Overview

About the property

Five bedroom, 5 bathrooms - 4 minutes to Enchanted Rock and 15 to Frederickburg

Originally built in 1900, this incredible home is made of white limestone quarried from the nearby hillside by German stone masons. Two lime kilns used to make lime for the mortar are found near the house. Just renovated, this property features new additions that create a lovely balance between its original characteristics and its modern upgrades. It is situated on 145 acres providing a hiking opportunity for guests.

“Das Enchanted Rock Haus” is situated on a grassy Crabapple valley with incredible views of the valley and nearby ranches.

The recent addition has cathedral ceilings featuring a living room with an entertainment area, limestone gas fireplace with a hand-finished mesquite mantel, and upstairs loft. This is the perfect space to gather with loved ones.

In the original home, you'll find a gourmet kitchen, formal dining room, living room, and 5 spacious bedrooms. You'll love the exposed limestone walls and 117 year old long leaf pine floors throughout.

Each bedroom features a king bed, making it easy for you to relax and unwind in your own private space. Get ready for bed in one of the 4 en-suite bathrooms as you draw yourself a warm bubble bath or take a steamy hot shower! On the first floor, a shared bathroom doubles as a powder room and provides a private walk-in shower for the 5th bedroom. 2 of the rooms have beautiful tile tubs and 3 have large walk-in showers.

In the evening watch from the 2nd story deck as 20-30 whitetail deer forage each evening and listen for the wild turkeys calling to each other. View two llamas and free range chickens that compete with the deer for corn. Wild turkeys and armadillos are often sighted as well.

Guests will spend much of their time around the house (about 1 acre) and will have access to the 135 acres behind the house. No access available from the first of November through middle of January. They can hike through the valley and follow the pasture road to the mountain top point for a beautiful view of the valley. It is opportunity to see deer, cattle, wild turkeys, armadillos, road runners, and even native lizards. A map and instructions are provided upon arrival.

Visit the town of Fredericksburg, just 12 miles away, and get to know the local culture through museums and historical sites. Each weekend there is some type of festival (car shows, crafts, and many others). In August, the Gillespie County Fair is held each summer and hosts a variety of events, including horse racing, bull riding, and much more! Known for its peaches, try a wide variety of peach infused foods, such as jams, ciders, ice cream, and more!

Take a chauffeured tour bus on US 290 to 17 award winning vineyards and wineries, before enjoying 44 wine tasting rooms throughout Fredericksburg, which is best known for their wineries and peaches.

About Mark Hughes

Koreen's family owns the 1000 acre ranch next door. Originally purchased by her mother and father in 1962 as a place to hunt and eventually retire.

We received this property in 2012 and rented it out for a couple years. When the renters moved out we decided to remodel the original house and add a more comfortable addition.

The original house served as ranch homestead from 1900 to about 1995.

Our intention is for the house to provide comfort, privacy, relaxation, and easy access to Enchanted Rock and Fredericksburg.

Mark Hughes purchased this chateau / country house in 2012

Why Mark Hughes chose Fredericksburg

We recognized the potential of the house and wanted to share it with others.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Uniquely situation with easy access to both Fredericksburg and Enchanted Rock State Park.

Guestbook comments from the manager

I stayed here with my three children - ages 7, 3, and 8 months. My kids loved it! They climbed the tree in the front and played outside for hours. I had stayed here to give my kids a chance to spend some time in the country, and this house hit the spot! I was thrilled with the yard - it has a fence that keeps them contained but is big enough to let them not feel retrained. My kids loved seeing all the animals - we saw three armadillos and 7 deer at once (yes, my three year old counted), a wild peacock and road runner. The layout of the house was amazing for kids too. The wall are solid so they weren't bothered during nap time by us talking in the dining room, but yet close enough that I could hear my baby cry without a monitor. The kitchen was well stocked, organized, and easy to use. My kids enjoyed the eating at the bar (great height for them). My older two kids love hiking up enchanted rock, so this was a convenient location for that. (My husband and I favor the wineries - especially the ones with patios like Grapecreek were we can bring the kids on weekdays).

We very much enjoyed our time and look forward to coming back!

The house that meets all your needs

  • 5 of 5

Could not have had a better place to stay. It was 1.5 from the ranch where we were hosting a wedding. Close and easy to go back and forth. The House meet everyone expectations. 5 bedrooms with your own self air or heat all bedrooms upstairs had their own bathrooms. plenty of room, nice views. The walls are 15 inches thick some maybe 18 inches, it almost felt sound proof and we had little ones yelling and playing. The front yard patio, upstairs patio and back yard. Deer and turkey were out each day. It rain one day so the large wash room was great it was great not having to take muddy cloths home. The kitchen was arranged so everyone can around. Large dinning room and bar seating in kitchen made thing very easy to get people fed and cleaned up easy. Everything felt very clean and brand new, even though the house was built in the 1900. I would defiantly stay there again. I loved that it had electric gate so you knew no one else would be coming in. All my family thinks I did a super job in arranging this place for everyone to stay. So brownie point for me!!! Thank Hughes for opening your home.

Perfect Texas Hill Country Getaway Spot!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a girl's getaway trip out to Fredricksburg and had an absolute blast. Both Mark and Pam were extremely accommodating and a pleasure to deal with. The house was very comfortable and well stocked. I have a feeling we will find our way out here again before too long.

  • 5 of 5

Property is beautiful and peaceful - far enough out of town but still close enough to venture in.

The house is perfect for 4 or 5 couples. We’ll definitely come back.

Owner's Response: Glad you liked it. It has been a real haven for the deer since they are fed in the evening. Sometimes we have had so many, they are difficult to count. The chickens and the deer share the feed. We have had turkeys armadillos, and a fox. Koreen

Delightful getaway

  • 5 of 5

This hill country home has been impeccably updated, blending the historic details of the original limestone house with all the modern conveniences. Our group of ten had plenty of space in this clean, comfortable home. Our kids of all ages enjoyed the llamas, chickens, deer and cattle that roam nearby, and the hike to the peak on the property was very rewarding with gorgeous views. We liked the proximity to Enchanted Rock and enjoyed the beautiful drive into Fredericksburg several times during our stay. The owner and property manager were very hospitable. Highly recommended!
