About Sally Mais
Our Tuscan adventure has included a year living at Montate when our youngest daughter was born in the local hospital. We have enjoyed restoring the property and sharing it with others has been extremely rewarding. We have rented it out from the moment we bought it - our first guests experienced it without the pool and still loved it! Over the years we've had families, honeymooners, long term visitors and even a film crew enjoying the house.
Sally Mais purchased this Villa in 2001
Why Sally Mais chose Barga
We fell in love with the area whilst on holiday in Lucca in 2000 and set about looking for the right property. We decided to base our search around the wonderful hilltop town of Barga, which has so much to offer all year round. When we first saw Montate and marvelled at that incredible view, we knew there could be nowhere else that would match it for sheer beauty and tranquility.
What makes this Villa unique
The ever-changing, spectacular view is what our guests tend to rave about, as well as the privacy and seclusion. Some guests rarely move from the house, choosing to get supplies at the beginning of their stay and then not venturing far from the pool. Others choose a more active route and use the house as a base for local walks and day trips to the many varied and wonderful Tuscan towns nearby. The house has been decorated and furnished to a high standard and offers various places outdoors and indoors, to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
A contract which is required by law by the local authority will need to be signed on arrival which includes names and passport numbers of all guests.

Just what we needed and wanted this year. Total privacy and quiet in this lovely old farmhouse and pool. We enjoyed the 20 minute drive down to Barga which was also quiet! Serena who looks after Montate was first class and very helpful with her family. The views are fantastic and the wildlife superb. Thank you for a lovely holiday.
Thanks for your lovely review Nigel. We're so glad that Montate offered you a peaceful retreat for the holidays. We look forward to seeing you again in the future. Best, Sally
We had the best time at Sally's house. The week passed way too fast. We already miss the pool, the stunning view and the beautiful secluded house. We hope to come back!
Thanks so much Nadine. We loved having you and your family to stay. We hope to see you again in the future.
Fabulous house, stylish and comfortable
From the moment we arrived it was clear that a lot of thought had been given to making the most of this property. Rooms were well laid out, and comfortable, and the addition of a downstairs bathroom catered ideally for two families as well as providing an easy link to the outdoor space for ease of use when travelling up from the pool area.
The added feature of a games area and music room meant that we were all catered for. The varied seated areas outside added real comfort and choice, with respite from the sun without detracting from the best view that we have ever, ever had from a holiday property.
The kitchen is small but we had all that we needed within, and most of the cooking was done on the BBQ provided, and as such never caused an issue. Everyone just simply loved this place!
Perfect destination vacation in the real Italy.
Montate has it all, panoramic views, beautiful pool, scenic drives that will get your attention, proximity to fantastic day trips (cycling the ramparts in Lucca, atmospheric local villages, hot springs, spelunking.) Tasteful, spotless, comfortable accommodations. Excellent farm to table ingredients easily available. And THE best villa manager on the planet. Our only regret is that we couldn’t stay longer, but we’ll have to return when we have more time to visit the Cinque Terre. Did I mention the views? For al fresco dining—none better.
Thank you so much for the wonderful review. We’re so glad you had such a great time and we agree that Serena is the best villa manager on the planet!! We hope to see you again in the future. Best, Sally
Beautiful and stunning location in the Tuscan mountains.
A beautiful week at this property. The pool, amenities, house are all fantastic and it is the perfect base for day trips to Lucca, Pisa and the beach. Barga is a pretty little town with some lovely restaurants and cafes and the best ice cream store - Theobroma, just outside the old town entrance.
Just a stunning location
Yes the road up the mountain is a little hairy first time (and in the dark) but wow is it worth it. The views are incredible. House is very comfortable with lots of places to just hang out, read books, swim in the pool and just seriously relax. If you want to be out and about every day this maybe isn't the place for you because it is a 20 minute drive into Barga (a lovely place) and you have to concentrate hard. But if, like us, you mostly want to stay and relax then there's nowhere better. There is a nice walk down the hill into Barga which takes an hour.
We hired a 9 seater van and could just about get down the driveway - but back up was hairy and challenging. As long as you have something smaller you'll be fine.
Serena looked after us well. All in all a fabulous family holiday.
The local town of Barga has been voted as 'one of the most beautiful towns in Italy' and is frequently a 'must-see' in Tuscan guide books. This pretty, walled city has plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes and shops in addition to a renowned jazz and opera festival in the summer.
The walled city of Lucca is a 40 minute drive. Here both locals and tourists take to bikes to cycle round the walls of the city. Or go further afield for a day trip to Pisa or Florence.
The immediate area near the house offers spectacular views and mountain walks.
