Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday cottage in Oakridge Lynch - Hope Cottage

1 bedroom romantic retreat with spectacular views and private garden

Hope Cottage is a charming period property, sitting in its own private south facing garden with spectacular views across the valley. The property has been recently renovated to a high standard, retaining traditional charm and original character features such as oak beams, mullion windows and exposed stone walls, alongside modern comfort and conveniences such as gas central heating, and a new bathroom and kitchen. There is a wood burner and satellite TV in the sitting room and a large landing area upstairs where a sofa looks out through a picture window across the valley. There is one bedroom, with a mezzanine level above, which provides additional accommodation. The cottage has wifi. The enclosed, private garden to the front of the property includes flower beds and a paved area with table, chairs and barbecue. There is a parking space to one side, suitable for one small to medium sized car. Alternative parking is available within the village for larger vehicles.

About Sarah Lingard

We - Sarah and Mat - bought Hope Cottage at the end of 2012 and spent four months renovating it. We have lived in the area for 17 years and love everything about it - from the beautiful scenery to the great walks that end up in wonderful local pubs. Our three children are at school locally and have all grown up in the area, and they helped with the restoration - from rubbing down plasterwork to pulling rambling ivy off the outside walls! Bringing Hope Cottage back to life has been a real labour of love for the whole family.

Why Sarah Lingard chose Stroud district

Very few cottages have such natural charm or are in such an enviable position. When we first saw it, the property was covered in ivy and virtually falling apart at the seams having been neglected for many years. We fell in love with its potential immediately, but walking up the stairs and seeing the views across the valley from the landing window made our hearts race.

What makes this cottage unique

Hope Cottage has character and charm, alongside privacy and seclusion. We found some fascinating objects inside, from old beer kegs to glass chemical bottles, and have put some of these back into the newly refurbished cottage. We loved the iron knocker on the front door in the shape of Kitchener, and the statue of a reclining lady (who now sits on top of the flat roof above the kitchen). We rescued some of the vast amount of Cotswold stone and used it to build up the walls in the garden, and put plants into the stone pots and containers that we found buried in the old flower beds. Inside we were careful with our plasterwork to keep the special curved shape of the walls in the bedroom, and when insulating the roof space we worked around the old A-frame beams that soar upwards above the mezzanine. We have had to hide a trap door, and at the moment we haven't exposed the old stone staircase that wound up behind the fireplace in the sitting room, but this is a project for the future.

Beautiful cottage in the countryside

  • 5 of 5

A tranquil retreat, just what was needed for January blues. There are many pubs in the local area that serve hearty and fresh food and all the locals are very warm and welcoming. The cottage itself is set in an idyllic location with magnificent views of the countryside.

Thanks to that true cottage, I discovered the gorgeous COTSWOLDS. I understand why this region is called "OUTSTANDING NATURAL BEAUTY". There are so many walks to do nearby, so many typical and beautiful villages, especially BIBERY that I loved! The cottage is a real "nest" , where you feel so good, thanks to its comfort, and the warm atmosphere, the small lovely garden from where , you have a fantastic view of the landscape...I spent a fantastic week and I do recommend that location to nature lovers.

Love Love Love it!

  • 5 of 5

Sarah's cottage is lovely. Fit our family of five perfectly and the kids loved the loft. It is cozy and just as we envisioned. The cottage has all the modern amenities needed even though it was built in the 1700s! What a beautiful place to stay in the Cotswolds!

The Idyllic Hope Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Its pretty hard to describe perfection, but I will give it a go. The cottage sits in the beautiful France Lynch with narrow lanes and a beautiful pub, The Kings Head. Hope Cottage is small and perfectly formed, glowing with original features but featuring all modern home comforts you may need.

My wife and I celebrated 10 years together with 4 days at Hope Cottage and could not asked for a better place to spend it. Sarah is lovely and the cottage was spotless on arrival, small necessities already there on arrival, including milk, cookies and tea/coffee.

The walks in the surrounding areas of Stroud are unbelievable, we downloaded some before we arrived, but shouldn't have bothered, there were some in the welcome pack!

All in all the perfect getaway, we really do hope to return sooner rather than later.

Pure tranquility

  • 5 of 5

Hope cottage is a jewel in the crown of the Cotswolds, a fabulous little place situated within the most beautiful part of England. The Kings Head pub is only a few hundred yards up the road and is more than welcoming.

We can't wait to return!

France Lynch is a beautiful hillside village in the South Cotswolds with narrow winding lanes, dry stone walls and weavers cottages dating from the days when the area was at the heart of the historic Cotswold textile industry. There is a pub at the end of the lane, with excellent walking from the village in all directions and stunning views and scenery. The historic Thames and Severn Canal runs through the valley below, and there are many pretty Cotswold villages and towns within a short distance. Local attractions include antique shopping in Tetbury and Stroud's famous Farmers Market. Slad Valley, immortalised by Laurie Lee in 'Cider with Rosie' is just a short drive away, as are Painswick Rococo Gardens, Prinknash Abbey, Berkeley Castle, Sudeley Castle, Westonbirt Arboretum, Woodchester Park Mansion, Chedworth Roman Villa, and Gloucester Cathedral and Docks. There is a choice of good places to eat locally and numerous atmospheric country pubs, with shopping in nearby towns and bigger centres like Bristol, Cheltenham and Bath within a 45 minute drive. The area is conveniently situated for access to a number of major events including Gatcombe Horse Trials, Badminton, Kemble and Fairford Air Shows, Cheltenham Races and Literary and Music Festivals.
