It’s more than a gîte, it’s an estate in the heart of Dordogne: 14th century manor with large natural pool, many terraces and water gardens, medieval vegetable garden and orchard, spring, pastures, forests, clearings and stunning sunsets!
The gîte Les Bois de Palice is an invitation to calmness, relaxation and well-being.
On a former 60-acre wine estate, the gîte is set in the 18th century barns that have been tastefully renovated. The spacious houses from the Périgord enjoy stunning panoramic views over the Vallée de la Vézère, on more than 30 km. Close to unavoidable tourist sites, far away from the summer crowd, the gîte Les Bois the Palice is ideally located in the middle of nature and surrounded by flowered pastures and forests.
For your holidays, family reunions, associative working groups, internships and professional seminars, the gîte is adjustable and can be divided into 2 different gîtes with all the necessary comfort: 6, 9 or 15 persons (that is to say 340 m² and 7 bedrooms with private bathrooms) and extra beds available in an adjacent Kyrgyz yurt (4 persons in 40 m²).
Description and equipment:
The very bright gîte is composed of a large dining room, a living room/dining room, 2 kitchens, a living room/library, a small playroom, 7 bedrooms with shower room and private toilet, 2 laundry rooms and a detached music room: everything is carefully decorated in a multicultural, gay and colourful style.
All bedrooms are stylish and carefully furnished. The hind bedroom is even bigger than the others and its bathroom is equipped with a large bath. On the ground floor, the frog bedroom is suitable for disabled persons.
The 2 kitchens avec quality equipment for gastronomic cooking. The dining room from the Périgord is suitable for 15 persons around a table in convivial atmosphere. You can also sit outside, on the terrace or the summer kitchen where you will have barbecues and dine with the sound of the crickets.
For your pleasure, works of art are installed on the walls of the gîte and a library with different references is at your disposal: wild plants, organic gardening, natural therapy treatments, spirituality, music, art history, contemporary art and children’s literature.
Overlooking the landscape of the valleys, the large 6x15 m natural pool offers an unrivalled quality swimming thanks to the phytofiltration with the planted ponds (Label Bionova). There is no chlorine, no salt, the water is alive and provide the pleasant feeling of revitalisation.
The secured area of the large wooden terrace all around the pool invites to relaxation and farniente on the sunloungers, hammocks or the big rubber rings. On the nearby hanging terrace, you can watch birds and dragonflies while getting a tan. Upon request, a calm or dance music selection will accompany you during the day.
Several ponds stretch below the terraces of the pool. The water garden offers the opportunity to have a walk along with the trickling water. A small waterfall refreshes you on your walk until the large fine sandy beach further. Everywhere, life is in full swing and you can discreetly stop in the middle of this aquatic microcosm: dragonflies, toads, salamanders, butterflies, birds, snails, etc.
Children can also discover the little people and safely have a stroll because all the areas are closed. Some are accessible, but there must be an adult.
You can keep on walking until the medieval vegetable garden, the spring and the orchard and through the fields and the forests. Several paths cross the estate and get to the hiking paths and the surrounding villages.
For professionals who are searching for course sites and associations that organise meetings, a large 50 m² activity yurt is at your disposal as well as an extra independent bedroom. For activities and outdoor entertainments, the beach, a 200 m² stretch of sand, overlooks the landscape and offers a good working environment for body and mind arts (martial arts, dance, yoga, meditation, etc.) It is also possible to increase the sleeping capacity over 15 persons in the bedrooms of the gîte (yurt-dormitory, extra bedroom, etc.)
For musicians, amateurs or professionals, the music room has an excellent Steinway B211 grand piano as well as many world instruments.

An absolutely beautiful place, with the most wonderful views and accommodation. This property is great for two families wanting to holiday together, but have their own space. It would also work well for two separate groups. The views are spectacular, and such a beautiful property and setting. Great for runners and cyclists. There is a shop in the village a very short drive away where you can order bread. They were friendly and helpful and the croissant etc were excellent. Nearby there are villages with day markets, night markets, excellent restaurants, canoeing and more. The natural pool is lovely - a normal pool with a pond next to it that filters the water. It is heated, (but with solar heating so if it is a cloudy day the water is not warm) Loads of wonderful outdoor and indoor space and a very relaxing environment. The owners are discrete but very helpful and friendly. I would highly recommend.
Our family rented this house for a family vacation. Eight adults and one eight month old baby spent a wonderful week in this house perfect for a group. Every bedroom has an en suite bathroom, and the house which is subdivided into two sections, offered sanctuary and space. We had everything we needed. Two kitchens allowed our hired cook to cook in one and us to have our own food for breakfast and lunch in the other. We dined on fois gras and goose outside watching the sunset overlooking the valley, or inside in the warmth of the long country wood tables.
The swimming pool which was without chorine provided a time to lap with the birds singing on a nearby fence waiting for a chance to drink. There were two distinct decked areas. Long, beautiful hikes over the hills were just outside the door with a cherry tree offering a treat along the way. Bike rental was available for the strong biker, but for the average biker, a lovely bike path along a river could be found in a nearby small town. Then expresso and hand made ice cream followed the lazy afternoon ride. We found a kyack rental site as well but that will be for next time.
Sarlat and the local cave sites and chateaus were all within a 1/2 hour of the house. Brick oven baked baguette, only a 5 minute car dash away. So although it seemed we were miles away from civilization, private and pastoral, we had access to sites and restaurants in a short time.
The owners, two university teachers, live in the house next door. They were discrete and always available for advice and input should you need it. Otherwise they were almost invisible.
Everything was perfect. We only regretted not staying longer because as we spent the day seeing sites, and some of the best sites were on the property. We all said we could have used more pool days overlooking the lush wildness. And I could have enjoyed playing their magnificent Steinway in their sound proofed music room yet another time.
It proved to be a memorable, quality family time and we would return there in a heartbeat. It would be great for all kinds of groups as the house layout absorbs the people and provides space for everyone. There is even a large yurt just below the main house which could be used for for morning yoga or meditation.
BRAVO !
The gîte is ideally located in the heart of the Périgord Noir, the authentic Périgord, the one with truffles and prehistory!
The gîte is located 20 minutes from the very beautiful town of Sarlat-la-Canéda and its authentic medieval narrow streets, its truffles and foie gras market, its boutiques and its many restaurants.
For gourmet holidays, other addresses are spread around the gîte: starred chefs in Renaissance castles, brunch by the river or local cuisine at the farm. We will be delighted to guide you in your search for good restaurants where you can taste the authentic cuisine of the Périgord!
For cultural holidays, the gîte is close to all the unavoidable sites of the Vallée de Vézère and the Vallée de l’Homme that has been home to the Homo sapiens: 10 minutes from the famous Lascaux Caves or the Font-de-Gaume Caves (less known but original!), 15 minutes from the world capital of prehistory Les Eyzies-de-Tayac (troglodyte houses, shelters, prehistoric caves and the Pôle International de la Préhistoire (PIP)) without forgetting the troglodyte villages of La Madeleine or the rocky shelters of the Roque Saint-Christophe, continuously inhabited during at least 25 000 years! Most of these cultural sites offer many fun and creative activities in particular for children: carve your own flint in the Cro-Magnon style or for the adults, try to start a fire without matches. If you fail, Benoit, your host, can provide an at-home demonstration: he starts a fire with a flint! And don’t worry for the barbecue, you have the Zip lighter!
Let’s go in the past. You will be only 30 minutes from the wonderful medieval castles of Beynac, Cazenac and Castelnaud where you can sail on antique barges and embrace the landscape and observe wild birds and the small inhabitants of the river. More recent, the wonderful château de Hautefort (30 km) is an evidence of the important moments of the Classical times with the creation of the famous French formal gardens. This is only an example, because Dordogne has more than a thousand of listed castles! Being ourselves art historians by training, we will be delighted to guide you in your visits!
To better understand the history of the region, you can also go to the village of Bournat where the lifestyle of the 19th century is completely reconstituted with traditional craft workshops that you can try. Back in the present, less than 30 minutes from the gîte, you can also visit the many gardens that decorate exceptional nature or historic sites such as the château de Marqueyssac with its hanging gardens, the fantastic ruins of the château de Commarque or the panoramic gardens of Limeuil. Other nature sites are available as well as the wonderful nature of the Périgord: the Gouffre de Proumeyssac and its crystal cathedral and the Cave of the Grand Roc in Eyzies.
For sport holidays, you are also close to la Vézère and river activities: for example, about 10 minutes away, there is Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère, one of the most beautiful villages of France where you can go canoeing, horse-riding, tree climbing or hiking before a picnic by the river (different gastronomic restaurants on site).
For relaxing holidays, the gîte Les Bois de Palice is 20 minutes from the Buddhist Dag Po Centre and La Fleur de Vie hammam. If you are curious or love natural therapy treatments, we can guide you towards many therapists of the region and massage sessions are possible on site (Ayurvedic massages, Shiatsu, sonotherapy, yoga, etc.)
For all supply matters, the gîte is only 10 minutes from Montignac (market twice a week, all shops, tourist office and cinema) and there is also a small local grocery in La Chapelle-Aubareil. You will find many nearby day or night markets. On site, we offer some small services such as breakfast or picnic baskets as well as vibratory music concerts to relax (singing bowls, musical saw, piano, etc.) or energetic relaxation sessions.
For gourmet holidays (truffles, foie gras and Monbazillac), cultural holidays (visits, creative workshop, etc.), sport holidays (hiking, river, horse-riding, paragliding, etc.) or relaxing holidays (strolls, swims, rest, meditation, music, etc.), the gîte Les Bois de Palice offers many on site and nearby activities and entertainment to fully enjoy your holidays.
