Situated less than 2 hours South West of Paris, at the entrance to the Loire Valley, this chic self catering cottage lies in the middle of the 100 acre private park of the luxurious Chateau de la Barre. Guests renting the cottage enjoy full use of the woods, meadows, pond and vast walled flower garden, as well as the onsite bicycles, ping pong table and lawn croquet.
The cottage has its own independent access via the XVIth century courtyard and a small garden to dine al fresco. Up a few steps, the entrance door leads into a little hall, opening up into a large living room/dining room with a large stone fireplace and two couches making out into either twin or a king size bed. There is an en suite shower/WC and infrared sauna, and an adjacent fully fitted kitchen.
Up a flight of stairs, there is a large double bedroom, with a big art deco bureau and two massive armchairs, and an en suite Jacuzzi bath with separate WC.
Guests rent the cottage on a weekly basis usually, and will be included in a private tour of the majestic reception rooms of the Chateau, whose owners, Count and Countess Guy and Marnie de Vanssay (their family have lived at Chateau de la Barre for more than 610 years) will be pleased to assist their cottage guests with tips for sightseeing, farmers' markets, shops and restaurants as well as a good local map.
Count and Countess Guy and Marnie de Vanssay took over their family chateau (Chateau de la Barre has been in the family of Guy de Vanssay since 1404! unbroken lineage) in 2002, opening it up to welcoming guests. Initially, the chateau became a luxury boutique hotel, with the owners still onsite offering a warm, personal welcome, and then the adjacent cottage was totally renovated in 2009, to be rented out, self catering, on a weekly basis, following the request of many guests to be able to return, glean the farmer's markets, cook for themselves and further explore this rich region of France.
Marnie de Vanssay purchased this cottage in 1404
We actually love this little cottage so much that we live in it ourselves during the winter, when the chateau is closed for the season and our full time presence is not required!
This cottage offers the use of a 100 acre park with woods, meadows, a pond and a vast walled flower garden. It also has sweeping views over the valley of the park. A unique additional advantage is that Guy and Marnie, the owners, are onsite just next door in the chateau, during your stay, ready to help you, if need be, with a restaurant booking, sightseeing information or maps, and that during your stay, you will receive a private tour of the magnificent reception rooms of their chateau!
There are excellent stables 10 km away, a couple of tennis courts 3km away and kayaking 30 km away.3 golf courses are within a radius of 45 km. Mainly, the immediate region is known for being bucolic, with many small, picturesque country roads via hills and along rivers, quaint villages with Romanesque chapels with XIIth century frescoes, vineyards, romantic gardens and woods. In the summer, there are various musical festivals all around. There are various gourmet Auberges (restaurants) to discover, and regular farmer's markets. The medieval Plantagenet city of Le Mans is truly magnificent, and serves as a stageset to most historic films. Further afield (1hr to 1h30min drive) are all the famous Loire Valley Castles, but as they are quite crowded with tourists, guests welcome the possibility to return to the peace and quiet of the Cottage du Chateau in its private park in the less touristy little Loir Valley (without an 'e', the little Loir valley runs parallel, 30km North of the main Loire Valley.
