Ideal HOME base for day trips, wine trails, thermal baths, natural parks and the beach. Located in the HEART of the Maremma area and so close and convenient to explore one of the most attractive and varried coast and countrysides of Italy and close to Tuscan major world-famous towns. According to locals, the true heart of the Maremma runs along this coast, from Grosseto to Capalbio, and 30 miles inland to Mount Amiata. It is also one of the most unspoiled regions in Tuscany, Italy, marked by pristine beaches fringed with umbrella-shaped maritime pines and cork-oak woodlands, where aristocratic families such as the Principe Corsinis still hunt for wild boar. Wine estates, black-and-white porcupine quills, pink flamingos grazing in Orbetello lagoon, owls. But this is what you can see outside the house and in this dream-like area definately worth a visit or two or three... About this CHARMING house you can't but fall in love with: An independent house on two levels with incredible views and a massive garden with plenty of character and various levels, featuring a large historical red stone. It sleeps 4 comfortably in two large bedrooms and it offers 2 stylish bathrooms with showers, a very large, elegant and fully equipped kitchen with a sturdy typical rustic Tuscan table and chairs and a marvellous living/drawing room, elegantly furnished end with a huge fireplace as a focal point which is great for the heart, body and soul of the modern 'traveller', especially in the winter and in the cool evenings.

Additional Fees:

1. The use of bed linen and bath towels charged at €15/guest for each set

2. Central Heating in the Winter

In Montiano town centre, a picturesque medieval village with breathtaking views and a very slow and Tuscan village lifestyle, just a short walk from the house, you can find all the amenities: 3 excellent restaurants, coffee shops and wine bar (with WIFI internet access), a small supermarket/delicatessen , a grocery store, a butcher’s, a chemist’s, a bank, a tennis club and a nearby 9 hole golf course (5 minutes away) and an 18 hole golf course (20 minutes away).

At a short drive from some of the most splendid cities in Italy, giving you the option to find the most convenient flights to Rome, Florence or Pisa (150km from Rome, Florence, Pisa Airports), MONTIANO is in the province of Grosseto in Tuscany. This area is known as the MAREMMA region. Montiano is a typical Medieval picturesque village on one of theTuscan hills with its peaceful feel of a slow pace lifestyle.

This is the perfect base which allows you to explore other Medieval historical nearby villages, local vineyards, olive groves, fields and woods. This area gives you a complete selection of tourist offers: for the beach lovers, just 10 km away our guests can find beaches of the well-known Argentario coast. The towns of Grosseto and Orbetello are only 15 minutes away by car. For those you appreciate the simple beauty of pure Nature, the fabulous Natural Park of Maremma with its miles of long white sand beaches is just a few minutes away. If this wasn’t enough, you can also enjoy the Natural Park Feniglia and the Orbetello Lagoon which you can clearly see from the bedroom windows. In other words, the nearest beaches are just 10km away, reachable in a comfortable 10-minute traffic free drive through rural sceneries and vineyards. It's the well-known Argentario Coast (Tyrrhenian side of the Mediterranean sea) with its fine sand beaches and rocky bays, its fortressed village ports, like Porto Santo Stefano, Talamone, Porto Ercole with boat rental services, boutiques for a fabulous Italian shopping experience, 'trattorias' and wine bars for a true Italian culinary experience for an all-round Italian full immersion.

SATURNIA with its public incredibly beautiful natural Hot Springs - This pink-stone village, part of the larger town of Manciano, dates back to Roman times, when nobles would “take the cure” at its sulfurous hot springs. Today, visitors can still soak up the benefits at the Cascate del Gorello, a public waterfall that cascades down natural limestone. Those seeking a more intimate experience check in to the exclusive Terme di Saturnia Spa, where the same restorative waters gush into a private thermal pool. Thanks to the much-lauded restaurants, Saturnia is also a popular detour for gastronomes.

L’Argentario - A thickly wooded, 23-square-mile promontory linked to the mainland by three causeways, L’Argentario has long been a vacation spot for wealthy Romans. Its main towns are Porto Santo Stefano, a flashy harbor for yachts, and the colorful Porto Ercole, where the Baroque painter Caravaggio died of malaria in 1610. There’s also the lively fishing port of Orbetello nearby, with its blue-tinged lagoon.

The Maremma’s Volcanic Rock Villages - A drive through the Etruscan villages of Pitigliano, Sovana, and Sorano makes a pleasant road trip. From Saturnia, head 30 minutes west to Sovana. Walk down the cobblestoned main street, then visit the 12th-century St. Peter’s Cathedral. Next, drive 15 minutes south to Pitigliano to tour the Jewish Museum (Vicolo Marghera; 39-0564/614-230), in the former ghetto. Then swing by La Pietra Stregonia (76 Via Zuccarelli; 39-339/231-8479), where Alessandra Fonzo creates intricate jewelry from vintage stones. Drive another 15 minutes northwest to Sorano and hike the labyrinth of narrow streets to the Orsini Fort, followed by a glass of organic Sovana Rosso wine at L’Ottava Rima.

The medieval village of Capalbio is the Maremma’s epicenter, and come summer, Italian politicians and actors fill its sidewalk trattorias and artisanal shops selling regional specialties such as piquant olive oils and house-made jams. From here, it’s a 15-minute drive southwest to the fashionable Ultima Spiaggia, the perfect spot for a beachside frittura di pesce.

A Wonderful Relaxing House for a Holiday - Returning for a Second Visit

  • 5 of 5

We have just had a wonderful week, returning for a second year. It was great to revisit places we had found last year. The house was as perfect as we remember, full of character, spacious, relaxing, user friendly and maintained to a very high standard. The well equipped kitchen has everything you need. The comfortable lounge has lots of literature and books on Tuscan culture. The bedrooms are light and airy with fabulous views across the Maremma to Monte Argentario. Every morning we would wander into Montiano to buy our breakfast ingredients, the delicious grape cake and slices of pizza for lunch from Paniicio - Pasticceria Fantoni Enzo E Figli. It was so refreshing to be able to eat outside in the large garden full of lavender, herbs and trees. Montiano a peaceful medieval hill village with a couple of bars and restaurants. We ate in Ristorante da Ghigo on our first evening, delicious food and good local red wine.

The house is ideally situated to visit two amazing pristine beaches on the Maremma coast. The Feneglia beach near Ansedonia is 6.5 km of gently sloping sand backed by pine groves. In the Parco Regionale della Maremma the beach stretches 20 km south from Marina di Alberese. Both are perfect for swimming with clear blue water.

We spent quite a few of our days on the Feniglia Beach. Friday in Scansano’s market for fresh vegetables and of course Morellino di Scansano. Saturday we hired bicycles and cycled through the pine groves of the Feneglia to Orbitello to eat lunch in I Pescatoria. The grilled sea bass was the freshest fish we have ever eaten accompanied by Ansonica white wine. Sunday in Sienna, only an hour’s drive away. The Duomo is astounding in its evidence of Sienese power, ambition and artistic achievement. Looking at the late medieval and Renaissance paintings in the Pinacoteca was a peaceful contrast. Near Montiano we found new restaurants –Trattoria Cupi and Il Poderone Da Carla and we returned to Trattoria Da Maria Di Pallini in Pereta, classic Tuscan cooking and exceptional value. There is so much Etruscan and Roman history to visit nearby especially around Sovana, Sorano and Pitigliano. Near Saturnia the unique Cascate del Gorello - hot water cascading over rocks.

Further afield, Sienna, Orvieto, Tarquinia and Lago di Bolsena, all within driving distance.

Case Cassan is perfect for a holiday and such great value. We have stayed in SW Tuscany many times and this house is the best place. We loved it.

A Beautiful House,Perfect and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in Casa Cassani/Craveri in Montiano. The house looks so good with the grape vine and the green shutters. It is perfect, so spacious, well equipped and has been sympathetically renovated. There is everything you need. The kitchen is equipped to a very high standard and you walk into the refined relaxing lounge with French windows onto the garden. What a garden on three levels full of herbs and flowers. We had breakfast there every morning. The lounge is full of books – literature, art, architecture and books on the Maremma. Upstairs the bedrooms are large, light and airy. From the bedroom windows there are fantastic views across the Maremma to the sea. In the morning we watched the sun slowly light up the different recesses and hills with their pattern of olive trees and cypresses. Looking further on to the sea with Monte Agentanio ahead and nearby Isola Del Giglio as a silvery veil.

Montiano is peaceful and charming. To be able to walk into the village was so relaxing especially early in the morning to the outstanding Pasticceria Fantoni Enzo E Figli. What a delightful surprise with fresh pastries and savouries of such an excellent quality.

Montiano has a seriously good restaurant, Da Ghigo, linen tablecloths and elegant glassware, excellent Italian cooking and a good cellar of regional wines.

We found other great restaurants near Montiano. Lunch at the organic Biofattoria Bosco Felice was memorable – gastronomic delights from their farm and garden. We had another delicious evening meal at Trattoria Da Maria Di Pallini Luciano in Pereta – a set menu: antipasto, three primi, two main courses, dessert, ammazzacaffe and wine. Classic Tuscan cooking by Luciano.

We found some wonderful beaches nearby. We especially liked Tombolo di Feniglia near to Ansedonia. You walk through the pine forest to a 6km perfect beach with clear water.

There is so much and so many places to visit from Casa Cassani – walking on the impressive walls in Magliano in Toscana, the natural hot spring in the countryside at Saturnia, visiting Massa Marittima, Pitigliano, Sovana, the Etruscan sites of Roselle and Vulci and much more.

We have lasting memories sitting in the garden in the evening with a glass of Morellino di Scansano – magic.

Thank you Gabriella for a wonderful holiday and to be able to stay in your house was such a pleasure. We will return and stay here again.

We recommend the house without any reservations.

Tutto a regola d'arte

  • 5 of 5

Because Montiano is so close to the coast and it has so much to offer, it attracts interest from all over the world at any time of the year. With each season the colour and the views change. Visitors tend to come back at a different time of the year because one visit is never enough to experience all the things that are on offer. It’s warm from Spring to Autumn while in late autumn and winter it remains a wonderful place for combining cultural interests with the charm of the Tuscan landscape, the produce on offer and the sports available.

It is strategically located to explore the area with day trips to the rest of Tuscany and activities (e.g. trekking, cycling, boat trips).

In less than 30minutes drive you can reach the world-famous Saturnia hot thermal waterfalls and spa, open all year round, and in 20mins 3 of the best 18-hole golf courses in Italy.
