About The Owner

My bride of 27 years and I are natives of the Atlanta area. We have amazing twin daughters who are seniors in college along with an incredible church family.

The Owner purchased this lodge in 2016

Why The Owner chose Ranger

We built Dare to Relax to share with others. I was the architect, builder and designer of the log home. We built the home with two objectives in mind, first we wanted a place that would reflect the majesty of God. Second, we wanted a home that could accommodate large crowds with many spaces for conversation and community. We also wanted a home that while large in space and scale would also feel intimate for couples or smaller parties.

What makes this lodge unique

Dare to Relax Lodge is like no other log home you have ever seen. Some of the logs are almost 3 foot in diameter. Most everything in home is one-of-kind. Guests remark that after days of staying at the lodge they continue to discover features and details they hadn't previously noted. The beams used for the pot rack and kitchen hood came from a barn constructed in 1800. The 7-foot dining table is constructed from timbers from a previous south Carolina cotton mill. Every log in the home was hand peeled and sculptured to perfectly fit together in a true work of art. While rustic, the home is filled with luxury. There is an Alexa to play music at the command of your voice. There is HD movie theater room. Every bedroom has an independent sophisticated AC and heating system to allow each guest to set to the room temperature to their personal preference.

The perfect cabin!

  • 5 of 5

This was a fantastic winter retreat for our family and friends. There were multiple little areas that we enjoyed in the cabin and out back. We LOVED the porch swing, loved building bob fires out in the back, loved all the hiking with the kids and we truly loved the sound of the creek at nights. The kids room was perfect for all 7 kids and the game room brought the kids out of all of us. This was truly the best cabin! The owner I will say was also just excellent as well. Alan is extremely gracious and we loved hearing the stories behind the cabin. You won’t regret staying here!

Beautiful and inspiring!

  • 5 of 5

Dare to Relax is an unbelievably beautiful home in a beautiful area! We were blessed to be able to spend time there with family during Christmas break. The weather was very cold but we were mostly content to stay in the cabin and enjoy its comfort and amenities. However some of the hardy souls hiked/ climbed the steep hills! The teens enjoyed the game room and everyone enjoyed the hot tub as well as the nightly group games around the awesome dining table. We loved the kitchen and that beautiful bar! The craftsmanship is unbelievable and the furnishings so comfortable. The Shuman's were a blessing to work with, addressing our every need. We will always remember the special place we visited to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary and thank God for this opportunity!

Hurricane Haven

  • 5 of 5

Wow. So much to say. To begin with...Alan (owner) is an amazing person. My family and another family evacuated south Florida to Atlanta as Hurricane Irma was headed for our hometown. Unfortunately we quickly realized an extended stay in a midtown Atlanta hotel with 5 kids was going to be tough. I located the cabin on VRBO and contacted Alan. He let me know that a family had just left and it was not scheduled to be cleaned until the weekend. However, Alan showed immediate care and concern for our predicament. He offered to personally clean the cabin...which obviously much work including but not limited to washing and changing sheets. Amazing. We met him at the cabin the next evening and he gave us a personal tour. It is obvious he takes great pride in the cabin...which is what you want in an owner. We have stayed in multiple cabins in GA and NC, and this was easily the nicest. Our first day we barely saw the kids as they were playing in the creek all day. The neighborhood dog ("Jazz Cash" per the kids) was also a welcome addition when the kids were outside playing. Other helpful distractions were the hot tub and obviously the playroom with foosball, pool, ping pong, and air hockey. The kids had a blast and spent hours in this room. My only complaint is we were forced to watch countless hours of the Weather Channel discussing the impending doom of our hometown...on a 120" TV screen. Joking. The cabin has been completed to amazing standards...as would be expected from an engineer (Go Jackets!)

Ultimately my post-trip note to Alan best sums up my thoughts: "Karen and I want to send a big “Thank You” to you and your wife for letting us use your amazing cabin during a very difficult time for our families. I know you made some big exceptions for us and for that we are extremely grateful. Your cabin allowed both kids and adults to keep our minds off what “could have been” to our homes and future. We did not realize how difficult it was on the kids until my two youngest broke down in tears while in bed the night before the storm hit. They were keenly aware of what was going on, but the cabin offered great distractions. Looking back…staying in an Atlanta hotel would have compounded the misery. To beat a dead horse, I can honestly say this event was the most stressful event Karen/I have ever experienced and you/your cabin offered a safe haven for our family. We will have great stories for many years to come and this would not have been possible without you."

Very spacious. Beautiful property. Great for getting out of the city and enjoying the mountains.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this cabin for one week over Labor Day. Very spacious. We had four adults and eight children and could have fit more people in comfortably. Our children had hours of fun playing in the stream that runs behind the house. The adults loved the back porch/deck and spent most of our time out there. The game room and home theater room were great for the kids and adults. There is a neighborhood pool and tennis court. The owner is very available for any questions and needs.

Amazing Log Home

  • 5 of 5

This was a great experience from the rental process to locking up the cabin!!!! We arrived at the cabin after dark and it was so inviting. There are not enough adjectives to describe this beautiful place. The design the cabin is amazing. The logs are huge and everywhere!! From the metal roof to the beautiful wood floors everything was first class. Alan was so accommodating in every way. He was always available and helpful. Our family enjoyed the screen porch and game room so much!! The creek is wonderful and the grandkids loved playing in it! Thanks Alan for a great week at your gorgeous cabin!
