the local wildlife and most of the time, you are.

The first thing you'll notice is the space. With roomy accommodation in two separate wings the house is ideal for families with children or for two couples sharing. Abbotsway comfortably houses 6 guests in a double, single and family room with three single beds. There is a shower room and a bathroom, one in each wing.

A modern kitchen/diner in keeping with the traditional styling of the house is adjacent to a spacious sitting room with cosy wood burner and large bay window ideal for watching wildlife.

An excellent games room provides table tennis, pool table and smart TV.

The accommodation is all on ground level with occasional steps. It is a pleasant walk (or drive) from the cottage to Orroland's private landscaped loch and picnic pavilion. You can also walk (or drive part of the way) to Orroland Bay, an attractive beach with pebbles and large flat rocks ideal for making a base on and lots of rock pools to explore.

Parties of 1-2 people who like plenty of space will also find a warm welcome and a special price for 2, equating to a 15% discount.

Fab cottage. Everything you need and more. Will be back definitely.

  • 5 of 5

Met on our arrival by a lovely lady who welcomed us with a lovely cake and daffodils. The cottage and surrounding area is wonderful - peaceful and welcoming. Our dogs had a ball and it was so safe for them to run about. Don't want to give too positive a review as it will encourage others to go lol. It's fabulous and a great find.

Owner's Response: Fiona and her home-made cakes provide a lovely welcome indeed! It's reassuring, as a guest, to know that your dogs and/or children can enjoy safe freedom in the fully enclosed private courtyard at the cottage. We're happy you enjoyed the cottage and exploring its surroundings with walks to the loch and sea shore. Thank you for choosing Orroland.

Not perfect

  • 4 of 5

Enjoyable stay in a beautiful cottage and setting. Problems with plumbing which were attended to promptly when reported, but temporarily, eg toilet bunged up , bath and shower slow to empty think these problems connected .

Tower rail leaked.

Spare toilet had a drainage smell.

Rug in front of fire tatty

Kitchen utensils need a sort out who needs 4 wooden spoons? and some replacing as with pans.

These did not spoil our holiday but the place is not cheap and for the price charged would have expected perfection. Beautiful grounds, perfect place for peace and quiet.

Owner's Response: Thank you for being so understanding about the plumbing issue that arose during your holiday. It is certainly good to have a full-time plumber on our team in these situations and that it was soon rectified! It’s fortunate that the cottage has two bathrooms, enabling you to use the second bathroom and toilet. We like to think the kitchen has a home from home feel and the equipment is regularly updated and rationalised. The utensils are greatly used when there’s a full house of seven guests but I can quite see that for a couple, two wooden spoons each is overkill, even if they are all good at slightly different things! It was great to see your lovely dog enjoying her walks around the grounds. All the best Bob and Fiona

BEAUTIFUL COTTAGE- SECLUDED ESCAPE

  • 5 of 5

THE COTTAGE WAS REALLY EXCELLENT WITH COMFY BEDS AND LOVELY FURNISHINGS. THE SURROUNDINGS WERE PEACEFUL AND PRIVATE WITH SO MUCH WILD LIFE TO SEE AND HEAR. THE FACILITIES WERE GOOD AND IT WAS WELL EQUIPPED BUT WE DID HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRIC HOB, TOUCH PAD SYSTEM WAS HARD TO OPERATE. DOGS DO NEED TO BE ON LEAD AS THERE ARE SHEEP, LAMBS AND COWS IN FIELDS, THERE IS AN ENCLOSED COURTYARD AT REAR FOR DOGS. THE COTTAGE WAS IMMACULATE , WARM, CLEAN AND FRESH AND FIONA WAS SO HELPFUL AND FRIENDLY, IT WAS LOVELY TO HAVE TEA AND HER HOME MADE CAKE ON ARRIVAL. WOULD RECOMMEND BUT MAYBE NOT FOR ANYONE WITH MOBILITY PROBLEMS AS THE WALKS AROUND ARE NOT LEVEL AND FAIRLY HILLY IN PLACES. THE WALK TO THE SHORE LINE IS DOWNHILL AND THERE IS NO BEACH AS SUCH, JUST ROCKS, ALTHOUGH THERE IS A BEACH HUT. ALL IN ALL A LOVELY ESCAPE.

Owner's Response: Thank you Kath for your informative review; such a help for future guests. I hope you found the instructions sheet for the halogen hob early on in your efforts with it. The rocky shoreline of Orroland Bay is very unusual with great shards of rock splintered during the formation of the Solway Firth. It's great for rock pooling and looking for hidden treasures and caves. There are many sandy beaches within 30 minutes drive of Orroland.

Lovely.

  • 4 of 5

Lovely, spacious and comfortable cottage with very well equipped kitchen. Loved the decor. Quirky interesting estate grounds with a short walk to the sea. Highlights of our week included the cliff top walk at Balcary Bay and the warm welcome at the Selkirk Arms for dinner. Games room was ideal for the bad weather days.

Would recommend.

Location

Car: necessary

Abbotsway Cottage is located half a mile off the A711 between the villages of Auchencairn and Dundrennan.

About the Dumfries and Galloway region

Dumfries and Galloway is like a miniature version of Scotland,

condensed down into one region.

Not just a great range of activities

(should you wish to be active) but lots of Scotland's best features in

one place.

A place where naturally beautiful countryside meets the sea,

with truly scrumptious locally produced food and drink too.

Dumfries

and Galloway is home to a stunning 200-miles stretch of coastline,

representing the seaside in all its forms; with endless sandy beaches at

Port Logan and Sandyhills, leisure-craft on the 'Solway Riviera' at

Kippford and fishing boats unloading their catch of scallops in the busy

harbour of Kirkcudbright.

It's beautiful too – the breath-taking

sunset over the Irish Sea seen from the safe haven of Portpatrick

harbour epitomises the special atmosphere where this region touches the

sea.

It's a common misconception that you have to head for the

Highlands to find great Scottish hills, but here you won't be

disappointed.

Dumfries and Galloway hosts some of the country's very

best for walkers of all abilities; from tackling the 212-mile Southern

Upland Way or challenging ranges like the 'Awful Hand' to following in

the footsteps of ancient cattle rustlers in the Devil's Beef Tub there's

plenty to savour.

With the birthplace of Christianity, ancient

buildings like Caerlaverock Castle and the first home of the Scotsman

who founded the American Navy, the south-west is also steeped in

history.

Dumfries is the heart of Robert Burns' country and Scotland's

National Museum of Costume is housed in Shambellie House at nearby New

Abbey.

The village is also where Sweetheart Abbey stands – home to one

of the most romantic stories of them all.

The region also hosts five of the 7Stanes mountain bike trails and 30 golf courses, both links and inland.

Dumfries

and Galloway is also becoming very popular for foodies –with Savour the

Flavours running two very successful food festivals at either end of

the summer season in May and September.

You can explore the local

countryside, meet local artisan producers of all types of food and

drinks and even learn to forage.

That countryside is also home to

fantastic wildlife – including the Galloway Wild Goat Park, RSPB

reserves at Mersehead and Mull of Galloway and a chance to see Red Kites

in the wild.

Kirkcudbright

The nearest town to Orroland is Kirkcudbright – the Royal Burgh

is Scotland's Artists' Town and comes alive in the summer with a

tremendous programme of entertainment including a Jazz Festival,

open-air Scottish Nights and a floodlit Tattoo (complete with massed

pipe bands) in front of MacLellan's Castle.

As well as a haven for

art and craft lovers, Kirkcudbright is also a place for family fun,

with an indoor swimming pool run brilliantly by volunteers from the

local community. At the Cocoa Bean chocolate factory kids can make

chocolate creations in an interactive workshop and explore indoor and

outdoor play areas.
