New! Lake House with Private Beach, Deck, Dock, and Canoe

Bedrooms 1
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

1BR+ Year-Round Family Lake House with private beach, dock, deck, and canoe

Loon's Nest was recently purchased in the spring of 2017 and renovated to be family friendly, open, and comfortable! It's a great cottage for a family or couple to enjoy the lake and all it has to offer!

We purchased and renovated our first house on Norcross Pond in 2016 (a 3BR+ down the lake - VRBO#886930) and were so excited when this smaller year-round camp came up for sale on the same lake in 2017! We spent the spring of 2017 renovating and had a full house of guests all summer and fall! We hope you enjoy sharing our Maine getaway. You can see some of the renovation and lake photos on Instagram @LoonsNestMaine

House: The main living and gathering space is on the upper floor (kitchen, dining, living room with pull out sectional, and full bathroom), downstairs is one bedroom (queen bed, pull out full size sofa bed, and desk). Bedroom also has room for a pack and play (available upon request). Both levels have huge windows that overlook the lake and the new deck. There is a full kitchen equipped for cooking and a vintage oven and cooktop that you're sure to enjoy! The house has a re-built deck, morning coffee area off the front of the house, and a "happy hour" deck down towards the beach. There is a small front patio (non-lake side) with a charcoal grill and seating area as well. Also, if you're coming with little ones, there is plenty of baby/toddler gear available if needed (high chair, pack and play, books, crayons, paper, games, toys, kids plates/cups/bowls/etc).

Lakefront and Lake Description: Stairs lead from the house to a private sandy beach with dock and canoe available for use (included). Norcross Pond is one mile long with camps and homes along one side only – keeping the lake quiet. Water is clear and the lake has a sandy bottom for great swimming. Speed boats, pontoon boats, and jet skis are allowed, but since the lake is small you don't gets boats out all day. A boat ramp is available if you want to bring your own boat to park at the dock (note, the boat ramp is dirt and steep). The lake is full of bass, perch, and stocked with trout, so bring your fishing rods no matter what season you visit. There are also nearby places for blueberry picking, hiking, movies, ice cream, restaurants, etc. The lake is amazing for fall foliage and is in close proximity to Mount Blue, Tumbledown, and Other hiking mountains for fall.

Local Things to Do: hiking, blueberry/strawberry/apple picking, movie theater, ice cream, lobsters, restaurants, markets, festivals, fair, antique shops, biking, breakfast at the Post Office Café (a must!), skiing, snowmobiling, and more.

Nearby Excursions: Farmington, Belgrade Lakes, Mount Blue, multiple ski mountains, Sandy River Railroad, DEW Animal Farm, Norlands Living History Center, Golf (Turner Highlands, Sandy River, Wilson Lake, and others), U Maine Farmington events, and more. Lots of excursions (hiking, skiing, ocean, and more) within 1-2 hours - Maine coastal towns (Camden, Rockport), Rangeley and Saddleback Mtn, Sugarloaf, Bethel/Sunday River Mtn, and more.

About Laurie & Ian Smith

Laurie grew up in Maine and spent summers on this lake her entire life. He parents now live on the lake year round and her grandparents and uncle are here all summer as well. Laurie's family has been summering here since her grandfather bought some lake homes here after returning from WWII and the lake is full of families who live here year round or return year after year.

Laurie & Ian Smith purchased this cottage in 2017

Why Laurie & Ian Smith chose Chesterville

We purchased this house in the spring of 2017 for our extended family to enjoy when they come visit. We live in NH have two little kids who love the lake, boating, etc. We are so excited to share this wonderful lake with other families!

What makes this cottage unique

Norcross Pond is only one mile long, which makes it the ideal size for all activities. It's easy for families with kids to enjoy boating, kayaking, fishing, etc - and you can still see them no matter how far they go! Also, with the other side remaining wooded property, every house looks out over the lake with a view the trees along the other side. The lake is also a wonderful fishing spot, with bass, perch , and stocked trout as well. In the winter, you can ice fish, snowmobile to the main trail system, ice skate, and snowshoe as well.

Pluses and Minuses 3 1/2 stars, very good value

  • 3 of 5

The owners have done an impressive job of remodeling and making what was a funky old camp fairly contemporary. There are a few of the “old camp” features remaining: the shower, the kitchen stove/oven, the outside look of the asphalt shingle siding. But the refrigerator, toilet, windows, decks, and just about everything else are very good to excellent.

These are things we wish we had known when deciding: The faucet water is not potable; bring water. The cottages next door are very close, on one side about 20 feet away; unfortunately, while we were here they were working on the closer house outside intermittently throughout the week so their normal talking felt too close, and they were often just outside a curtainless window near the kitchen table. That next camp also has security lighting front and back all night; the light is visible through the large bedroom windows which do not have shades. The road is 30 feet from the front door, and by day there are cars and even big trucks going by every few minutes, mostly at 40-50 miles an hour; barely audible in the downstairs bedroom, they didn't affect our sleep. There was no heating when we were here (it got down to 60 inside several days), and it looked as though if it had been on the only vent was in the bathroom (?). The camp has two rooms plus bathroom (see owners' pictures). The upstairs has the kitchen and living room “open floor plan”, and it felt spacious enough. Furniture, area rugs, and a few nice prints were good.

Large modern windows on both levels give a partial view through trees to the water, which had infrequent motor activity. Chairs outside at several levels including on the narrow beach give wonderful places to sit and eat, read, or talk, plus a more open view of the pond.

The deck is super, but we actually found we didn't use it much; the happy hour deck for two offers a much better view of the lake. We were here in coolish weather, so we didn't go swimming, but did a circuit of the lake in the canoe one day and particularly enjoyed paddling the narrow channel at the south end up to the beaver dam. We also walked around the lake; there is a fascinating gravestone and cellar hole, plus a trail to the west opposite “Randall” sign that branches all over for snowmobiles (or hikes).

I think many visitors will find the lake, canoe, narrow beach, decks, and the many improvements will outweigh the drawbacks, which may just be part of the rustic summer camp experience.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your response and feedback! We have since added blinds to all the windows on the sides facing the neighbors and in the bedroom overlooking the deck to help with privacy and darkening. The neighbors have also finished their renovation so it should be a quieter visit next time! We are glad the benefits of this lake outweighed a few shortfalls for you and you enjoyed your stay.

Quaint Quiet Get-away

  • 4 of 5

This cottage is perched over a beautiful quiet small Lake. It gets wonderful evening light (western facing) and has a nice dock and sandy (mini) beach. With the exception of the bathroom, it has been nicely renovated and well equip with linens, comfortable bed and sleep sofa, basic cookware, a nice canoe (we were even able to get kayaks), and great play stuff for kids. There is a very steep slope down to the water, but there are good stairs with a sturdy railing and the water itself does not have a sharp drop off (nice for swimming or wading!). The deck off the lower back level is beautiful, and the mini-deck halfway down the slope is a perfect reading spot. For us, the only minuses were the shower stall and need to bring bottled water for drinking and cooking (pretty common for lake cottages in Maine). The owner lives right down the street and did a great job preparing the place; even a bottle of wine was waiting for us!

If you can't relax here, you can't relax anywhere!

  • 5 of 5

Tons of care went into sprucing up this lovely little lake house. Perfect for a small family or a couple's escape, it's off the beaten path yet accessible to those modern conveniences we've all become accustomed to.

The house is very comfortable and well equipped. We kept expecting to run into something that hadn't been thought of but after a while simply gave up. There are several little spots inside and out where you can plant yourself for a well-deserved date with a good book. The loons are never too far away and serenaded us both morning and night. The water in July was fabulous for swimming and the lake is exceptionally clear.

There's only occasional activity on the lake mostly kayaks, canoes, and rowboats. You will find that the neighbors are downright friendly without being nosy in any way. Lovely people!

Check-in and check-out were smooth and the owners are excellent at communicating before and afterward.

All in all, it's a perfect 10!
