Two identical luxury cottages on top of a bluff in Fanore. Tucked in between the mountains and the sea. There are no other houses between the cottages and the ocean. The cottages are less than a mile from the famously scenic Fanore beach and a short stroll to town, where one can enjoy a pint of Guinness, music and a gourmet meal at the local pub. Or stop stop at the village shop for groceries, fishing gear or a chat with the friendly owners.
The cottages are within a short drive of world class golf in Lahinch. The traditional music hub of Doolin is also close by. Each cottage has been built to maintain the old world charm of a traditional Irish cottage while supplying the customized experience that today's discerning traveler requires. This includes free wifi, cable tv, barbecue grill, gas fireplace in the master bedroom and great room. Cots and high chairs are available. We have hosted honeymooners, golfers, writers, young families, birders, walkers, retired travelers and a host of other interests. Let us know what you are interested in and we can help customize your experience.
I rented this cottage for a month to finish a book I was working on. It has lovely views, is walking distance to the beach and there are great hill walks through the Burren right out your door. Mary, the owner, lives a short walk away, and was a great and thoughtful hostess. There's a typical pub a short walk away, but shop the farmers' market in Ballyvaughn or the supermarket in Ennistimon and cook up a storm in the beautiful new kitchen. There is another cottage next door and a few others on the road, but this a quiet spot, with more cows and horses around than people. The place is brand new, and tastefully appointed. Of course, the weather in this part of Ireland involves a lot of rain, so be prepared for that.
These two side-by-side cottages are situated in an absolutely beautiful spot overlooking the ocean! We were in #1, which is roomy, modern, and well equipped with appliances. The set of windows in the dining area, living room, and master bedroom all look straight over a peaceful pasture to the sea. On several of our days, we had a view of the Aran Islsnds, and even of the mountains of distant Connemara.
From the cottage, there are simple walks with stunning scenery on the Caher Valley Loop Walk. One direction is Fanore Beach and the ocean, a second is into The Burren, and a third is up the hill for stunning views - all three without ever moving the car!
You can also walk in minutes to a small market for essentials, a nice café, and O'Donohue's Pub. When you do drive, it's 20-25 minutes to Doolin, for the Aran ferries, or for traditional Irish music sessions, and it's 30-35 minutes to the Cliffs of Moher.
All in all, it's a roomy modern cottage, with spectacular views, and ideally situated for enjoying County Clare!!
David's cottage was a dream rental -- beautifully situated, impeccably maintained, close enough to everything but on a quiet road with little traffic. Amazing sunsets, lovely pastoral views of fields with rocks and rainbow-colored cows (one of my favorite things -- in the US, all cows in a herd tend to be the same color ... boring). Spent a week at the cottage inFanore during my birthday tour of County Clare (my namesake) and highly recommend this location as a jumping off point for day trips. If you visit, be sure to visit O'Donoghue's pub for some of the tastiest fish & chips ever. Cottage has a huge, private master BR with a sitting area, and a loft area upstairs perfect for kids.
We returned to this magical cottage on the sea 7 years later to find that absolutely nothing had changed in the cottage or county--we were so delighted! I believe our family was one of the first to stay in this brand new cottage then, and the home has been exceptionally maintained. Our family of 5 was so comfortable in this cottage and very happy to again escape south Florida's hot summer. Our 6 month old daughter is now 7 1/2, and we now have 5 and 3 year old daughters, too. The ocean and mountain views and sunsets are like none we have ever experienced--brilliant blue ocean, black rocky coast, sandy Fanore beach with surf school, beautiful rainbows, Burren rocky hills, sultry orange/red/purple sunsets (even more magnificent than Key West's.) The cottage is just above the main road which hardly has any traffic, really. For the first time we were able to show the girls the Milky Way. We had a family of 3 cows and 2 calves across the street, had lots of sheep in the town, ponies and horses. We took plenty of walks down to the pub, grocery store, and restaurant, and hikes up the hills in the cool weather. We visited the Cliffs of Moher Children's Farm (15minute drive), visited a sheep farm in Mayo County (Killary Sheep Farm in the Connemara Mountinains), visited plenty of castles, old cemeteries and church ruins. We were never bored in our 2 week stay. We were happy to find RTE Lyric classical Irish music/classical station still playing. Mary, Gus, and David, thank you so much for sharing your wonderful home with us. We will be back sooner this time!
My husband and I read all these wonderful reviews of the Fanore cottage prior to our trip, and even so, the home exceeded all our expectations!! The view was just stunning, and it was so amazing to wake up to the sound of the waves on the rocks below. We were absolutely enchanted. Mary and Gus, the owners of the property, happened to be in the country and staying in their home next door. They were fabulous hosts - so very kind and generous - it was a delight to meet them. Staying in this lovely home made our first trip to Ireland all that more special and memorable. We hope to be back!
The retired Alex Ferguson (Manchester United) is credited with the phrase "Form is Temporary, Class is Permanent", an analogy which sums up Deirdre's cottage, Fanore, West Clare & the Burren.
Having stocked up my annual leave days & almost year after our first trip to Fanore, the family & I returned again to West Clare for a 3 week stay. Travelling down from Dublin on the hottest day of the year, we were glad to arrive to a welcome sea breeze & find Deirdre's cottage as well kept as we had experienced the summer before.
Little had changed in this unspoiled remote part of Ireland in the preceding 12 months. The cottage was immaculate (kept in all its finery by Mary, who doubles up as a walking guide for all the best highways & byways in the Burren), Black Head & Slieve Elva shimmering in the afternoon sun, the golden sand of Fanore beach, the Aran Islands in full view, the 12 pins of Connemara overlooking Carraroe on the other side of Galway Bay & of course, the blue wall of O'Donohoe's pub beckoning you to its door. Ah yes, it was good to be back in Fanore.
The next 3 weeks were perfect. The weather co-operated with not too many rain showers & when the rain came, it passed just as quick. The beach became our daily destination with bucket, spade and now the kids are getting older, body boards to catch the perfect wave. Heaven!
This year, we explored lots more of the Burren & its walking treks. I attempted the 5-6 hour Black Head Loop Walk, but retired after 4 hours, calling HQ for a ride home from the majestic Caha Valley river road. There's always next year! Our 8 year old walked the hill road to Balliny & back 4 times in a week - on one occasion I went a little further continuing on over the green road towards Doolin & came down a steep windy road coming back to the Coast Road at Crumlin lodge. Fantastic views all the way. With stamina built up, our 8 year old took on the BallyVaughan Wood Loop, while our 4 year old took on the buggy friendly Carran loop in the heart of the Burren!
Having done Doolin Cave last year, we took in Ailwee Cave & birds of prey show. A great way to spend a day & a great credit to Clare Tourism.
No trip to Fanore is complete without a session or 2 (or 3!) in O'Donohoe's during GAA season. With Clare going head to head with neighbours, Galway, the atmosphere was electric & the craic 90! Thanks to Pat & Tricia, the proprietors, who Welcome ALL from near & far.
A gr8 property to rent & as Arnie says "I'll be back!"
