About the property

Contemporary Living Space (sleeps 4) With Rural Broadleaf Valley View

We are proud to present this brand new holiday let we have just completed building for the 2013 Spring holiday season. The site at Rockenhayne, Branscombe is situated in a peaceful valley on a site which has been a dwelling since the 9th Century. The Maggs' Family are the proprietors and live on-site with Tan, our border collie. We are 1 mile from the main coast road the A3052 and within 10 minutes drive of local villages, towns and all amenities. We are very pet-friendly!

The Retreat has been specifically designed to accommodate those with access needs and has been built using locally sourced timber and as much local craftsmanship as possible has be employed. We are fully Eco-friendly with solar powered electricity and heat-exchange underfloor heating. We have our own Spring water supply. As much waste as possible ends up on Rosie's compost and we keep two hives of bees in our vegetable garden, so we're doing our bit! We use Ecover natural cleaning products.

The Retreat comprises two bedrooms; a master bedroom with en-suite wetroom with disabled-access features, and balcony doors opening into a decked area overlooking the valley. The twin-bedded room has a flip down tv and an en-suite shower room. Both bedrooms have plenty of built-in storage and a hairdryer.

The superking master bedroom has a large limestone tiled wetroom with grab rails and extra features such as a small handbasin next to the toilet, and mirrors for those using wheelchairs. Both bathrooms have heated towel rails.

The main living space is open-plan with a kitchen, dining area and large area. The entire front of the building opens up with folding doors so you can connect with the outdoors and there is a large decked area with outdoor seating for sunnier days. There is a large private lawn area for dogs.

The living area has a 32' tv with DVD player and a 30+ library of DVDs. There are books and boardgames for you to enjoy. We have fantastic free Wi-Fi connection for you to use.

All areas have been designed as best possible to accommodate those in wheelchairs.

The light airy space and beautiful scenery will have particular appeals to artists, and Rockenhayne itself has a very calm and healing feel about it.

We have three other holiday homes on the same site if you would like to come with larger families or a group of friends.

A beautiful property - light, clean, spacious, comfortable

We loved this house - it was blissfully peaceful and just a lovely space to occupy. Everything worked and was easy to use, and everything was comfortable. We were warmly welcomed. We found the property to be an excellent base from which to explore the SW coast path and the pretty villages of East Devon and West Dorset.

A great place to hide from the world!

The Retreat is situated at the bottom of a one mile long unmade lane surrounded by an abundance of lovely woodland and hedgerows. The Retreat stands on its own at the bottom of the lane on one side of a valley and once again being surrounded by beautiful woodland and lush green fields. When inside, this position makes it feel as though the Retreat has grown up with all the surrounding vegetation and makes you feel as though you really are in the midst of it.

The Retreat itself is very airy and spacious with lots of natural light everywhere provided by large patio doors, large/high windows and skylights yet warm and cosy.

Apart from a missed collection of dust and dog hair under the pouffe when we had to move it and dust under the beds the place was generally clean and easy to keep clean with laminate floors everywhere.

We are an extremely fussy lot when it comes to cleanliness . Through very unpleasant past experiences we now always take our own bedding and pillows.(There is nothing worse than finding other peoples dribble stains on the pillow you are meant to use and some places try to hide them with pillow protectors!)

To our surprise there was,nt really a need to do this this time (except an issue with the pillows which we discovered on our last day when stripping the beds)

We were so very impressed by the fact that the mattresses were clean with good protectors and even more so we were so impressed by the duvet protectors! I wish this was made mandatory for all holiday lets. Absolutely fantastic! And reassuring.

The bedrooms were simple and beautiful.

We were made very welcome by the lovely and very entertaining Rita, the owners friend who was dog and house sitting with the equally lovely Star their border collie .

We so enjoyed the chats and laughs we had with Rita. She is an absolute joy to be around if you are in low spirits! We all agreed we would like to spend a week in her company. She is so funny and amusingly articulate with words!

Sadly we could,nt walk too far around the 60 acres as the ground was very sodden due to the heavy rain prior to our arrival and periodic downpours in between. It was still a bit of a conundrum though as to whether to stay on site or explore the surrounding areas as there is so much to see and do. One week is not enough.

Beautiful, very accssible property

This place is lovely and light with plenty of big windows & glass doors, also great views from inside, and outside on the fully accessible terrace. The larger bedroom and it's en suite were spacious making it easy to manouver my chair and shower chair, and to hoist in the bedroom. The toilet was too high for my showerchair but the owner had a small ramp made which sorted this. Whole place was clean and well-maintained, good customer service. Lots of things to see within a 30 minute drive, nearby Beer and Branscombe well worth a visit. Would definitely recommend staying here.

Beautiful holiday home in amazing surroundings!

Beautiful light and spacious home, very comfortable with all that you need and set in beautiful woodlands, our family had the best holiday visiting all the great places near by and the amazing Jurassic Coast. Rosemary our host who lives near by with her lovely Dog Star are always available for any needs you may have and were there to great us when we arrived with warm scones, jam and clotted cream which was just what we needed after our journey, we look forward to visiting again soon!

A couple of miles drive into the picturesque villages of Branscombe and Beer, both with beaches. There are fishing trips offered on both beaches and a couple of great pubs in Branscombe; The Masons Arms is well known for good food. Catch of the day is sold on Beer beach and there are plenty of seaside shops and nice pubs there too and fish and chips if you need! The popular town of Sidmouth is a 10 minute drive away, and friends run Jurrasic Paddlesports from the beach there, with the option of paddleboarding or sea kayaking, and guided tours around the coastline. The market town of Honiton is 10 minutes drive also and is well known for it's antiques trade and curiosity shops. The Holt at Honiton is a lovely gastropub. The Hare and Hounds (5 minutes drive away) boasts a fantastic carvery Sunday roast. The famous Donkey Sanctuary is 5 minutes away and the Norman Lockyer Observatory at Salcome regis is a couple of miles away. There are plenty of walks locally and we have our own 60acres of land for you to explore. Pets are welcome and have their own lawn to use as well as any of the fields and forests to enjoy.
