About Viveca

Hello, we're Hans and Viveca, a Dutch-American-German-Argentine couple living in Madrid since 1990. We are both contemporary art dealers.

Viveca purchased this house in 2008

Why Viveca chose Villanueva de la Vera

We fell in love with the Sierra de Gredos soon after arriving in Spain, when we would come out on weekends to go hiking. The dramatic rocky mountain peaks covered with snow until the summer, set against the palm trees and orange trees and other lush subtropical vegetation further down, and then the endless view of the Extremadura plains. Such a sense of space and of freedom! As soon as we could we bought a plot of land here, at easy walking distance from one of the Garganta Minchones, one of the area's best mountain rivers, and built the house of my dreams here. We hope you will be able to enjoy it as much as we do.

What makes this house unique

We built the house on a spot that has 360º views, of the high mountain peaks on the north, the endless Extremadura plains on the south with the Sierra de Guadalupe and the Montes de Toledo on the horizon at 50 km. distance, and the sensual and lush hills of La Vera area all around. The architects, an American married to a Swedish woman who lived and worked in Madrid for some years, managed to preserve this sense of all-around views by putting in many large floor to ceiling windows that make the house almost transparent. The light is absolutely magical, different at all times of the day, and the place radiates an incredible sense of peace and calm. The covered terrace is our actual living space, as the climate allows for all-year-round outdoor life. What we enjoy most are the summer nights out under the amazing starry skies, and the beautiful rockpools in the Garganta Minchones, where bathing in the mineral water pools to the sound of the waterfalls feels like being in an open-air spa.

Incredible setting in real wild Spain

  • 5 of 5

Lovely property right in the midst of nature with stunning views. Great pool, good walks directly from house either up the hills or down to the river. Really helpful hosts who went out of their way to ensure everything was just right. Loads of birds from garden- Nightingales, Hoopoe, Cuckoos, etc. Drive from local village is 4K on a unmade track - fine for an ordinary car, just need to go slow (takes 10mins). Local villages are full of character - real, old Spain. Thoroughly recommended for nature lovers, explorers & as a get away from it all destination.

The holiday house of a lifetime!

  • 5 of 5

When we were driving up in the car we were all so excited but we weren't expecting what we did get. The house was spectacular with all the rooms very well done. It had everything you needed and more for your comfort. The house had floor to ceiling windows which allowed you to see the view all the time (even when you were washing up). There is a lovely combined kitchen and living room (which is the main room) allowing you to have lots of room. All the beds are double beds and really comfortable. The outside was even better there was the glistening pool and the beautiful views. We all enjoyed sitting beside the pool in the sun reading our books with the lovely view right in front of our eyes. The pool was perfect for cooling yourself down, playing games and proper swimming. It was always clean with a very helpful man coming every other day to clean it. The view you had was the Sierra de Gredos mountains. There was also the table tennis table which every one of us enjoyed playing. The heat was lovely and warm and it was perfect to sunbathe in and get a good tan. We were there for twenty one days and it shone every day.

There was a little village near the house where you had everything you needed: several bakeries, patisserie, super market , sweet shop, pharmacy and lots of lovely cafes and restaurant. In the villages every body was so cheerful and they were also so happy to help you. Nearby were also some rock pools which we enjoyed having a swim in and then eating pepas on the rocks, you could go and listen to the water rushing and watch fish swim by.

I would highly recommend this house for people to stay in as you would have an amazing time and great fun. Hans and Viveca are so helpful and friendly and welcomed us so warmly into their home. So anybody who is looking at renting out this house should not hesitate!

Peaceful retreat in Extremadura

  • 5 of 5

My family of four (two boys, ages six and nine) just spent two very relaxing weeks here. The house is very comfortable and fully equipped. The pool is beautiful and the perfect antidote to summer heat. The views over the valley are just spectacular, it is quiet, the perfect place to unplug and recharge. Highly recommended.

Spectacular views

  • 3 of 5

The property is wonderful with its Panaromic views and is situated in a lovely part of unspoilt Spain, great villages, restaurants and friendly community feel. Unfortunately I don't remember reading about the long trek up to the property on a very bad unmade road..not too suitable for a normal car or the fact that due to it being solar powered you could not have a fan or air conditioning.

Incredible view and location

  • 4 of 5

Our stay was marvelous. The house presents incredible views on the landschape aroud and on the sierra De Gredos. There is alot of to do and to visit in this area of Spain. The owners are very friendly and welcoming.

I hope we will be able to return for future holidays.

The only negative point is the absence of a washing machine (as all the electricity is provided by solar panels).

Except this everything was marvelous

Fantastique!

  • 5 of 5

Casa La Vera de Gredos is situated some 100 m. above the picturesque village of Villanueva de la Vera, on the fertile southern slopes of the Sierra de Gredos. The region has a microclimate, with soft yet relatively wet winters and long, warm and dry summers. It is knows for its exuberant subtropical vegetation and the mountain streams that form idyllic natural rock pools. It is an ideal environment for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. The house has 3 mountain bikes, and there's a horse stable at a 5 minute walk from the house.

The area is also knows for the Ruta del Emperador, as emperor Charles V spent the last years of his life here, at the castle now converted into the Parador of Jarandilla de la Vera and at the Yuste monastery, which he had built. On the Extremadura plains, within an hour's drive from the house, are the beautiful conquistador towns of Trujillo and Cáceres. The impressive Roman ruins and Museum of Roman Art of Mérida are at a 2 hour drive from the house.
